I watched a few videos of Barenaked Ladies playing this song live, and it sounds more like they say "Descartes or Deuteronomy" -- there's definitely a D at the beginning and it sounds a lot like the third syllable is "or." Plus the father of modern philosophy seems to fit better in an epic about the events of history (alongside a book in the Bible) than a failed encyclopedia :/
