They stopped it in the late 80s. In about 1987or 1988, this intro was used until 1992, then a green curtain intro was used until 1995, then the Monsterpiece Theatre finished alltogethor.

Well, not exactly. The gray monster named Spalding is a parody of the late Spalding Gray who was a monologue performer. I wrote a report about him for a class I recently took. He was a very fascinating figure. "Monster in a Box" is the name of one of his monologues.
