I've actually worked down there a few years ago doing some data collection, counting passengers boarding and exiting the train. It was quite fun actually because we had to get a a sense of how the switch points were thrown to anticipate which track the next train was coming in on before passengers made it to the train.
I've spent a fair amount of time there. Any particular reason why you ask?
@marylindsayrr - The uneven way the other trains were lined up... the appearance of the long thin platforms themselves, how the tracks were lined up, and the way the NJT train slowly crawls in without changing speed before slowly coming to a halt.
There was no way you could have built this without being in the real station.
I have had a great deal of experience down there and have ridden through plenty of times. I make it appoint to suck it all in when I have the opportunity to spend time down there. Asside from the maze of double-slips, the basic track layout is actually quite simple as it's "simply" two apposing "Y" shapes facing each other laying on their sides with the "stems" on the East and west ends.
If I had my dream layout, it would be impossible to shoot this scene from that vantage point
Penn station is not a kit. Most stations have to be built from scratch. This video relies heavily on imagination and is more focussed on the train which was operating in real time according to actual timetables. I made the platforms from scratch.
Hi, These are HO scale trains. The NJT stuff is hard to find these days as Atlas hasn't reproduced the ALP44 and Walthers has yet to re-release the Horizon cars.
lol, well unfortunately, the prices aren't going down. It's an ongoing thing but I'd bargain to say that I probably have about $10k worth of stuff (including layout building materials and track)
Thanks. Modeling a huge underground facility in HO (let alone filiming it) would present numerous challenges that I'm sure many modelers can appreciate.
For now, like many others, I'll have to rely heavily on imagination.
i made the LIRR route from Huntington to Penn Station! i Have 10 M-7's running on it 10 M-1's and 8 M-3's! also 5 doube decker deisels! they are all lionel trains! very cool layout u have ther.
I had that MNRR engine, would you know where to get more or would i have to like....paint it? also does walthers still make the cab cars? if not i have to make those too
The MNRR engines are still floating around out there in NIB form. Walthers hasn't produced the cab cars in a while but they are still floating around out there too.
hey. i see that Metra HO train you have in the backround i was wondering if i could purchase those coaches and cab car from you? Send me a MESSAGE, thanks
I wouldn't call it a train set. I've never seen them offered all in one package. I have 1 of the NJT buses that I purchased YEARS ago. It's not true 1:87 scale though.
I miss having a train set,it was a hot wheel set(many many years ago) and it was really fun to operate,my question is where you get these trains from.
Very cute...now just stick a really dark ugly cylinder on top of all that and you'll have the *real* penn station (aka madison square garden). You'll also have to remove most of the trains, cuz unfortunately Penn Station isn't nearly that busy...go ride the rails, people!
My future dream model train layout which will come true will have an underground style Penn Station in a fictional Northeast city. Its going to be great. I have to make the decision on whether to build an arena on top (which would be scratchbuilt) with a trench below or create a station in style of the old Penn Station
Basic concept; Both are underground. (and yes, I'm aware that one is a through station and the other is stub ended with a turn-around) I appreciate if you were genuinely trying to clear things up but FYI, there was nowhere else to store that equipment on MY LAYOUT. I am open to financial contributions for layout expansion.
BTW, I'm from NY, and worked accross the street from Penn for three years and would commute into the city via GCT every day so you're not telling me anything new.
I'm afaid there is not. The closest you'll get is modifying the Loksound OBB 144 locomotive engien sound with a K5LA horn, and some more american sounds. Even so, it seems the only way to have a chance at adding sound is to remove the other cab from the locomotive and put a tiny speaker in there. Even so, i do not know where you can fit the Loksound decoder itself, especially on an ALP44 model, which the roof box isn't accurate, and if removed, has even less space.
Tell me, have you spent a decent amount of time gazing at the trains arriving at the real station?

a ha I see a Metro North Loco in one of those tracks! Does it run good?
TrainGuy18 2 years ago
I'd say it runs as good as any other Athearn Blue Box loco. I will say however that it can get quite loud.
marylindsayrr 2 years ago
I have the same Blue box model. Come to think of it it does get kind of loud! but its a good engine.

The ALP44 is from Atlas HO (Out of Production).
The commets are from walthers (sold out)
Both are floating around out there. I've seen them at hobby shows twice this year already.

Hi,
It's actually a stock Athearn Model.
Athearn simply painted a P40 shell in MN colors.
If I get an opportunity I will try to satisfy your request

That Metronorth P32... You built it yourself right?
Could you do a video of it arriving there? Please..

My apologies.
As you can see from some other posts, some people are actually serious.
My original reply was scaled back because I thought there was a possibility that you were being "funny"
I usually end a comment like that with a "lol" (for clarification).
In either case, I do apologize for my slightly aggressive response.
Feel free to keep commenting.

this woulda been so much realistic without the metra train on the far track

and the metro north train, Metro north P32ACs dont go to Penn Station and the Amtrak diesel, the only amtrak diesel in NYC Penn Staion is the P32AC.
