  • its ok

  • Lame.

  • Please tell me how this could possibly construed as disrespectful????????????????/

  • Nice presentation

  • That's an interesting story timmyboy except for the fact that the "Illiniwek" tribe doesn't exist anymore and hasn't since the 1830's. The Illiniwek were a collection of native american tribes, mostly Peorias. There's actually a lot of evidence that shows the dance was entirely fabricated from various native american dances from around the country.

  • The Chief logo itself was in no way disrespectful. A far cry from The Braves with their drunk injun. I went to many games and had great times. I will say I don't know that I ever liked the idea of a white guy doing the stuff at halftime however. They could have avoided a lot of trouble using a native.

  • Why do people boo? I don't get it.

  • @Ringo111222 They're saying "CHIEF" duh!

  • Some of the best years of my life!! Honestly..this band, this school....SOOOOO PROUD to be an Alumni! Hail to the Orange!

  • timmyboy. There is no such thing as the Illiniwek. they are extinct by the hand of the Sioux...which also happened to make the chief's head dress. This is the same as a nazi making a jew's menorah.

  • I think firing the Board of Trustees might help the cause. An elected Board will stand up to the NCAA if they want to get re elected. Go Chief

  • why did they retire the cheif hes awesome the games arnt the same with out him

  • you're right man. Its all about being politically correct. The American Indians descended fromm the Illini tribe were offended by Chief Illiniwek. I loved the Chief, and I still do. I believe The Chief honored the Illini tribe in everything he did. He will be back one day. What a great day it will be.

  • supposedly it was disrespectful to the native american culture by portraying a chief with war-paint

  • spellmeyerbecca - Logan Ponce did not perform the "last" dance - Dan Maloney did at Assembly Hall. Logan Ponce performed the last dance at Memorial Stadium, as is tradition for the assistant Chief to perform at the last football game of the season.

  • Are you some kind of idiot??

First off, Chief Illiniwek isn't the U of I's "mascot". University of Illinois doesn't have a mascot... The Chief is a symbol to the University...

And as for calling one of the greatest College traditions a dancing pansy, all of the former Chief Illiniweks have been Eagle scouts, and have taken numerous lessons from the Illiniwek tribe on how to capture this dance appropriately and accurately...

So get your story straight before insulting anyone.

  • You have one fact wrong timmyboy316. All of the Chiefs are not Eagle scouts.

Early on this was a requirement because Indian Lore is a large part of scouting. As the years passed this became more and more difficult and the rule was eventually thrown out.

This came from the mouth of the current Chief Logan Ponce. Logan preformed the last dance at the hall and became this years chief at the high school in the official vacation home of Chief Illniwek Gibson City, Illinois

  • @timmyboy316 They did have a maskot and it was chief, They had to ger reed of him though because someone from that tribe went to this school and was offended. They still do the same songs though and chant "cheif" they just dont have him anymore.

  • @rapmansam 1) spell correctly or I will not take your next comment seriously.

    2) I go to the University now, dumbass and I'm in the Marching Illini. Chief was never a mascot, and he was never intended to be the mascot. We were never the Illinois Fighting Chief Illiniweks. We are the Fighting Illini and always have been.

  • your a fucking retard

  • WOW! Tears are in my eyes!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this and adding the LONE RANGER to it as the ending! Being an alumni member of the MARCHING ILLINI I shall never forget the great times and how proud I was to have belonged!! Thank you!!!

  • Lucky for USC, the Rose Bowl wasn't a spelling bee. Illinois totally would have won that.

  • illinois' band was better than usc's anyway though illinois didn't win the rosebowl.

  • I was here to get pumped up for the 2008 Rosebowl. Was at Illinois when Butkus and Grabowski and the Illi won at Pasadina back in 1964. GO ILLINI!!!!

  • i was just there for a marching competition

  • CHIEEEEEEEEEEFFFFFFFFFF

  • marching illini Kick Arse

  • Hail to the ORANGE Hail to the BLUE Hail to THE CHIEF; CHIEF, yesterday, today, FOREVER!!!

  • i was their!!!!!!!!! against Indiana -.-

its sad they made a last second fieldgoal so we lost to the lossiers This current chief is from Galesburg illinois my grandparents live there :D

  • Heather Goetsch and Sam Temple!!!! Graduates of Williamsville high school...wOOt

  • HAIL TO THE CHIEF !!!!

  • The Chief is such a badass! I miss him so much!

  • it was a sad day that the board of trustee's head decided to prove their inability to lead our great university. Im glad to see that the student senate is attempting some steps to prevent idiocy like this in the future. the Chief will live on forever.

  • Amazing! Who knew this would be Chief's last homecoming?! I noticed the sigma pi letters in one of the photos. I was a Phi Sig, my husband is a Triangle. I cried the day when they tore your old house down, it happened over the summer in 1997 I believe. Glad to know your chapter is still up and running, in Urbana. Triangle, SigmaPi, and PhiSigmaSigma chapters are all the oldest existing chapters of their respective fraternities--funny how they used to be all on the same corner of the universe!
