I use the Evans torque key and am satisfied with it. When people say use your ears, well that is correct, but using the key doesn't mean you don't use your ears also. Once I find the sound I like I write the settings down on the head as in Top=8 Bottom=9. I tune for sound and when I find it, I write out the tensions setting that produced that sound. Is the tension exactly the same on every lug you find with a drum dial? Probably not but I doubt anyone, yourself, or any band member can hear.
i have a drum dial and i use it frequently to tune up my drums after playing gigs over the weekend. It does not work as displayed in this video (not for me) - it takes several rotations around both top and bottom heads and then it takes further listening to get the tension/sound perfect. I would say the product has helped me get better at tuning and at least gets the tension rods somewhat close to being the same but its not perfect and a fair bit of ear work is still involved.
In the studio with 4 kits the drum dial when used in center of the head gets you to an ear tuning spot really fast! The "lug tuning" hasn't impressed me much at all, but for say snare heads it's really fast..then ear lug tuning takes over and rules supreme..speeds up the process in a huge way!
Falae Freddy! Vi que tu fala português irmão, então lá vai...
Qual o princípio do Torque Key. Como sei a tensão que tenho que usar em cada tom... Quantas voltas tenho que dar no TK? Existe algum macete pra saber?
wow that may be a mad instrument to help tuning your drums.. but the drum sounds like it has a pile of dog shit in it.. sorry get better batter heads..
i bought a dial and i thought it was going to be overpriced, but the reason i'm not so pissed off with the price is because it can CONSISTENTLY tune your drums accurately. yes you can do the same with your ears, but this saves time and its got the fine tuning capability that i just dont think my ears can manage. of course you can roughly tune it with the dial too, but if you want consistent accuracy its a big help.
ethan1336, the toms should be tuned to what ever drumdial number that sounds good TO YOU. there is a 'reccommended' number range to tune it to & it should be noted that there is a certain number range the drum dial is the most accurate in. drum dial advantage is that it is not affected by a tension rod that is harder to turn than the others even tho it is not as tight. I have none like this on my current Mapex Saturn kit but I have had stiff tension rods on other kits I have owned in the past.
it'd be very difficult to damage a drum head with the drum dial. i have no idea what he's talking about there. the drum dial is the best for those of us without perfect ears or tons of patience.
the torque key does nothing but tell you your lug torque. great for protecting you hardware, not so great for tuning drums.
I love how people are like "THAT TOM SOUNDS TERRIBLE!" as if you're gonna get a decent sound with a camera mic that's about 15 feet away, and then listening on laptop speakers.
2 - you have to manually fine tune when using the torque key. It does a good job of getting them in the right ball park but they don't get them perfect.
i just use the evans tourque and to make sure they all have the same tension i got around the edge of the head with a stick right next to the lug and tap it a couple times and go to the one across to make sure it has the same tone
you can get them online, or you can get them at a music store like sam ash. other companies make them too, not just evens. i was talking to someone who used one(hes amazing in the drum tuning art) and he said he actualy learned to feal the tension of the head using this tool. now he can feal were the head is at with his fingures. he said is was a pretty cool tool, but i havnt seen him using it. he usualy uses a normal drum key now, but that probably because he doesn't need the torque key anymore
but u know the evans torque key rite its like from 1 til like 6 its really loose so how many times did u turn to get it to ur 6 or 5 or watever tention u put
and u dont make sense when u talk u sound retarded u call me a retard u spell it retred ya....this is ur comment "no its not.. are u retred.. tuning by ears or by pressure .. you must be a dipshit.. buy the product before u know what u are talking about"
do u know how retarded u sound!? and yes drum dial does work good
i think u are stupid . you wrote this so their for ur statement is BS the drum dial wrecks your drums and its actually about the same accuracy... and then you say it work good...????
well theirs 4 different turn i suggest loosening it off completletly as far as it goes then to it once around to the 0 and put the batter heads on the 4 and the reasonit on 5 or 6
Drum Dial is the way to go. Yes be careful, just dont slide it across the head and you will be fine. You will get the same sound in the middle of the drum for each one, but if you miss the middle of the head (as we all do) you will get a better tone when using the drum dial. But the best tool you can use is your ears.
I don't use these devices as often as it might seem. I still don't have any preferred settings. What I can say is that the torque may be a good starting point but your ear is your most important "tool". Your final touch when tuning is what your drum sound should be all about.
OK, I appreciate the usefulness of these tools as a learning aid. They do exactly what it says on the box. But we are not pitch perfect singers, or scale progression guru's of the guitar. We are drummers!!!! We make or drums sound how we like them. Poop to pitch. Poop to scale perfection. If they sound sexy they are sexy. I can count to 4
Hi. I know you weren´t asking me. I tried two torque keys and they were not the same. In mine the snare clicked at 3 but my friends clicked at 5. So he tuned his drums lower if he used my numbers. Sorry it´s hard to explane (English is not my language).
When you use the DrumDial you don't need to do this. You find the highest tension rod and bring the others to the same pitch and so on. When you use the Torque or the original tuning keys yes you should always go for the opposite rods.
You're right on! You know... after testing these devices in the end the only thing to trust is your ears. Even though the devices work well training your ears is the way to go to creating your own drum sound.
if you tune the top head to 75 and your bottom to 74 it sounds way better and it sounds amazing if you use an evans e-ring on the top head.you dont get a constant ring and the pitch goes from high to low and it sounds better especially if it gets muted with a e-rin,just saying
Man I love my drum dial, but that Tama thing looks sweet because my heads have little round circles all around the outside ahahah. How much are the Torques?
DrumDial is more accurate as maccadiodrums said... It takes longer and isn't as easy as you have to read the values off the dial but it is way more accurate.
It's hard to say... probably not!!! if you use the same heads (batter and response) you would still have to consider the kind of wood and sizes of each kit. Try it and let us know the results.
think about the accuracy difference btween those two method, drum torque can be wrong when the lug has rust, misalignment etc.drum dial is more accurate
If the lug has rust or dmg you should no be tuning with it and you should be replacing it so their for ur statement is BS the drum dial wrecks your drums and its actually about the same accuracy...
What size is the drum you are using n this video?

@msownagepwnage
a simple 2 inch drum like most product demos use because they're LAZY.

leo2372 3 years ago
i usually do 9 on the snare and 6 on the toms.
for the bottom heads you can either make it equal, higher or lower, its all preference. i wouldnt do anything lower than 5

but u know the evans torque key rite its like from 1 til like 6 its really loose so how many times did u turn to get it to ur 6 or 5 or watever tention u put
