  • Damn you! You little prying pandora! You little demon! Is this what you wanted to see !

  • Chaney was the most frightening of ALL!

  • Thumbs up if you were as scared as fuck

  • Not scary in color--the lighting on the face is messed up. Much better in B&W. Of course, the real thrill is in the buildup and the suspense. You have to see the whole sequence.

Of course, the 1925 original does use two strip technicolor for the Bal Masque scene.

  • thats one scary image..!!

  • Brilliant. Just brilliant. Also, I love how the video just ends with her "Oh shit" face.

  • looks like a FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND cover come to life!

  • if only London After Midnight were here (a lost gem among horror icons) starring Lon Chaney (not Jr. Sr.)

  • Wonderful in color and in black an white. Still gives me the willies, though. And to think he did all the makeup himself? Amazing.

  • Takes on a whole new look...just a wonderful transformation

  • I wouldn't mind seeing a "colourised" version - in addition to the original.

  • Lon Chaney rest in peace! true dedicated actor!

  • Still quite terrifying...I LOVE THIS FILM

  • IT is ironic how this was once considered a very scary scene.now people laugh at it................

  • haha in color it`s not even scary! he almost looks like an everyday person...

  • @Lusnack uh....I wouldn't say every day....

  • @Lusnack where do you live where everyone looks like this? haha

  • @1991MRjesse XD

no I just meant by that that I can figure out a much more horrible face, with all the tecniques they have nowadays. In comparison to THAT he looks almost normal.

But really, in color he`s not frightning at all, ok something is wrong with his nose but the other parts of his face are pretty normal, right?

    MMP

    Lusnack

p.s:you would really like to know, wouldn`t you?

  • @Lusnack ok, i get ya.

no...i'm not a stalker. although i am in possession of of a recently deceased nigerian princes bank account details. if you would like me to share the sum of US$20 million with you, send us your details at...........

  • @Lusnack they don't have any technique nowadays, that's what makes it so awesome....the man did his own makeup in all his films....now they just use a team of nerds on computers and blow the budget WAY out of proportion.

  • I don't know anything about the phantom. The phantom is boring.

  • @spinetinglydingly How can you tell it's boring when you don't know anything about it?

  • In color! that's amazing!

  • the face he makes is hilarious XD hes like -le gasp-

  • @ShadowDwellerXXX Your comment is full of so much win.

  • The music makes it creepier than the original version.

  • NICE! That's just weird looking at it that way.

  • Was the organ music in the 1929 release then?

  • I know she's sorry she did THAT!

  • coool! I'm watching the whole 1925 movie little by little now but it's great watching it in color!

  • LOL pause at 0:03 !!!!!!!!!!

  • @iamtop5 Why LOL??

  • haha scariiee :D

If anyone wants to watch the whole film, its been posted on here by:

    LerouxsPhantom

As have all the phantom of the opera movies!

I highly recommend the ones made in 1943 and 1962 :D

  • why does she just stand there?? lmaooooo

  • @spinjoh Notice he's faced away from her for a significant period of time. We, the audience, see his face, but she doesn't until he turns around. The whole scene has her screaming and running away at that point, but that isn't shown here.

  • Jajajajajajaja... lol... it makes me feel happy....

    :-D

  • Chaney says no color.

  • Colorizing classic films always seems wrong to me, kinda like putting something in a beer to enhance the flavor. You may get a different perspective, but there's nothing like the original. Black and white IS more scary to me. Gives everything a dark, dreamy quality, but I can respect the opposing view.

  • whoa guess fans wont be seeing this in bluray since its only avalibe in black & white only

  • this is some really good colorization. It's actually pretty creepy.

  • Cool!

  • I personally love this version, but i do prefer the 2004 version , it is just an opinion.

  • horaay!

  • kinda cool, brings some modernity to history. this was filmed nearly a century ago.

  • This was shot in b & w and lighted for b & w. It was NOT lighted for color and should NEVER have been colorized. Colorization goes against the true spirit of the original films!

  • For some reason the face he makes really makes me hear Goofy's "Gwaaarsh!" in my head.

  • :O :DDDD

  • the only version of phantom of the opera i liked

  • 1929

  • lol his face

  • @invaderpink

    i know right xD

  • I've always been an organ music enthusiast... Does anybody know what this organ song is?

  • haha he's an OG!!

  • well, not too bad condition. Have you checked out the ultimate edition? Probably the best place to find it. Oh, and I would LOVE to see the origional psycho shower scene in color!!!!!

  • @simolionshane If you did, it would give away a secret. The fake "blood" in the shower scene is actually purple.

  • @machine8806 no, it is chocolate syrup.

  • this is the 1929 not 1925

  • @simolionshane

True, this is the version of the unmasking from the 1929 release, but it was made in 1925. The only available copies of the original '25 version are in pretty rough shape so not as easy to work with for coloring.

  • @kgammill Yes, it is an outtake from the 1925 production, but it was first seen in 1929. It virtually identical.

  • @kgammill can you colorize more of the movie plz! I'd like you to and maybe i could add sound!

  • @Treyskywalker77 There's Already A Sound Version Available on DVD! The Milestone Ultimate Edition Featuring The 1929 Version with and without talking, and the 1925 silent version! I hav it and it is AWESOME!!!

  • @simolionshane whole movie please... LON FTW!

  • I always thought he'd be Greenish ???

  • how did they do that?

  • now why didnt erik look this fucking brutal in the musical movie? everyone just wants to see butler looking pretty... meh...

  • @Runningtail Cos anything that Andrew LLoyd Webber get asscoiated with is shit.

He's a complete wanker and should have left this Great Story alone

  • @psychodamned

Hey now, don't point fingers. As much as I am angry at Lloyd Webber for creating the atrocity 'Love Never Dies', we must credit him for making Phantom of the Opera a worldwide phenomenon. Without his stage production, many would not have become fans or know what a beautiful story it is. Including me. The musical was what ignited my love of musical theater. It grew into an interest in the story, and then the silent movie. So lets not generalize all his works as garbage, please?

  • @paintedchinadoll you are right! he made this movie a world wide phenomenon but destroying the original, the only comparison we can make about this horrendous sin is what twilight did to dracula and the werewolf it makes them a phenomenon but pissing in the original material.........i hope they remake this old classics but making them better and at the same time staying true to the original material.....i'm glad the you like old classic movies man .

  • @kratos3821

Ugh, Twilight. Vampires were dark and sensual before Stephenie Meyer trampled on it. But I digress; I cannot fathom what Webber has done! To be fair, I can credit LND with a talented cast (I love Sierra and Ramin), but the story? Phantom conveyed that if you love someone, you will let them go. LND makes Phantom look like he is merely obsessed and did not learn. That isn't true love. Blast LND to shame..I will stand by the original with all my heart. We need not this stingy sequel.

  • @psychodamned i'm agreed with you man!, lloyd fucked up the original phantom, he did the same as that stupid woman that fucked up dracula and the werewolf with his stupids romantics books...................vampires that glitter?... fuck the twilight

  • he's not really that ugly. A bit creepy but not run-from-the-room-screaming hideous.

  • amazing actors!

  • Amazing actress.

  • I bet the whole cinema audience screamed at this scene.

  • @Dristarg It's said that some even passed out.

  • omg, make up's really good for the time...

  • @SuperHelozinha yeah its awsome he did his own make up i heard and was at it all day but they had to tone the make up down a lot over the years they said that pepole in the movie thearter fainted when they seen his face it was so scary so they toned it right down

  • @SuperHelozinha lon chaney actually did his own make up which is amazing!

  • Another fine job, though perhaps the Phantom should be more pale, almost vampirically whitish? He has been away from the sun for many long years, plus the more ghastly his appearance, the more effective he is as a horror icon, I think.

  • Wow! Beautiful!

  • This is my very first comment on youtube ever! this is my favorite scene in the story!

  • actually a portion of this movie was filmed in early technicolor and released to theaters in that fashion, but I don't remembet which part (I saw it at the Tampa Theatre several years ago).

  • It's the Masked Ball sequence. In some versions different scenes are tinted and sometimes his red robe is colored when he is on top of the tower.

  • Two sequences were in color, originally: The Masked Ball sequence, and the Faust Ballet sequence at the beginning, which is now lost (the color, that is).

  • Wow Nicely done. Thanks for posting this clip

  • That looks amazing! They should do a colour version of this movie IMO.

  • Not to bad!

  • The black and white makes it look scarier, but this is still really good!

  • Why does black and white make it look scarier????

that's ridiculous...we don't live in black and white...black and white makes me think it is only a movie and not real...this is how it would look in the real world...much scarier....you are just used to seeing it in b&w. I recently saw colorized versions of the three stooges and the little rascals and it was like watching it for the first time....

  • @ZAPDUNGAA one when they first made movie it was in black & white cause it was easier plus you have to remember back then they made lot movies to get AWAY from reality

  • Better in Black and White!

  • How did you do that?

  • Wonderful clip - If Chaney's headpiece didn't keep flipping up due to the heat from the Technicolor lights or Prizma lights maybe the pubic would have seen the original take in color -But this is just as good as you can get.

  • Amazing

  • Awesome coloration!

  • Oooh, I love it! Nice work!

  • Many Halloween showings of this film across the world this year! Follow @fantomedelopera on Twitter for all the latest updates on special screenings and other PHANTOM OF THE OPERA related news.

  • I saw the 1929 remastered version and the original, but didn't they use color for that too? I mean it was only in small amounts and often it gave the movie a more greenish look to it, but for the masquerade ball it looked great. But in any case yeah that's an amazing job you've done there sir. REALLY great.

  • If more of these old horror films were done over in Technicolor and given new, updated music, it would draw a lot more people in, instead of blood, gore and torture that are almost requirments for scary movies these days. The original should be preserved of course, but the fact is many people today are turned off by silent films or those in black and white.

  • amazing ! the colors are beautiful

  • That's fricking amazing! I love the black and white in the original dearly, but it'd be really interesting to see the whole thing in color!

  • lol if somebody would had a fart to the scene xD

  • Very natural. Doesn't look fake at all! Good job by somebody.

  • That was so cool seeing it in color!

But it really gets on my nerves that no version of Phantom has ever done the book justice. Even Chaney, who is considered to be the most famous Erik, doesn't look at all like the book's character.

And why is Daroga always cut out?

  • I dont think that he looks ugly, he just look funny XD

  • HAHA! LOL! Look at his face in the 0:04 when he finds out that the mask is gone XD

  • AMAZING! i wodnt hav pictured it any other way!

  • Wow! That was soo cool to see Mary Philbin and Lon Chaney in color and moving!!! :0

  • Give it up for The Phantom in color!!!

  • That is awesome! Thanks :)

  • Wow!!! That was awesome! I'd like to see what the whole movie would've been like, like that.

  • Excellent job, Kerry! A friend of mine told me he saw it as a kid and Chaney was green. He was terrified he said.

  • As always - nice work! Fits beautifully, color choices are

perfect. In the interview we filmed with Carla Laemmle,

she told us she was on the set when this scene was

being filmed, described what it was like, and how Mary

Philbin first reacted to Lon's makeup! What a historic

event to witness! - 5 stars! - best wishes - Cortlandt

  • Nice work. Was this done with After Effects?

  • Very impressive work

  • I have the gif image of this that you were kind enough to allow me to include in one of my MySpace photo albums. There and here, your work is remarkable.

  • I've never seen this in color, pretty cool. Is there an entire 1925 film version in color, or just this scene?

  • this guy colorized this unmasking scene. the only scene that still exists, and that was shot in 2 tone technicolor are the Bal Masque scenes.

  • no...this is probably a DVD rip of the Milestone Ultimate Edition DVD. That said...hey kgammill, could you post the rest of the colorized film?

  • i have the Milestone Ultimate Edition.. there is NO colorized version in this version, either. only the tinted sequences (amber, blue, green) , as well as the 2 strip technicolor bal masque and the hand tinted rooftop sequence, with the Phantom's cape tinted red, as it blows in the wind, when up on the statue of Apollo. again, NO colorized version exists.

  • Then what is this? Did you colorize it yourself? If you did, awesome job! Can you colorize the full sequence and post it?

  • I didnt colorize this scene, the original guy who posted it, did, i am guessing. i agree, its a good job. maybe you can write to him and ask about colorizing more of the sequence.

  • who is he? like, whats his username?

  • not sure.. and the thing is.. to colorize is VERY time consuming .i would bet it took quite a while for him to do the unmasking scene, as each frame needs to be colorized. to do a whole film, even for professionals would be VERY labor intensive. you also have to have fast computers with enough power to handle the software, do the tasks, etc.
