Here's what it says in our "Hands on Research" for this product on the Crutchfield Website. This info comes from the owner's manual:
HD Recording Mode:
AVCHD 16M (FH): movies are recorded with AVCHD 1920 x 1080/60i format with highest quality and gives you approximately 14 hours and 40 minutes of recording time
Well, the hdr-xr550v is a model we carry, and it's two years newer than the SR12 with some improvements, It has GPS as well as an improved image sensor, among other things.
I am not sure of the difference between the hdr-xr550v and the hdr-xr550ve, (Europe maybe?)
when editing, or viewing the footage in vegas 9 does it play smoothly for editing or does it freeze up the computer a bit? i ask because my H.264 flash camcorder sucks for editing...especially in full hd 1080 mode! any help with this...is hard drive camcorders better for editing? thanks
Finding editing software that can deal with AVCHD files (High Definition) is the key. HD video off a hard drive camera has always been hard for computers to deal with, but they are finally catching up. Do your homework though, and make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements for whatever video editing program you use.
The HDSR12 definitely did have Nightshot. As you may know, there's a new model now, called the HDR-XR520V, and it also has NightShot® mode for recording detailed videos in low-light settings.
For more info, you can call one of our Advisors at 800 555 9408.
High Definition Mini DV camcorders use the HDV format. Crutchfield carries one, the Canon VIXIA HV40 High-definition Mini DV camcorder. And It's less expensive that the camera in this review.
You'll have to deal with Mini DV tapes rather than store everything onto a hard drive, but that's the tradeoff you make when you want to edit without having to buy a super computer.
i downloaded some raw avchd footage and put it onto sony vegas, when i press play to veiw the files it just plays really really laggy, not enough to properly ee the files, but im willing to go through each individual frame to edit the videos lol. But if i decode to get a mini dv camcorder, how do u get the video footage from it to your computer?
You'll want to use a "Fire Wire" cable. They go by several names, such as "iEEE-1394" cables and Sony likes to call it "i-Link"
Of course you'll need to make sure you have, or get a computer that has that input (if you have a computer capable of editing HDV, you "probably" have a fire wire input.
Get a Fire Wire cable at Crutchfield along with your camcorder.
it sure can. In fact You Tube would like you to upload HD video. For more info from YT about uploading vids in HD, click on "Upload - Video File." There's info right at the top of the page about uploading HD video.
If you need help figuring out how, and you bought this camera from Crutchfield, call the Tech Support phone number on your invoice, we can help you.
Great review... I am new at this and was wondering what settings do you use on the camera and what export settings for the best HD video for you tube? Any help would be great! Sorry if its answered already... there are so many comments!
Thanks, we're glad you found the review helpful. The answer to your question may depend on your computer. If you can edit HD video on your computer (must be a really nice computer) then you should shoot and capture in HD.
If not, SD is fine. Go to the Google/YouTube help center portion of YouTube for more info.
There's an articled called "Learn More: Optimizing your video uploads"
the easiest way i can explain this is that the 1080i (intergalacing i think its called) has a picture wich is ''sliced'' into many thin strips, all working seperatly, so that if an object move from the middle of the screen, to the bottom, then the upper parts dossent need to change. when its 1080p the whole picture change
at Au$499.00 here in Australia. For that kinda price I'd expect at least a 3X
but guess what that's it one size only, no way of extending optical zoom greater than basically 20X optical? I need and want say 50X any ideas? on this unit.
The HDMI output is an HDMI micro, not the traditional HDMI cable head. When you go purchase one make sure it's has the smaller end on it so it connects to the camera properly.
if you want to make a movie, get a 1080p cam, not a 1080i like this one. if youre not going to get into hollywood, then this cam should be good enough for you;)
hi yeah i wanted a 1080p taught this cam would have that but i have a full hd tv that plays 1080p if thats good i really love the sr12 its have 120GB hard drive that great
wat cam would i have to buy to make a movie write back thank u
depends on how much money you want to use. canon xh-a1 is the best camera I have ever used... but Im not very much of a film-maker... anyway, sony hdr-sr12 should do you just fine I think:) 1080p is supposed to be better than 1080i, but when i use the xh-a1, I actually think 1080i is better... (xh-a1 can use both) but that might just be me:)
well im buying the sony sr12e 1080i im hoping it just be rite 4 me im into film making thanks 4 writing back im sure this cam will have 1080p i think theres not much of a diffrence between the 1080i plus 1080p
yeah... like I said... I prefer 1080i. 1080p is when the whole picture change, and 1080i is just selected parts of it... Im not very good to explain stuff... but anyway, I'm also buying this cam:) ordered it today, so I might get it in the mail in three days or something^^
omg!!!!! that is so freakin crazy wow it has 120 gb. wow and did you guys know that usually cameras record 30 frames per second and this one can take about 200 frames per second and this is an awesome video camera.

dude. 120 Gb is not 14 hours of full HD
it's maximum 1h30 at best.
but you are probably talking about the compressed HD that Sony offers.

1080P is definitely better than 1080i. It has double the lines of resolution and is the best picture available.

kruttsniffer 2 years ago
Hey, krutsniffer is right on the money.
1080i means you'll only see 540 lines at any given time, 1080p means you'll see all 1080 lines of resolution all the time.
Currently, the only source that can provide you with 1080p is a Blu-Ray player connected to a 1080p TV with an HDMI cable.
If you watch a movie on an HD channel (like HBO for example) in 1080i, and then watch the same movie on Blu-Ray in 1080p you will see a difference.
Hope that helps

Have one of these HDR SR12E
Problem is Sony only put out a 1.7X
tele conversion lens ( VCLHG1737C )
at Au$499.00 here in Australia. For that kinda price I'd expect at least a 3X

Good call TSO,
Those cables are available at Crutchfield.
The "Sony HDMI Mini Cable" is available in either a 1.5M or 3M length.
