what is not unchanging makes the most sense. what changes is ambiguous and what doesnt is even more, but what is not unchanging is most sensible but hardest appreciate.
*pardon my ignorance, but is taoism marked by a hierarchical priestly structure or is it more loosely defined? if so what are they called? are the different strains of taoism akin to different denominations found in Christianity? again, if so what are they called? i know this may be unimportant when it comes to understanding the depths of the tao but iv'e always been curious about the basics of taoism like what are the 'gods' of this particular faith and why are there Buddhist equivalents? thanx
Guan Yu, the deified military leader, is described in legend as "unmoved by beautiful women".[17] This has been read as denoting asexuality by most commentators, rather than an homosexual subtext, but in folklore his relationships with his (not blood-related) brothers are assumed to have a homoerotic component
Tu Er Shen is a deity in Chinese folklore who manages the love and sex between homosexual men. His name literally means "rabbit deity". According to "The Tale of the Rabbit God" in the Zi Bu Yu,
The imperial inspector had Hu Tianbao sentenced to death by beating. Since his crime was one of love, underworld officials decided to right the injustice by delegating Hu Tianbao as the god and safeguarder of homosexual affections.[19] In order to cater to the needs of modern homosexuals, worship of the Rabbit God has been resuscitated in Taiwan: A temple was founded in Yonghe City by a gay, Taoist priest

Whether you try to reason your way through life or act through emotion, the words associated with each path can be traps, not bridges, because they hide what is common to each: the presence of mystery.
Don't think about it. In doing so, you will have discovered how to understand Tao. If you try too much then you will fail. If you don't try then you will succeed. Most importatly, do not be misled to think that the people in the video are Taoists. They are, merely, performing obvious rituals, therefore they have forgotten the Tao. You need to ignore the Tao if you really want to embrace it.
There are many streams and sects, you can research on the web and find a temple of one you feel more affinity with.I follow more than one stream! I also sympathize with the sister tibetan religion Bön and the Korean Sun Do,which is also taoism !
@shanglondeiti If you are serious about that I have a friend in the Liu Ren Sect that has developed a very complete correspondence course email me if you want me to get you in touch with him...
No my friend. the sai kong are more of a shamanesque sort of order. they are more or less similar to the various shamanic orders found throughout the world. their duty is to invoke the gods as well as bestow blessing upon mortals on their behalf. they also exorcise spirits & take on a role similar to the undertaker / funeral director in contemporary western society at taoist funerals/burials.
because i was born into a family of taoists. My paternal grandad was a sai kong; as is my uncles & their sons. throughout my entire life i have been exposed to such rituals. i know everything there is to know about it right down to the bottom.
that depends. taoism, being a polythestic religion, tends to hold a lot of accuracy if compared to the 3 main monothestic religions of the world; judaism, christianity & islam. in a sense it bears many a great resemblance to its indo counterpart hinduism. But like any other belief system, taoism too has its own flaws & lacks. so (in my own personal opinion) taoism is really no different that christianity & islam.
hi,i got this shot from Tao Bu Keong in Penang during the Kew Ong Yeah festival. I'm more Buddhist than Taoist.
I'm just wondering, are Sai Kongs different from 'Tang Ki'?
I think our ancestral religion is so wonderful, like the ancestral religion of other tribes because there is so much harmony and communication between us, the living & the other good spirits!
Well, the Tang Ki system of spirit/supernatural mediumship is generally more for the people of South Chinese descent, particularly the Hokkien ethnic group. As i am a Hakka (Lar Mor) my knowledge is somewhat limited but as far as i know, the Tang Ki has been practiced for at least 5,000 years & is still thriving in places such as Singapore & Taiwan; wherever there are sizeable Hokkien communities. Because the Tang Ki is almost exclusively practised by the Hokkien (cont'd)
(cont'd) they are, on the whole, two separate & unique entities from each other. only in certain (rather rare indeed) cases would the Hokkien Sai Kong take on the role of an exorcist. however for the other Chinese ethnic groups such as the Hakka & the Cantonese, the role of the Sai Kong & the Tang Ki is usually undertaken by the same person. only in rural parts of China can one find the same system of rituals/practices being used by ethnic groups other than the Hokkien.
that depends. the various taoist schools of thought have no clearly defined hierarchy & as such it matters very little to the sai kong if they are properly ordained or not. this is to say that they need not come from a highly-regarded school of thought but they MUST have the requirements to be a true sai kong such as knowledge of the chants, ritual moves, practices etc.
that is also quite true. but a person of a different lineage may also become that of another's lineage, provided that the individual is sufficiently able to handle the task.
is that a wooden fish?

Is a sai kong also an ordained dao shi?

if i'm not mistaken, each Sai kong may differ in their style, depending on the lineage they are innitiated into
