That's an interesting story timmyboy except for the fact that the "Illiniwek" tribe doesn't exist anymore and hasn't since the 1830's. The Illiniwek were a collection of native american tribes, mostly Peorias. There's actually a lot of evidence that shows the dance was entirely fabricated from various native american dances from around the country.

The Chief logo itself was in no way disrespectful. A far cry from The Braves with their drunk injun. I went to many games and had great times. I will say I don't know that I ever liked the idea of a white guy doing the stuff at halftime however. They could have avoided a lot of trouble using a native.

First off, Chief Illiniwek isn't the U of I's "mascot". University of Illinois doesn't have a mascot... The Chief is a symbol to the University...

And as for calling one of the greatest College traditions a dancing pansy, all of the former Chief Illiniweks have been Eagle scouts, and have taken numerous lessons from the Illiniwek tribe on how to capture this dance appropriately and accurately...

So get your story straight before insulting anyone.

Amazing! Who knew this would be Chief's last homecoming?! I noticed the sigma pi letters in one of the photos. I was a Phi Sig, my husband is a Triangle. I cried the day when they tore your old house down, it happened over the summer in 1997 I believe. Glad to know your chapter is still up and running, in Urbana. Triangle, SigmaPi, and PhiSigmaSigma chapters are all the oldest existing chapters of their respective fraternities--funny how they used to be all on the same corner of the universe!
