Why not slice them instead of mashing or cubeing? Also can't you process them before you boil them then boil. or do you have to boil them with the skin on?
@SJPrepper0569 sure you can do them however you like. This was more about creating a product that takes us less room and rehydrates very rapidly. Blessings!
Ohhhh! Your vidshave inspired me to get on the stick and get a dehydrator! I was fortunate enough to find an Exquisite 9 shelf, (new) , on craigslist for 175 so rewatching your dehydration vids tonight for shopping tomorrow. Thank you so much for sharing what you know.
Lord above, I do so miss Texas and the good folk there. Blessings to you and yours.
I do store 3 years of pure dog chow but I have planned for them to have rice, hamburger and carrots sincedog food doesn't store long enough. Blessings!
Good question homeshortly. I have Cats & Dogs and have wondered if you can vacuum seal in a jar the dried pet food? I use organic pet food which if it doesn't work could be terribly costly and even worse when my pets needed it most the food wouldn't be there!
@originaLkomatoast I'm using cling wrap now. My pumpking adventure was a nightmare. I ended up throwing the sheets into the bathtub and soaking the pumpkin off when I got it stuck to the trays. Then the tub was clogged with pumpking so I had to pour a half-gallon of bleach down the drain. Which worked better than Drain-o.
@AuntDuddie I know it sucked but I can't stop laughing just imagining you over the tub with pumpkin in the drain. Almost as bad when my daughter when she was little decided she needed to make mud pies in the tub and I was just so happy it was quiet I didn't realize she was bringing in buckets of mud lol. Blessings!
First time I did pumpkins I followed the directions of a 'famous' dehydrator lady. What a mess. I'll do them on the sheets or on cling lined tray next time. I think I lost 2 whole pumpkins on that venture! Thanks for the video!
@AuntDuddie much with the excalibur the sheets can be rolled so it was just messy now a round hard tray what a nightmare. Surprised you were able to get it off at all. Blessings!
I'm new too. Do you vacuum seal the jar of powdered sweet potatoes? I love your down to earth-no nonsense methods. I prep on a strict budget so all of this helps. Thanks
Just finished the 12 pounds I had done. Started them before your video, so I baked mine, sliced and used the "holey" sheets and sifted before storing, but mine came out the same. Couldn't have done it without watching your previous pumpkin video! TY Bexar!
I just got my first dehydrator, so I'm just learning. What kind of plastic did you use? is it something specific to each dehydrator? mine didn't come with any kind of covering for use with mashed up food like the sweet potatoes.
I wondered how you could get rid of the onion smell. Took two days to get the scent out of the house. Got to get some sweet potatoes now. My son said I was obsessed, then he asked me to dehydrate some Texas Pete and Rotel. The Texas Pete is drying now.
@LAPrepper1 that's why I use the oranges. You can also dehydrate outside depending on the humidity level. Or just do the first 4-6 hours outside Will really help to reduce the smells. Blessings!
oranges/onions, will try. It's too humid in LA(lower Alabama to dry outside most of the time). Texas Pete powder, makes it really portable(for my son). Crasins (like store bought) maybe?
Thanks for your reply. How do I find out the proper water/food ratio for rehydrating? Do you know of a good book or is it just a trial and error type of thing?
That was so cool. Another reviewer asked but I didn't see an answer. Do you think you could do this method for white potatoes? Cause right now my store has 3lb bag for $1.
I just love your videos! Thank you so much for taking the time to upload them. I started watching your videos yesterday and I dried two trays each of frozen mixed veggies and peas. Finished product is only two pints! You're right when you said it takes a while to stock pile but it will grow eventually. I've got oranges drying now and I think I'll do sweet potatoes like you did in this video. Thanks!
you got me wondering if you could do the same thing with russet potatoes and then use them for instant mashed potatoes? hmm that would be great but I wonder about all the starch in them
I am definitely going to try this. I have been dehydrating my sweet potatoes in slices. Thank you for showing how well it rehydrates. Gotta head off to the store now! ; )
P.S. Your daughter is very lucky to have a mother to teach her such skills. My mom just laughs at me.
@NingasKugon09 It's really not to bad I purchased a refurbished from the manufacturer. The other kinds work just as good I just like the large flat surface without a hole in the center. Blessings!
@Rhiahl Gonna have to watch that although I never have paid much attention to wether I am using sweet potatoes or yams same difference in cooking. Blessings!
I am just starting out with dehydrating and was wondering what your advice on a good dehydrator would be. I don't mind spending the money to get a good one. Thanks!
@Nebulax123 Check out excalibur refurbished on their web site. But I used an american harves with 12 trays for about 20 years with great results you just need to reposition the trays half way through the drying process. Blessings!
@kastnmagic You could go either way. Although I never store in Ball jar for long term. Usually the jars are for use this year and mylar with O2 for long term. Blessings!
I have dried them also.. only difference is, is I take a peice of wax paper and put a big spoonful on it. then take another peice of wax paper and lay it on top, take a rolling pin and roll it out like a pancake, take off the top wax paper and pick up the bottom one and flip it over onto your dehydrator tray.. Just an idea. I just found it dries faster! God bless!
@snaps81625 Yes the more even you lay it out the easier it is to dry. I just usually leave my dehydrator on over night and just about everything dries by then. Blessings!
could you we always spray our trays with cooking spray.

@watercopper I try to avoid oils since they can go rancid in long term storage. Blessings!

Is there an alternative to use in place of the sheets? They are so costly to purchase it would cost as much as I paid for my used 3900.
