I am old enough to talk about all the great bands. Beatles. Stones. Eagles. Kiss. Pink Floyd. Van Halen. Blah blah blah. All have tremendous brand names; merchandising; the big money.
U2 is one the greatest bands ever. Same four guys for multiple years. Special kudos to manager Paul. You really pulled it off.
Hiwaymanx...listen to his voice nowadays. For example Islington Gig (November 2007) and Nelson Mandela birthday concert (June 2008) and then tell me his voice isn't recoverd.
Although his voice is not the same ,Who cares ? if he has been making success shouting to the world what is really important .I do not mind, I will follow him forever.
I've never heard this song live at a U2 show yet... This version is on the new JT exclusive release "live in Paris" DVD. I like it so much I went and covered this song on my page...
I'm glad somebody mentioned this about his voice on this tour because I've come to the same conclusion.
Personally I think his voice went out because they toured too often and Bono tended to sing every song with such passion and emotion that he unknowingly wore out his pipes. I think at times he liked to show of for the fans and felt invulnerable when belting out the high notes.
I've been on stage and believe me, anyone feels invulnerable when so many people cheer you on.
But when we listen to U2 during "Achtung Baby" and "Zooropa", his voice was still as powerful and reached as high as during Rattle and Hum and The Joshua Tree. Just listen to "ZooTV, live from Sydney".
I'd sooner come to the conclusion that he simply aged up and his voice grew less capable over the years. The main blow, I think, was taken somewhere between 1994 and 1997.
This is my most favourite song from U2 and this version of it is the best i've ever heard, thanx for posting it. Where is the venue of this concert in Paris? Looks like some kind of park or horse track. How many ppl. were there?
I am a huge U2 fan, and love their complete discography...however that being said, for my beloved boys to equal this performance NOW would be a fabulously hard feat. Bono's voice was at it's peak.
Yes, but could Bono at that time sing "Original of the Species" or "Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own" as he does now? Admittedly, he had much greater range then, but his voice now has the depth (i.e. soul) that only comes with age and experience. Listen to the opening lines of "Summer Rain" (the b-side to "Beautiful Day") and tell me if Bono circa '87 could pull it off.
I always found it bizar how his voice changed. They both have their features, virtues. While his 1987 was way more pure, way more stable and his range was greater, inmagine 1987 Bono singing Vertigo. That'd sound hell weird. His current voice is more of a rock voice, and of course he also has a lot of experience to control that voice.
If Bono were to sing "Vertigo" with his 1987 voice there are parts of the song that would arguably be better. I am thinking of the chorus, in particular the line "but you, give me something, I can feel." His range was much greater then and I can imagine him bending that phrase with great virtuosity. However, for the line "lights go down and all I know is that you give me something" I think his voice now is more conducive to that sentiment. What do you think? Thanks for your reply. :-)
Well, I think Bono's voice has always been sentiment. It is more conducive though. It has more flexibility but it sounds less impressive, imo. Lots of people therefore say his voice is a lot less impressive than the way it used to be. I think they're wrong, but I do agree on that the virtues of his current voice are les obvious.
Edge and Larry could definately pull it off and Adam is actually a far tighter player today. However Bono voice has changed alot since then... check out The Fly from Boston DVD or SBS from Chicago.. they still rock...
I love this.

True, Bono's voice never recovered after this tour. Too much smoking, drinking, partying, whatever. Hey, it happens to the best of us.
