I love Steve Walsh's performances as a member of Kansas when the band was complete but it's not like there are not any good singers any more. Daughtry and Rob Thomas being examples.
Steve just can't sing this song any longer. Move on!
I'm convinced the lyrics in the cd booklet are wrong. I'm guessing-'and there's times when i can't contain all that life is another gain'? Something like that? No way on earth he says 'all the feelings of love i'll gain'.
Steve sounds better now. Guess he cleaned up. I'm guessing all the insane keyboard pyrotechnics on the records was Kerry? Cos this seems so stripped-down. And skipping the middle 8 is criminal. Is Steve that 'basic' on the keys? And...if his voice is that bad why not play the song in a lower key? And yes-when he was 'right' there was no better singer than Steve Walsh.
I think If Steve Walsh wasn't trying to scream over the other instruments he wouldn't sound so bad. but you can see well here, he is really straining to be loud.
I dont see that happening ever again. Kansas will continue to tour like they have been until they get tired of it. :( If they were going to do a new album it would've already been done by now...
It does sound a bit empty. But that's because their is no one to take the place of Kerry in this lineup. They need another guitar player/keyboard player with backup vocals to get that full Kansas sound on this one.
I would like to see Kansas carry on, but since Walsh's voice is shot, they really need to find a young tenor to carry the lead and continue to use Walsh on keyboards and harmony. Your opinion?
I agree, but it will kind of kill the spirit of Kansas. After all, Walsh is sort of what you think of when you hear "Kansas", but his vocals are fading now, and he can't keep up with the pace. Phil Ehart is still at his best though! What a drummer!
Well, you're right about Phil but in my opinion Steve's voice is getting better now. On Somewhere to Elsewhere his voice is way better than it was on Freaks of Nature. Of course he's not as good as he was in his younger days, but he's still able to use his voice in a perfect way.
I would like to see Kansas carry on, but since Walsh's voice is shot, they really need to find a young tenor to carry the lead and continue to use Walsh on keyboards and harmony. Your opinion?
my opinion is that, after seeing them again last summer, they do an excellent job with what they have and shouldn't change. yes it's a shame that walsh's voice is nothing like it was 30 years ago; he had one of the best voices in music, but trust me, they're still excellent live. they've having a great time these days, and walsh is getting better each year.
The problem is that Steve Walsh had probably the finest most dynamic voice of any American prog rock band in history. While Terry Luttrell had a nice voice, it lacked the soul and vocal prowess that Walsh could bring to his performance (Styx also noted). But with Walsh, Kansas became the 1st American prog rock band to have real hit potential as most American prog rock eschewed vocal mastery. And now when you hear Walsh sounding almost cartoonish It's hard to take the band seriously.
I understand that. All I can say then is be thankful for Billy Greer's excellent backing vocals (he's fun as a frontman too) and that the music is still so top notch.
HAHAHA oh man. Parts of this don't sound too bad but Walsh is out of tune almost the whole song. I mean really...ouch. I think they should either move it down a key or leave it off the set. Enough of my bitching, I still really wanna catch them this year =)
Robby was the stage presence in the band. Its not the same with Ragsdale. Sorry but I will not see this current lineup. Protokaw ( Kerrys band) is a better band than this line up.
i had that thought at first too, but let me just tell you, the band is playing some of the best live music ive ever heard, and they're having a great time with it. the setlist has been more or less the same for the past 10 years, but some things were switched around when Rags came back. Robby was a great stage presence, but he was just getting tired, and rags coming back gave the band an entirely new energy. go see them. if you dont enjoy it, i'll buy you a soda.
The band will fall into oblivion, but they were in a league of their own some 30 years ago. Everything in its time. Kansas touched many souls over the years on many different issues, no more no less.
The band was on Robbie for months asking him to practice his intonation on the violin. For people who do not know what that means, It is playing with a nice tone. That is the reason 10 violinist could play his violin and every person would sound different. He would also forget lyrics. Walsh finally blew up and put pressure on the situation. Hey this all happened a long time ago and Robbie has all the great recordings of himself with this great band.
He sounded nice on the DVD. I think he did most of his practicing when he was younger when his father was training him to be a concert violinist. He's got the chops, but has a real "rock 'n roll" attitude towards things like practice.
What he could have done is put some effects on his violin to make it sound a little better, if he was willing to let his tone slide through not keeping up his chops.
Regarding Robby, i saw a post in another room about this show, that he was very ill (flu) during the show. No idea if it's true or not, but Cheers to him for continuing on. The true soul of the band, and sooooooooo sorry to see him leave.
The real story is that when Ragsdale left the band Walsh was very upset. Robbie came back and did a very good job until after the dvd in Atlanta. Then things turned sour. Walsh says that robbie was not a good influence on him in trying to keep clean. Robbie went to phil one mourning after a show and just said I can't do this anymore.
After a little getting used to, Walsh doesn't sound too bad. Still, I think they should have ghanged the key. I begin to feel pain in my own throat when I hear that the singer is struggling to hit the notes! Also, where is the original interlude?
All bands switch up there songs live! As for Walsh he is hit or miss from show to show! To this day you can find posts of the band live where his voice sounds amazing and then you'll find another one like this where you cringe a little bit! The really rockin' middle part is from "A Glimpse Of Home"!
I love this song. This is shortly before Robby left the band. I've got this enitre show and he doesn't look very happy during the performance at all. even his playing is suffering.
horrible audio, and walsh don't sound bad for 56 years old at the time. however he's not sounding real crisp either which is understood. comes a time when we all have to say, maybe it's time to retire. love these guys and they will live forever within all of us who are fans.
Im sad because i think that was one of the last concert from Robby with kansas.
