I didn't play the Master System version of Outrun until 2011, so I am not nostalgic for it. But the fact I was able to enjoy it as much as I did is a testament to the extremely high quality of the original 1986 music, graphics and gameplay. Yu Suzuki can rest peacefully knowing he made such a amazing game.
One of my worst choice in my life when I bought the nintendo!!! Gosh!! I loved so much outrun, space harrier , hang on, after burner and my fucking cousin and the saleswoman influenced me to buy the fucking nes!!! I wanted sega so badly!!! this game looked so good when you see other 8 bit conversion: I used to have an amstrad!!
I remember back then I bought the Master System for OutRun. Was very disappointed and thought: "Is that all? Can't this machine do better?" The SMS can. Look at games like R-Type, Zillion, California Games, (which was as a game better than the Mega Drive version), Sonic the Hedgehog, they even made a passable Road Rash adaption.
Excellent playthrough. OutRun is my favorite racing game series, and this SMS port didn't disappoint. In fact, the SMS version of Magical Sound Shower, my favorite song from the game, brings a tear to my eye.
to bad i never had a SMS at that time. i had the commodore 64, also a superb games computer at that time, but this outrun is just so much better than the commodore version :-D thanks for showing.
I never knew about this game until recently, but this does bring back memories of playing Rad Racer on my older brother's NES. Man, my generation's games suck compared to you older guys' stuff.
In 1986 when OutRun hit the arcades the NES and SMS were the leading consoles. Unfortunately, the result seen here were about the best to be expected on the arcade to home conversion front. The arcade perfect port of OutRun is definitely the Saturn version, which I believe was released sometime in the mid 1996, some 10 years after the orignal arcade version! Yeah, technology was much slower to catch up back in those days.
well there still is the lack of money for things like that :p. you can start an entire gensis collection for a aes with 5 top notch games.AES is awesome is still have one and maybe ill buy a game for it once but not mopre then 2 games max on that system,it so damn expensive.
The processing power for the Out Run hardware was incredible powerful! It had two 68000 Motorolas running at 12 Mhz and mulitple independent graphics and music processors (Zilog Z-80).
Even thou it was technically a 16 bit system, it rivaled many 32 bit systems years later. Yes, it was that poweful.
If Sega where to come out with system similar to the arcades, at the time, it would of at least cost 2,000.00 as a home system (during that era).
they should release a OutRun compilation with all the sprite scaling outrun games in it:
OutRun, Turbo OutRun, and OutRunners ! i don't care if it would come on dvdrom or as a download for every console, just as long as we get it. i don't want emulator versions, as i am willing to pay for it.
yeah, i remember bringing home this superb game on the megadrive. to bad i never owned a master system, but playing the megadrive version made up for it :-D
this is amongst some othrs like the dawn of what we shouldnt have today if there wasnt for guys like me,yelled at,youre crazy, get away from that and be normal etc... actually i got this soundtrack as a modern mix that really are as good as any "real" technosong if u lkie it.. da-da-da,,dan-nanna-naaa :)
A classic Hang onthing we used to laugh at - " you lost your muffler" as muff is a ..gah whats the word..not official expression for pussy ;)
@MegaFan1994 For a Power Base Converter, your best bet is probably eBay or Console Passion (a retro console/computer store/company - based in the UK). :)
Honestly, at the time this was released it was the finest home racer there was. I think the hills and rises were probably a little ambitious, but I was impressed they were there. I've never really played Rad Racer, so I can't say which was better, but OutRun for the SMS was pretty good. Better than Hang On at least!
I was really surprised just how good the sms version was.Even though it was only 8 bit,it was miles better than the 16 bit computer versions.I had the amiga one and it was total garbage.
Yeah, that happens on my phone's emulator on games like this. It's simply not fast enough to cope with the speed of scrolling the game is demanding and drops some frames. Similarly, YouTube videos aren't high enough quality for the speed of scrolling. Sadly, it kills the sense of speed.
I had SMS and this very game - I actually still have them around at home, and they still work, if I rememeber correctly! I played this over and over again through and got pretty darn good in it (there wasn't too much else to do back then..)
My best friend and I were amused by the green Volkswagen Beetle going 290 km/h in the game :-D

Outrun on the SMS was a great port (hands down), I even like it better than the genesis version. brings up to many memories.

A very solid port of this game considering the hardware it's running on and what it's trying to replicate.

They really should have been able to get better
graph's and sound out of the MEGA-version but
they are almost the same and in some way I think this version has got sharper graph's
