Maaaaaaaan this song makes me think about camping down yonder at Shady Grove I FUCKING MISS SCHWAGSTOCK AND JERRY:( Hope to see yall at zoe when it's back down yonder at shady grove;)
@seansi There are a number of places named Shady Grove in the US, but since the song is quite old and the eastern seaboard was settled first, I'd put my money on Shady Grove, Maryland, just outside Washington DC.
@sakuraxms I've heard some other versions of this song - most of them are a bit...corny. Jerry just gives it that feel, ya know? It puts you in that grove (groove?) and makes you want to go for a hike. That could be just me, though.
Does anyone have a copy of the "Death by Banjo" version of this song? My friend had a DBB CD and we lost it and there was a shady grove version on there that we loved to death! If anyone can help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. Loing you all.
no offense everyone, but I think shady grove on the pizza tapes sound better.they seem to speed up in the middle an do some "hot " pickin. this one sounds sadder though.
First time I heard this was the quicksilver version. Great song, if you have a look around there is a english guy "KRIS DREVER" doing a real good version in a open tunings,
shady grove was the name of a bar on Haight Street in San Francisco, I saw some great music there back in the 70's. jerry's song writer Robert Hunter used to play there.
This is a bluegrass standard and this is the best version I've ever heard. Incredible musicianship from Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. I'd kill to be this good. If you don't get it, keep trying!!!
I grew up listening to Pizza Tapes and Not Just For Kids, and it wasnt untill about a year ago in college that I started listening to some of his other works. He really was a talented man. Teddy Bear Picinic will always be one of my favorite songs.
i found this by accident. it was on my computer as an unnamed track and i was downstairs when it came on and raced up and named it so i could find it later
@Ultranothing well actually not being rude but if you were just being sarcastic then ok but he said jam session because this was just going it was not planned all out it was improv meaning "jam"
Doesnt sound like they do. Either way there is never going to be anything more epic ever recorded than the few jam sessions we are able to hear today. Pizza Tapes just happens to be just as epic.
@stompydingdong "y'all"? You've got to be kidding me. Too f'n lazy to type "All of you"? And you wonder why rednecks have a rep for being ignorant morons? Dude, learn to speak proper English.
exqusite ! i saw him and his band in san francisco in THE STONE long time back once, great acoustic set that was ! can anyone download the great version of shady grove by bill monroe? i don´think its the same song , only the same title, but its terrific!

I declare everytime I hear this song there be whole new verses set to it!! I like these here. Jerry must have made up some of them. Great version on this old time classic folk tune!!
I am pretty sure that this song can be traced all the way back to A scottish folk song so I doubt it references any place in the U.S. I believe it is about a woman and the writer's associtation of the woman with this place. Anyway, there have been several versions of this song recorded by various folk, bluegrass, etc. musicians. It is the ultimate simple love song. I would reccomend Doc Watson's version as well as this one.
Went campin in Tiger Georgia once and for some reason this tune was happily playing in my mind the entire three days...peaceful experience and sorta like a trip to fairyland
i had a friend nickname shadygrove , from seatle a hippy of 57 years ,i have no news of him from alot of months ,he was very sick ,he is a lover of traditional american music ,if you know him say me
i read in a bio that jerry's love of folk was influenced by the following... Mississippi John Hurt, Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Ewan MacColl, Jimmie Rodgers, Doc Watson, The New Lost City Ramblers, Dock Boggs, Rev. Gary Davis, Hank Williams
Shady Grove doesn't refer to any place. It's actually referring to a woman. Listen once more to these lyrics with that in mind. :-) The melody definitely predates any Shady Grove in America.
If you enjoyed Jerry and David's rendition, give a listen to Doc Watson's version. If you've never heard Doc, I strongly suggest you give him a listen- I think you'll be hooked.
@Ultranothing , it seems that every state in the South has a "Shady Grove" community or town. But, I believe in this ballad, "Shady Grove" is a pretty girl.
@13chubchub 'shady grove' is an american folk song dating back to the eighteenth century. many renditions describe the speaker's love for a woman called shady grove, though there are also variations which refer to the speaker travelling to shady grove: a place in harlan, kentucky

The mando isn't a regular one, it is a bass-ier instrument. At least I can't get my mandos to sound like that...and I have a couple Dawg re-creations... Thanks guys for making so much great music.
