I'm bothered that cod is blinding us from seeing actually amazing fps that raise the bar but didn't receive enough attention and they didn't support there mp anymore.
What we really need is a fast paced tactical fps multiplayer and a difficult campaign that has advanced ai that isn't retarded and charge toward you or stand there but actually react like a soldier would. what I basically want is a battlefield style multiplayer with a crysis and medal of honor style campaign.
I'm not sick of FPS's by any stretch of the imagination. I'm just waiting for something competitive, fair, balanced, and fun to come on to XBL. No game fits the bill IMO just yet. Here's hoping CounterStrike: Global Offensive will be as good as I expect! If it is, then happy days are a' comin'!
It's okay, that big publishers like EA and Activison and game developers, who work day and night on their games, want to sell them and earn money to make a living. It's (sometimes) okay, not to take big risks and focus on successful franchises, because the next flop may cost their jobs. But at some point they need to ask themselves, why they're making games in the first place.
it seems like this new breed of realistic FPS is some sort of recruitment tool for the US army... i agree with Megadeth89 on the return to the classic arcade!
No what the shooter genre needs is a "MAG" style multiplayer. i know some of you will argue mag sucked etc. but it was the concept of mag that got me thinking. i know current generation hardware for the consoles counldnt handle this, but im thinking next gen. but the pc's could handle it now. What about a massive shooter that spanned hundreds of miles of terrain with over 1000 people fighting to secure like 500 objectives.
I know music games and JRPGs suffered genre fatigue. However, I wonder what happened to maze games and shoot'em ups. I know 3D platforming games are rather uncommon in these dayssince developers probably think they can't overtop Super Mario galaxy.
how bout they make 'Modern WARterFight' get 'nerf' to sponsor it, set up door traps, have rain coats as body armour, call in one of those water dropping helicopters, obviously multicoloured water bombs as grenades, refill ammo at tap's located around the map ect
As long as game companies continue to make tons of money that rivial & surpass what the movie industry puts out, then Para-Military F.P.S games are not going anywhere, considering how popular their online multi-player content is.
Its all about the bottomline: profit, and not about gameplay innovation or creative new ideas/IPs. The latter will eventually occur in the game industry, but the head hunchos will milk the money train for all its worth, for now. They see no reason to change just yet.
Release Treyarch's next game then take a year or two out, then reboot the franchise. The problem was rarely quality (in spite of bugs and exploits), the problem is fatigue.
Ok first of all grate video dont bore me about my grammar and yes this might change if beside gamespot some other big houses of gaming might think about this like IGN PC gamer and mechinema. The video speaks the thruth nothing more or less then that.
One of the most important reasons for shorter and more scripted campaigns is the rise in popularity of multilplyaer. And I'm not saying that its bad since I myself enjoy it, but, it gives enough excuse to devs for cutting short the campaigns and though it may be good for the business and sales, it does not go down well with many people.
@metallicaband Call of Duty is a real game. Just because you don't like it or think it's as deep doesn't make it bad. Clearly you are wrong in your opinion since the Call of Duty franchise rakes in more money then you will ever see in your entire lifetime. I don't even like Call of Duty, but to say it is anything less then a cultural phenomenon is frankly moronic beyond comprehension.
I actually enjoyed CoD4 as a mulitplayer game, only blind people won't admit that the series has been milked to death with barely changing anything in the game, charging $60 every year for the same thing should be a crime.
Again, that's how it is with anything going mainstream, more money doesn't exactly mean something is good, look at the hit music these days, a complete joke.
I'm far from being tired of FPS games. I'm just getting started, give me more. I played too many single player games back in the day, sick of them now. And if you think it's so easy to come up with something original I want to see you do it then. Otherwise stop complaining about the same shit.
I feel like the fps genre is getting over-saturated as well and might end up like guitar hero did and just be canned because nobody wants to play them anymore. I'm not saying GH is bad, I'm just saying activision screwed themselves over by making too many of them
It's not entirely the developer's fault, think about the consumer's responsibility. There are plenty of varied and diverse games out there, but what do the masses consistently buy? Call of Duty. Call of Duty. And more Call of Duty. The more you buy into it, the more of the same is all you're going to get. Take some responsibility and don't just blame this over-saturation on someone else.
Bravo GAMESPOT, never thought i would say this but very well thought and done video, made very good points on the current issues the FPS genre is "having". I for one stopped playing FPS a long time ago.. last FPS i enjoyed was quake 3 arena. Everyone wants insta gratification now, games with a rather short learning curve wich doesnt really allows for the old player skill ceiling. Now is all about getting the right equipment composition and doing it all fast. oh well..
I don't mind the FPSs as long as the setting is something out of the ordinary.
Bioshock, Fallout 3 and Half-Life 2 are some of my favourite games. The military FPS never really appealed to me because of the predictable story of an evil russian doing evil stuff and the american heroes stopping him just in time, you know like 24.
The first MW had the nuclear blast as a high point, and the second one put the player in front of a massacre. Those were the out of the ordinary moments I wanted to see
I loved it when in MW3 it showed snippets of news broadcasts where it talked about the chemical attacks and DC rebuilding and the peace efforts. I would have also wanted to see what would have happened later on with the economics and politics of it all
A little boring I suppose but an interesting change
Also in BF3 when it talked about Paris and the Russians being blamed? What happened about that?
I mean it might not be for everyone but it is different!
what about a multiplayer military shooter where when you actually you die you can't come back to life. You would actually FEAR dying then.. Would love to see people running in open space then..
the fuck? since when has the campaign been criticized? i solely remember mw3 coming & evry1 complaining "durr durr multi's the same durr durr". honestly the campaigns r the reason i buy cod. they r fun & allow us 2 feel like we're in a movie. who the hell would rather play a game tht makes u feel like a complete piece of shit bcuz u've just slaughtered a whole family of innocents by dropping a bomb on a village full of enemies? nobody. nobody would get enjomyent out of tht...
bf3 was sick and its a step in the right direction but its still not up to the standards of what bf2 was during the time period and it is really pressured by cod like all other fps... damn you cod
its not very realistic, metal gear solid series touches on some of the darker corners of war.... >.>;
on the topic, i really REALLY dont care for most shooters now, and was disapointed with battlefield 3. last few shooters to be enjoyed by me were mag, ut3, killzone3. i did have fun in the campaign for the recent AvP but with the lack of servers the online suffered... rather never happened. (sega can bite the big one on that)
While I'm not getting tired of the genre, I am getting tired of the military shooter sub-genre. No they should overhaul the game because like everyone below and before me said, it's gotten to a point where everything is way too linear and familiar to be called original anymore. This is why I can't wait to play Syndicate and why I got Timesplitters a few days ago. It never takes itself seriously and just has fun with itself.
I feel the same way, the only shooter that doesn't feel stale is Team Fortress 2.
The COD series has become a joke. Yeah Cod4 was great when it came out, but they keep re-releasing the same game over and over with minor updates and a different name.
Oh sure they have a new 10 hour campaign every sequel but that should just be a DLC because everything else is pretty much the same.
@MeKaNiNjA8 Yeah, but Uncharted is not a Military shooter. It is a shooter with platforming, hand to hand combat, puzzle solving, and a great story. The total opposite from COD.
Games like CoD get amazing ratings for being the same thing every year, but games like Brink that try to do innovative things end up bombing in sales and ratings.... its bull shit.
The problem isn't the repetitiveness of these shooters, it's the insane focus on realism, even such titles halo, recently became more realistic, if I'm honest we need more Just cause 2 style, "here you are, you're a god but you can die, there's some story or something I don't know, either way, just go ahead and have fun."
@acmasta619 Thank god, I thought I was the only one who still remembers chillin in my friends basement playing virus tag on time splitters 3...you know they're making a fourth :)
I think infinity ward should get 2 years to make a new cod game. Mw2 was my favorite game and i hatet black ops then tehy made mw3 and i wanted to go back to black ops. i would never expect me to ever said that but i think infinity ward should get 2 years to make a new game listen to everyones problems i dont care if im gonna do 2 years without a new cod game as long as the new one is good thumbs up if u agree
@airsoft1266 Infinity ward did get two years, they released one a year because Treyarch did the other one, they used to alternate now, since Activision fired infinity ward, treyarch are going to have deal with a ton of pressure, eventually killing the genre, dancing on it's grave, and putting turrets up to make sure it doesn't come back from the dead to steal our fried bacon.
@airsoft1266 infinity ward do get two years for cod game ... black ops was made by tryarch ...and now sledgehammer games joined cod making team so it will be probably like 3 years per cod game ... hopefuly that will result in better campagin ( i dont care about multi ... its boring)
I'm bored of running behind cover like a scared baby all the time or massacring hundreds of faceless goons for the entirety of the game, bring back the old shooters which had more fast-paced yet balanced action with bigger enemy variety.
What I love is how how Genre Fatigue is spreading to Assassin's Creed. It's not even it's own genre, and yet it's getting old. Gaming is kinda going down the drain.
@KaeruthePaladin well i went from console to pc a few years back and it is far better, now im easily dominating online. you just need to practice or maybe your only used to playing against console kids.
O lawdy. Whats wrong with people. I fucking love the campaings and I play MW games only for the campaign. I replay them from time to time and remember them all. These people dare to call themselves gamers. haha, nope. Even if I fucking love these guys I hate the way how little they pay attention to games.
@ProjectiluvOP They're just talking about how many military shooters are out there and why they think there is too much of the same. It does get a little stale after a while. I mostly play multiplayer because it's more fun for me and usually I don't like to get myself all wrapped up in a campaign.
I don't consider people who only play shooters gamers, a gamer plays all types of games because they enjoy them not because they want to get achievement points or to get 5 stars on there gamer picture. They play shooters fps or tps, rpgs open world or turn based, shmups, tactics, and platformers, those are gamers, COD fan boys are as far from gamers as you can get.
We need more shooters like Deus Ex and Serious Sam, a deep interesting story and awesome characters/side missions/quests and like Serious Sam, just an all out all about fun kinda game. Games like CoD & BF want us to take it all too seriously. I'm tired of all the same old war multiplayer games.
I hate how people talk about the FPS genre as a whole is getting boring. It's not the entire FPS genre, it's specific SHITTY FPS GAMES THAT ARE THE FUCKING PROBLEM! I MEAN WHAT THE FUCK!? ALL THAT IS BEING RELEASED IN TERMS OF MILITARY SHOOTER ARE SHITTY COD AND SHITTY BF, WE NEED SOME FUCKING GAMES WHERE THE PLAYER HAS MORE FREEDOM AND HAS TO THINK HARDER. WHAT THE FUCK ARE THESE GAMESPOT ''experts'' SAYING ABOUT THE ENTIRE FPS GENRE!? I DON'T KNOW, SHIT IS COMING OUT OF THEIR FUCKIN MOUTHS!
@waterhot80 Agree, why don't they talk about Bioshock, or Borderlands, or Bulletstorm, hell even Fear, there not all 5 hour games about military shooters.
@Magedeth89 the stereotypical 13 year old online is actually a 6 year old btw.

Well, simple AI isn't a problem. What is a problem though, that it's a simple AI without being a classic-style shooter.
When it comes to lack of arena shooters, then fortunately a lot of of the arena-style shooters are mostly freeware in these days.

What we need now is some fast paced multiplayer FPS games with less emphasis on realism and all that.
Something similar to Quake, but with modern graphics and some interesting and unique weapons etc.
Players don't care so much for the realism and lifelike wars, as long as the game is fun to play and the multiplayer is balanced well.

@Duckman118 lol i am not a cod fan boy, but brink is such a bad game
and2dude 3 months ago 4
@and2dude Yeah it wasnt good. But it had really good ideas and atleast they try to innovate.
Duckman118 3 months ago
@and2dude That's why it was F2P last weekend. They're so desperate to market the game in its death throws. It's kinda sad.
TheGuyWithTheSniper 3 months ago
The problem isn't the repetitiveness of these shooters, it's the insane focus on realism, even such titles halo, recently became more realistic, if I'm honest we need more Just cause 2 style, "here you are, you're a god but you can die, there's some story or something I don't know, either way, just go ahead and have fun."
annoyingwolfthing 3 months ago
They should stop making COD games and move into something else...tired of seeing a COD game every year that's almost the same
(not being a hater because I occasionally play them)

I think infinity ward should get 2 years to make a new cod game. Mw2 was my favorite game and i hatet black ops then tehy made mw3 and i wanted to go back to black ops. i would never expect me to ever said that but i think infinity ward should get 2 years to make a new game listen to everyones problems i dont care if im gonna do 2 years without a new cod game as long as the new one is good thumbs up if u agree
airsoft1266 3 months ago
@airsoft1266 Infinity ward did get two years, they released one a year because Treyarch did the other one, they used to alternate now, since Activision fired infinity ward, treyarch are going to have deal with a ton of pressure, eventually killing the genre, dancing on it's grave, and putting turrets up to make sure it doesn't come back from the dead to steal our fried bacon.
annoyingwolfthing 3 months ago
@airsoft1266 infinity ward do get two years for cod game ... black ops was made by tryarch ...and now sledgehammer games joined cod making team so it will be probably like 3 years per cod game ... hopefuly that will result in better campagin ( i dont care about multi ... its boring)
nekrus2 3 months ago
@nekrus2 I think with Slegehammer joining in Activision might think about realising a COD every six months!!

Gaming is kinda going down the drain.

i like ww2 genre more
YesImInThisVid12 3 months ago
@YesImInThisVid12 That's still an FPS! Only set in a modern day... -.-

gotta love how one of the prime examples of FPS Genre fatigue was an advertisement for this video: Call of Battlefield 3

ohhh just remembered something. If you want war that feels like war, just fucking play Operation flashpoint. Geez, do these guys even play games?
ProjectiluvOP 3 months ago
players these days play only to kill, not to have fun.
just like those who play only for trophies or achievements.
I miss the ol'days...

They'r repetitive but somehow ppl (including me) still like them
GOD 3 months ago
Until the consoles actually get a good controller method i will continue to believe that we will not get any
fast past, accurate, split second, shooters
Right now most FPS games feel like "shooting fish in a barrel" really easy and dumbed down to an extreme level
I miss games such as SOF 1-2, Quake 1-3, Doom 1-2
New ideas such as Heretic and Hexen, hell even Deux ex 1 was great and innovative
If a developer could focus on the PC and with a great budget i am sure we could see gold again
Zargas 3 months ago
@Zargas sadly not gonna happen unless the majority of the console community migrate to the PC platform.
MyStuff774 3 months ago
@Zargas
Ah this old arguement, it's not that console controls are bad for shooters it's that you were probably brought up on PC shooters.
I can play a shooter on the PC for so many hours and still not get the hang of it lol, which sucks because my favorite shooter is a PC game.
KaeruthePaladin 3 months ago
@KaeruthePaladin well i went from console to pc a few years back and it is far better, now im easily dominating online. you just need to practice or maybe your only used to playing against console kids.

O lawdy. Whats wrong with people. I fucking love the campaings and I play MW games only for the campaign. I replay them from time to time and remember them all. These people dare to call themselves gamers. haha, nope. Even if I fucking love these guys I hate the way how little they pay attention to games.
ProjectiluvOP 3 months ago
@ProjectiluvOP They're just talking about how many military shooters are out there and why they think there is too much of the same. It does get a little stale after a while. I mostly play multiplayer because it's more fun for me and usually I don't like to get myself all wrapped up in a campaign.

marcosfan90 3 months ago

I'm tired of all the same old war multiplayer games.
eetfukouijaaa 3 months ago
how about the dont play them for abit?
jake10846 3 months ago
I DON'T KNOW, SHIT IS COMING OUT OF THEIR FUCKIN MOUTHS!
waterhot80 3 months ago
@waterhot80 Agree, why don't they talk about Bioshock, or Borderlands, or Bulletstorm, hell even Fear, there not all 5 hour games about military shooters.
