  • Whoever clicked dislike must have by accident

  • @purplesmokeman Or they're the type of people whose brains have been jarred clear out of their skulls by years of thumping hip-hop bass.

    Seattle or Portland. I'll look.

  • shady grove is a metaphor for going out and gettin' some strange when your wife won't leave you the f alone.

Bound for shady grove, the cheatin side of town ;)

  • where is this shady grove he speaks of?

  • @seansi There are a number of places named Shady Grove in the US, but since the song is quite old and the eastern seaboard was settled first, I'd put my money on Shady Grove, Maryland, just outside Washington DC.

  • @MICHKAC yeah i have a shady grove real close to me, VA but i doubt its here. thx for the info tho!

  • i have to sing this in chorus but its waaaaay different than this.....

  • @sakuraxms I've heard some other versions of this song - most of them are a bit...corny. Jerry just gives it that feel, ya know? It puts you in that grove (groove?) and makes you want to go for a hike. That could be just me, though.

  • @Ultranothing lol

  • @sakuraxms Did you have to do it at Atlantic Coast High school or some high school of a name resembling Atlantic Coast high?

  • "Shady grove my true love

    shady grove my darlin'

    Shady grove my true love

    I'm going back to Harlan"

Thats the version I grew up with.

  • Does anyone have a copy of the "Death by Banjo" version of this song? My friend had a DBB CD and we lost it and there was a shady grove version on there that we loved to death! If anyone can help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. Loing you all.

  • @AnthonyPLUR If you can tell me the album name, I'll try to find it for you.

  • @Ultranothing pizza tapes is the name

  • @AnthonyPLUR peace love unity rebellion

  • i'm not much for Leroy Troy as he sounds too modern and assertive, but his Shady Grove is really good.

  • LOVE YOU JERRY!!!!! Blessing's,Eternal Peace,LOVE,Light...Oneness....:)

  • Thank you, love it!

  • no offense everyone, but I think shady grove on the pizza tapes sound better.they seem to speed up in the middle an do some "hot " pickin. this one sounds sadder though.

  • really shuffles along ,,great

  • Ahhh Jerry, how I miss you!

  • First time I heard this was the quicksilver version. Great song, if you have a look around there is a english guy "KRIS DREVER" doing a real good version in a open tunings,

  • @Luxthepanther -google Fairport Convention to hear Matty Groves

  • Ask them what Kathy and I said about that night, we were there...the rest is hearsay...

  • shady grove was the name of a bar on Haight Street in San Francisco, I saw some great music there back in the 70's. jerry's song writer Robert Hunter used to play there.

  • @devinlucid does it still exist?

  • Also a Shady Grove, Tennessee--unincorporated!

  • To the 4 people who gave this a thumbs down....get a clue

  • @TheSkinndog i think its must be 4 old guys who just missed the like button

  • @TheSkinndog Yeah they should all stick to playing with their penis!

  • This is a bluegrass standard and this is the best version I've ever heard. Incredible musicianship from Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. I'd kill to be this good. If you don't get it, keep trying!!!

  • Uh, ohh - love this rendition also. Yeah, I be an ol Dead Head. Miss their concerts and Marin County.

  • we're singing this song in choir :D

    lmao i love it.

  • I grew up listening to Pizza Tapes and Not Just For Kids, and it wasnt untill about a year ago in college that I started listening to some of his other works. He really was a talented man. Teddy Bear Picinic will always be one of my favorite songs.

  • A 'Shady Grove' is the space around a chicks hairy pussy

  • Thats funny

  • Euphoria

  • i found this by accident. it was on my computer as an unnamed track and i was downstairs when it came on and raced up and named it so i could find it later

  • y'all know this was a recorded jam session right?

  • @stompydingdong No, I thought it was being beamed telepathically, directly to my brain.

  • @Ultranothing: i don't need your sarcasm, dude

  • @Ultranothing well actually not being rude but if you were just being sarcastic then ok but he said jam session because this was just going it was not planned all out it was improv meaning "jam"

  • Jerry G. is tha man!

  • @Ultranothing ...

    Jerry G. is tha man!

  • @stompydingdong

Doesnt sound like they do. Either way there is never going to be anything more epic ever recorded than the few jam sessions we are able to hear today. Pizza Tapes just happens to be just as epic.

  • @stompydingdong "y'all"? You've got to be kidding me. Too f'n lazy to type "All of you"? And you wonder why rednecks have a rep for being ignorant morons? Dude, learn to speak proper English.

  • @tommerrigan1956: cool story bro

  • exqusite ! i saw him and his band in san francisco in THE STONE long time back once, great acoustic set that was ! can anyone download the great version of shady grove by bill monroe? i don´think its the same song , only the same title, but its terrific!

  • What else is there to say, it's just magic. You gotta thank the devil, god or whomever that there were musicians like that among us so we can enjoy that real and great music. No junk-sh!t like the chart music stuff that is raping our ears frequently.

  • Brilliance!!

  • why is nobody talking about Grisman!? hes amazing!!! must say, i like him much more than Garcia...

  • Please, someone post Ms Collins weep from this great album. It reminds me of loved ones, and I am stranded in India 10 years now, can't find it. Let me know, people will enjoy. Thanks.

PS- Best Shady Grove of them all, no doubt

  • happy b-day jer:)

  • Carlisle, Cumbria, UK

  • does anyone know the name of the song at the end?

  • Damn I miss Jerry...

  • i will always love jerry garcia

  • i miss jerry, i miss this angle on life.

  • Shady Grove is the name of his sweetheart, the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Grove.

  • This is the first Bluegrass song I have really liked, its so smooth and perfect for Alan Wake, I love it :)

  • Jerry and David play this one well.

    What happened to folk-rock?

  • Legends Never Die!

  • Everey note plucked I feel in my heart, every verse makes me wish for my old friend, Riesa Rose. Miss you, hope you and Matt are ok. Hope to talk to you soon!

  • shady grove more likely bast off a song from the 16th centery "mattie grove" not a place lol and as far as some of there studio stuff some of it has to grow on ya ive gotten a few that i didnt care for at furst but now love just took the right mood for the song to speak to me

  • Theres a Shady Grove Pennsylvania as well

  • Loved this. I used to do this song years ago but I learnt a slightly different version of the lyrics.

  • i just wanna die like jerry

  • No Shady Grove in CT :(

  • If i cant have girl i love...i wont have none at all

  • Ahh....the good music. I still dream in Dead.

  • there is also a Shady Grove in Missouri.

  • i heard this song at school we are going to sing it. i love it

  • I declare everytime I hear this song there be whole new verses set to it!! I like these here. Jerry must have made up some of them. Great version on this old time classic folk tune!!

  • The biggining pard of the song is my flute solo from a peice called "Homestead 1850" arrange by ROn Cowherd. :)

  • theres a shady grove in PA too.

  • peaches in the summer time apples in the fall if i cant have the girl i love i dont want one at all. RIP Jerry.

  • I am pretty sure that this song can be traced all the way back to A scottish folk song so I doubt it references any place in the U.S. I believe it is about a woman and the writer's associtation of the woman with this place. Anyway, there have been several versions of this song recorded by various folk, bluegrass, etc. musicians. It is the ultimate simple love song. I would reccomend Doc Watson's version as well as this one.

  • I have always loved The Dead. However, Jerry's work with David stands alone in acoustic music. They are azz-kickers. Dave can really play.

  • who wrote Shady Grove?

  • 4:23 name song??

    thx

  • Beautiful version!

  • la classe

  • Went campin in Tiger Georgia once and for some reason this tune was happily playing in my mind the entire three days...peaceful experience and sorta like a trip to fairyland

  • i had a friend nickname shadygrove , from seatle a hippy of 57 years ,i have no news of him from alot of months ,he was very sick ,he is a lover of traditional american music ,if you know him say me

  • i would greatly appreciate it if someone gave me some names of good folk musicians, inluenced by garcia or those that influenced him

  • @123daydream321...

i read in a bio that jerry's love of folk was influenced by the following... Mississippi John Hurt, Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Ewan MacColl, Jimmie Rodgers, Doc Watson, The New Lost City Ramblers, Dock Boggs, Rev. Gary Davis, Hank Williams

  • What a amazing voice now that is just raw soul. RIP jerry we miss u.

  • Good take on the song... you guys should check out the 'john bull shady grove' version. Found it the other day, its dark but been loving it!

  • jerry going back to his roots.

  • It refers to a girl and a place - both named Shady Grove. The word play humor common in many Irish traditional folk songs.

Fantastic version true to the spirit! Miss ya Jerry!

  • Shady Grove doesn't refer to any place. It's actually referring to a woman. Listen once more to these lyrics with that in mind. :-) The melody definitely predates any Shady Grove in America.

  • Thank you Mike for sending me this song. You have just introduced me to a whole new world of music. Can't thank you enough.

  • If you enjoyed Jerry and David's rendition, give a listen to Doc Watson's version. If you've never heard Doc, I strongly suggest you give him a listen- I think you'll be hooked.

  • Thanks for the tip. I am familiar with Doc. Have a CD or 2. I will look out for it. Thanks

  • @spisblog Man, I checked out Doc, and to be honest he felt stiff and structured- completely different to this version.

  • I guess I could listen to this little ditty, one o' my favorites to pick (banjo)... FOREVER. Grisman & Garcia... Da Best!

Keep on Rockin'... so sweet... so tight!

  • Shady Grove, TN in Warren County.

  • i wonder where shadey grove is at?

  • I know there's a Shady Grove, GA. It's in Carroll county, I believe.

  • @Ultranothing , it seems that every state in the South has a "Shady Grove" community or town. But, I believe in this ballad, "Shady Grove" is a pretty girl.

  • @Ultranothing There's a shady grove in arkansaw too

  • @Ultranothing Yea it is

  • @Ultranothing ---Also a Shady Grove, Tennessee---unincorporated!

  • @Ultranothing -Shady Grove, I believe, was a person not a place. A variation of Irish song Matty Groves

  • @Ultranothing -Shady Grove, I believe, was a person not a place. A variation of Irish song Matty Groves

  • @Ultranothing It is in Georgia for sure, and knowing girls from Goergia, the song makes perfect sense! Damn the south!

  • @13chubchub 'shady grove' is an american folk song dating back to the eighteenth century. many renditions describe the speaker's love for a woman called shady grove, though there are also variations which refer to the speaker travelling to shady grove: a place in harlan, kentucky

    hope this helps

  • @13chubchub The Church i go to is called shady grove

  • @13chubchub ireland i think this song is an old irish folk song i beleive

  • Comment removed

  • if anyone could post the SHADY GROVE by bill monroe?! ( it goes something like " shady grove shady grove my darling, shady grove goin back to harlem ...") thanks in advance !

  • @buchananstreet Thats the version Doc Watsons plays

  • @buchananstreet Thats the version Doc Watson plays

  • @13chubchub it isn't a place but rather a locale

  • @13chubchub he says where it is in one of the other versions

  • @13chubchub it`s the old folks home..

  • @13chubchub

Its the girls name, not a place. But some versions refer to Harlan, KY.

  • beards of a feather, these two.

  • Excellent sound. Check out "Old & in the way" for more of what I refer to as some of the best grass I ever heard. Keep up the good David!

  • Wow. So late I discover this great musician. No wonder he is so missed.

    Just wow..

  • you unearthed a bag full of love man!.... check out the dead....

in this tune, he's the guitar player (MOSTLY ALWAYS WAS) only

  • I miss Jerry

  • Jerry's guitar sounds great. If you like this tune check out a version done by a new kid, Nick Ogawa. It's awesome.

  • This modal romp is just a blast to play along with. C and Dm and then work the melody more and more, heck go from single note lines to double stops to chords. Endless fun for 2 simple chords. The mando isn't a regular one, it is a bass-ier instrument. At least I can't get my mandos to sound like that...and I have a couple Dawg re-creations... Thanks guys for making so much great music. This version and the Pizza Tapes version are must haves.

    rk

  • garcia back to his roots.

  • what is that jam after shady grove? or was it just made for that bootlegs and rarities advertisement?

  • chills sent down spine

  • Great song..Love this album as well.

  • Great, amazing...

  • there is a tab book w/cd on garcias banjo breaks on the album--old and in the way-super good and accurate. he was great

  • Lovely but this song will always mean 'Quicksiver Messenger Service' to this listener

  • This is by far my favorite version of Shady Grove. Gotta love Jerry and David!

  • what is that lazy little jam at the ending. who is that? its tits

  • come on lazy kids.......where are you??

  • just great.
