Awsome, and a true genius(Morricone)for sure. I can't help but keep comming back to this video. There's just something about this tune that gets to me...
Cue's, someone needs to run rehearsals and be the ultimate decider of all things musical. Cueing is especially important for ennio's music as well, since a good deal of the pieces are very minimalistic, but rhthmically complex (not so much this one..). But the biggest reason is that he wrote the music, and is one of the greatest composers of the this and the last century, not just an 'old man standing there waving a stick'.
Everytime i see a classical concert like this, im asking me, whats the reason for an old man standing there and waving a stick? I mean noboby is even watching him for a sec, they all staring on their notes... just a little curious ^^
Oh, and sometimes when the music slows down or speeds up, someone needs to be the one making that happen. This just happens to be a very steady piece with no real change in time. Seriously, it's not a stupid question, because it sometimes might appear that with so many good musicians, why can't everyone just play together? but most of the conductors work is done before a performance, and i's nice to have that glue that holds everything together, just in case.
At least a honest answer thank you. And i love ennio, do not think i underestimate his work or something. I was just wondering because it looked a little curious.
I was a very good question ... if you were not a player in an orchestra you would not know ... these players even though they are reading the music, they are well aware of his presence and actions .. he's guiding the ship ... I wish we all had the courage to ask when we don't know ...

To give you a more practical answer. Notice how this heavy "dum-dum-dum" that gives the rhythm sounds only when the stick is at its lowest, thus setting the pace of the piece.
This is one of the few things the conductor does, but for this piece this is all that was eventually needed. :-)
thanks Mister Moriccone (music)! thanks Henri Verneuil for the movie (french director), thanks Mr jean gabin , mr Alain Delon, Mr Lino Ventura! (great french actors) , merci
This is only an approximation of Morricone's evocative score for a French gangster film by Henri Verneuil (made about 1969-70) called "The Sicilian Clan" about a Mafia family. If anyone likes it, they will like much better the original soundtrack recording on the CAM label ~ highly recommended
Tengo 35 anios y me interese por Morricone por la pelicula Cinema Paradiso , la verdad que nunca pense que pudiera haber una musica tan hermosa. Este maestro es un genio , deben haber muy pocas personas en el mundo que puedan crear estas melodias.
Well, it's not a "kind of music" ~ it was written to 'illustrate' Henri Verneuil's Mafia thriller 'The Sicilian Clan' starring Alain Delon. The best thing about the movie is Morricone's music which is best heard in its original soundtrack form on a CAM CD. There is no "Gabriel" involved ~ he happened to be the name given by Robert Bolt to a Jesuit priest in his story "The Mission", so Ennio was saddled with that name. All clear?
to whoever posted the comment below me, it's not about him waving his wand around, he WROTE this music. he wrote a LOT of music to a LOT of movies that you've probably seen and enjoyed. i had the opportunity to sing in a choir with him and he's a brilliant man. think twice before being an idiot and making a comment like that.
He wrote this music??? Well that changes things now doesnt it.. well.. at least he could join in the band and play something... The musicans are not even following him... they are too busy reading the sheet music... Ennio should appear at the end of the performance and say "i wrote this" instead of waving that distracting harry potter wand.
The musicians ARE following him, yes, even as they read the sheet music. It's called peripheral vision, maybe you've heard of it. That is, in fact, the very reason for the conductor's baton -- it makes it easier to see his movements without looking directly at him.
ahhhhh i see now... wow... he is a genius.... sorry to offend before.... All respect to Ennio. This is amazing this piece.. After listening to it after a spliff, i gave is a 5 star, AWESOME...
So Ennio Morricone just waves that wand around.... why is everyone praising him when hes not playing no instruments except piss fart around with the wand. If you appluade this performance (which i did) think about the musicans.... not this wand waving person.
DC180, you ignorant slut. I'd love to see you conduct an entire orchestra. Let alone WIN A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR COMPOSING OVER 450 SCORES FOR CLASSIC FILMS.
Two years ago they played "Once upon a Time in the West" with notp orchestra and John Miles - Mr.Music (Was My First Love) on the mondharmonika and it was super!!!
As to those who comment on Morricone's conducting ~ well this is what a COMPOSER looks like when he is conducting his own music. He has said he is not particularly interested in Conducting ~ "People who come for my gestures should stay outside". And there's the problem: all those "celebrity" conductor-clowns pulling faces and sweeping around making big money and reputations on the back of music not a note of which they have or could compose!
This is real music.
It's a shame that the radio only plays garbage, at least here in Canada.
