Sometimes I ask the question: would owning a buchla simply mean you have a higher house-insurance bill? Or does it provide more avenues for even an average musician?
My guess would be the former, and that the high cost of entry is overcome by some purely because they made the necessary sacrifices for their art.
is there a actuall song for this? i constantly sit and listen to just this vid i like it so much. one hell of a inspiring piece of sound that just gets me feeling amazing
You know what this reminds me of.. I don't know if anyone would relate but in Phantasy Star 4 on the genesis, it had songs with this kind of synthesis (in the machine centers).. awesome
I'm loving this... but why is it playing with the nerves in my headache, why?? I don't want to be rude, I'm realllly into this but, why oh why is it inducing a small migrane??? It's not that loud...
What is that thing? Where is the sound coming from? How is he creating those different sounds/effects? Is this where dance/techno music comes from? I must know!
That is the Buchla 200e modular synthesizer. There is a sequencer that is triggering the rhythmic pattern. The keyboard is a group of touch plates that will trigger oscillators and other modules to create sounds. The different sections of the plates can be assigned to react to pressure as well as touch. Check out the Buchla website. It gives a breakdown of the different modules that make up the synth - as well as the prices (which are astronomical!)
Thunder has to be my favourite controller, by far.
It's great to come back to this video now that I'm more familiar with the genre and with the Buchla itself (through what I've heard of course, I don't think I'll EVER touch one). 3:01 is when the composition really comes into its own; so layered, so intense.
This is so catchy.. It's been stuck in my head for days and I still love it. Great stuff.. Sad day when you left NIN. I'm really glad I got to see you in September. Great show. Keep up the stuff with Modwheelmood.

Wow, that was great! I always look forward to your Buchla 200e videos. They are very musical and artistic. I may be getting a 200e soon, and your videos show me exactly the kind of stuff I knew could come from that machine. Thanks, and please keep posting gems like this!
As a fellow synth-slave, you're music always impresses me. I had a chance to meet you at the NIN lights in the sky dress rehearsal at the Forum in the bar after the show but didn't say hi. Damn me.
