  • god i love the old g.e aircrafts lol :P

  • Nothing says "Western Stupidity" more than a flock of car alarms going off. I can understand this somewhat, but ever go to a large factory parking lot on a windy day? Same results. Amazing how something can be laughable and pathetic at the same time...

  • was that a black jack I saw before this one took off?

  • It's a shame, literarally that they can't even fly this thing anymore. What the hell is wrong with the world today?

  • It's hardly 'all the cars'.

  • is that a beluga at 0:42 ?

  • @VegaVids Airbus Skylink Super Guppy.

  • @Wonkabar007 Is this the cold war jets day

  • @IrritatedBear Yes.

  • amazing video, this is XS904 isn't it?

  • I bet standing there you can feel your rib cage shake, your trousers flapping and your ears bleeding from the immense bass from the shockwaves

  • Why doesn't he take off?

  • @Salamanamanjaro

Because the CAA says the Lightning is too dangerous to be flown by a civilian!

  • @ToonandBBfan Then why don't they have an ex-military pilot fly it?

  • @Salamanamanjaro

I think the CAA doesnt want an aircraft like the Lightning in the hands of anyone non military. Ex-military pilot or not!

I agree it stinks that we cant have the pleasure of seeing this plane soar across the sky

  • It's sad how at one point in american history the soviets built junk that could outperform our aircraft

  • @skibdattles What are you on about? This isn't soviet it is British (English Electric Lightning - The clue is in the name) and believe me the Lightnings were not junk, they could outperform anything in the skies when in active service and with updated avionics, even today they'd give a good account of themselves. The only downside was that they did like their drink.. ;)

  • @sgtgrash you're absolutely correct, I forgot about the MiG-21's identical twin.

  • @skibdattles Directly from the front there are some similarities admittedly as long as you remember to put the MIG 21 into a photocopier and set enlarge to 120% first. Wing planform is entirely different, the MIG 21 having a delta wing whereas the Lightning had a steeply swept back wing. As for performance and combat capabilities, the Lightning would eat the MIG for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper. The Lightning could go from brake release to 36,000 feet in less than 3 mins btw :)

  • i so want him to pull back on the stick, go and find the little shits that tell them that they cant the lightning and drop a bomb straight down their f---ing chimney.

  • I remember these doing that at Air Shows. The noise, the noise. Great stuff.

  • I saw two of these competing at fast take-off in Malta in 1968 at Luqa against two RAF Phantoms and two USAF phantoms, the USAF Phantoms were first off the ground followed by the RAF then the Lightning went straight up between them the comment from the USAF pilot was what the F**** was that I want one.

  • @T5058932 That would have made an epic YouTube video. Makes me wonder how many great video clips from years gone by, are sitting in boxes gathering dust in cellars and lofts never to be seen on the internet.

  • @Wonkabar007 I think the lightning still holds the record for the fastest climb to 50,000ft

  • I saw Concorde do the same thing at East Midlands Airport in 1991. After my ears recovered, all I could hear was car alarms and babys crying LOL

  • That Dennis Brooks, such a trouble maker !

  • Fly baby fly.

  • Banned from flying in uk airspace because she's too loud. Fucking pathetic law.

  • @ 00:43 " asshole " LOLZZZ . . XD

  • What a fantastic aircraft :D

  • Is that at Cranfield airport? I know they used to have an EEL there. They did the occasional ground run in it.

  • @ComedicInstincts This was filmed a Bruntingthorpe.

  • No you dont set off car alarms with a russian jet you set off car alarms with a American F-22 raptor at the speed of sound.

  • This was well worth the long drive, just to see the look on my mother's face as it blasted down the runway!

  • Retired before it's time. What a wonderful aircraft.

  • I wonder if anyone took advantage of the confusion when the alarms were going off and decided to steal a car without anyone noticing.

  • @trydownloadingthis

    Of course not.

    Behave yourself.

That is not the British way.

  • are there any plans to get them airworthy ?

  • @blahblah48856 The authorities won't allow them to fly, they say they are too complex for privateers to operate.

  • @Wonkabar007 And the Vulcan isn't! What is it with the CAA?

  • @Wonkabar007 ...when are you brits gunna stop letting pussy's run your govt?..wait,..im from the states,..and we are worse,..nevermind,..carry on.

  • @wilatemodel

G'day.I SO relate to your statement about 'pussy's' running your countries.

Australia hase had a GENUINE PUSSY ruining Oz for more than a year now, and she's done monumental C.NT of a job!.

If you want to come and live here, go to Indonesia, pay $12,000 to a people smuggler, do a short boat trip to Christmas Island, you will be quickly 'processed', and you will receive Welfare, Subsidised housing, (ahead of genuine refugees), you don't have to work, WE PAY!.

    Nice, eh?.

  • @twinstu50

One last bit. I was doing my R.A.A.F. rookies at Edinburgh, South Australia in 1971, and a bunch of Pommies and their aeroplanes visited, a couple of Lightnings, one Vulcan, and some other bits and pieces.

    The Vulcan was AWESOME!.

BUT. Mate, when the Lightnings did their bit, they were Bloody Awesome.

    And LOUD!!.

Until the the Harrier, I have never heard a louder jet fighter during take-off.

The all three abovementioned aeroplanes are still Very Nice Pieces of Kit.

  • @twinstu50 yup and a sad reminder of when britain was great

  • @twinstu50 ..the Mexicans get here a lot cheaper than that,..you guys are lucky your a island,..the mexicans just walk in..

  • @wilatemodel

    True.

    To:, Wonkabar007.

My comment that introduced a Political aspect to your forum, is, of course, unacceptable.

    I do apologise.

Here, you spoke of Aeroplanes, (at the age of 6 years, I saw my first one, I never recovered).

Such is the beauty and fascination of Aeroplanes and flying.

Once bitten, there is no antidote.

    By choice.

  • @Wonkabar007 there is a privately owned Lightning anlong with a hunter and a bucaneer in South Africa! Its a two seat version and for a large amount of money (and if your fit) you can be taken to the edge of Earths atmosphere.. i know its costly but boy what an experience!!!!

  • @Wonkabar007

    Hmmm. Too complex for privateers?...

Quick!, someone ring up Richard Branson and tell him that going into space is too complex for a privateer.

  • @Wonkabar007 so lame.

  • @Wonkabar007

Also one of the worst Aircraft ever designed past 50 years.

    Look similar to MIG21s.

  • @TheNotoriousJesus Oh....and what technical expertise do you base that peal of wisdom on my friend.

  • @timber733

It was simply a terrible jet design. Ever heard the terrors when pilots ejected from it. It was a terrible design, nice plane but definitely not as safe as others during its time. Iv heard this from few POs.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheNotoriousJesus the fastest airframe ever operated by the RAF and the pilots loved it. The only issue was the instrument panel design which could in some cases kneecap tall pilots on ejection. Oh, and the range, which is why many were fitted with overwing tanks. Apart from that, in its day it could outclimb and outmanoeuvre anything the USAF or other NATO nations put up against it.

  • @Wonkabar007 It isn't that... its that they're bloody quick and not a lot can catch them!

  • @Wonkabar007 The longer that's the case, the more true that will be because the expertise needed to maintain them will slowly die. Just like the majority of our old industries and skills.

  • @Wonkabar007 The Americans are trying to get one up, they're allowed top do that sort of thing, shame we cant in Britain :(

  • @blahblah48856

No, we have no plans for flight

  • @blahblah48856 As the earlier reply, not in the UK, but there is a group in the US who are currently rebuilding a Lightning to airworthy condition. There are 3 airworthy Lightnings for sale in South Africa at the moment, the ex Thunder City airframes, if you have just won the lottery...

  • And people call the A-10 ugly?!?!?!

  • My Wife (She who I utterly adore :D), and I were bicycling along the Moselle Valley, 'bout 7 years ago, - I heard jets.

I crash-stopped, checked my two O'clock high, and saw something that NO Australian MIGHT never see in Australia.

    Two A-10's.

They cut, from two to ten, RIGID!, NOT A WAVER OF WINGS.

    NOT A BOUNCE.

    NOT A WOBBLE.

They 'Scissored', levelled out, did a wing 'waggle', one broke left, one broke right,- GONE!.

  • @mokle999 both are kind of ugly but in a im gonna rip your head off and shit in the hole kinda way

  • I love this plane!!!!!!

  • Unfortunately, no more Lightnings or Buccaneers in SA! Dave Stock was killed in the T5 at Bredasdorp in November 2009 all over but great memories!

  • do what they did with the vulcan, PUT ONE OF THEM BACK IN THE AIR!!

  • Comment removed

  • @killerbeez95

Better still 'you' buy one ,(theres 3 for sale in the SA) you fund it all, get hold of all the zero timed spares you will need, manage the project with the CAA and BAE, and let me know how you get on, ok.

We are fine as we are thanks.

  • wat plane is this??

  • @Alpha8264

English Electric F6 Lightning XS904, we have two of them, the other being F6 XR728

  • @320psi

    thxs

  • shame about the flying in SA ending as one of the planes tail id's was BEX....just needed 4k for the trip and flight :-)

  • Back in the 70's when I was about 8 I saw one of these at an air show it came from behind on full reheat and then did a full vertical climb in front of me probably the most impressive thing I have ever seen or heard fantastic.... now you have to spend thousands and go to south Africa to get that fix....But you do get to fly in it.

  • @bexnomad I think the flying in SA is finished now, I heard they were selling all the planes :(

  • @Wonkabar007 How much can a plane worth O.o?

  • @Wonkabar007 Sorry only just read this..... hope its not true, ive almost got enough lol

  • @Wonkabar007 Finished last year. I heard an american civvie air force has a couple flying. The R.A.F knew it was a great craft and still is. Even by todays standards. And for it to still be the only all-British Mach 2 fighter aircraft just shows our governments make crap decisions in not keeping her up to date

  • @bexnomad Some 50 years ago low level flying was not restricted to the same speeds as now. I was in the Air Cadets and I seen a Lightning flying at low level at some 700 MPH. The shock waves were building up on the wings, this was at some 200 feet of so above ground. Then it shot up vertical, what a sight that was, I will never forget the power it had

  • my all time fave aircraft..i remember sitting in the fields during the summer watching these beautys taking off...early 80s when i was at school..memories

  • @t1000eg Much more fun than doing homework LOL.

  • will she ever back where she belongs one day?

  • My dad used to work on those for the RAF and then for Airworks in Oman... Stunning piece of kit, still remember seeing one do the 'Tail Stand' at Finningley when I was a kid, IIRC it was the only aircraft capable of doing that, not sure if any of the new ones can even do it now...

  • get a large jet engine, strap afew control surfaces and a saddle...BOOM! you have a lighning!

  • That's why it's called the frighting.

  • Just after watching this I over heard some lightning ground crew who were in the crowd speaking about the pilot for that day, didn't catch his name but they were saying he wanted to do this fast taxi as it would possibly be the last one he would be able to do due to a long term illness

  • @treved15 Haha me too. Id have to say my favourite was the Victor!

  • Worked at Warton when they were being test flown. One decided to do a vertical climb with full reheat above the toilets I was in. Three of us came out dragging our pants up in a big hurry thinking something had crashed on the building. Sadly they could not outturn or go faster than a missile. But the first British plane to exceed 1000 mph.

  • @treved15 Me too. Awesome wasn't it?

  • the "one man, twin fan all, aluminium, manned missile"

  • Stil a great aircraft.

    Funny video.

  • Comment removed

  • Where and when was that? LOL at all the car alarms. Also I think I spot a Rover 800 there - I had one and it was fantastic, getting a rare car now.

  • @ash7990 Bruntingthorpe cold war jet show, couple of years ago.

  • it looks pregnant!

  • @Arty288 Thats all the fire in its belly.

  • @Wonkabar007 touche!

  • saw one of these break the sound barrier going vertical at Biggin Hill Aerodrome in the 60"s

  • I was there sadly missed xh558's take off though :(

  • Good way to piss the neighbourhood

  • Was that a MIG.. ????

  • @ad1665 English Electric Lightning with 2 Rolls Royce Avon engines

  • @TBM3EAvenger cheerz mate very nice isnt it

  • @ad1665

No, a Frightening. Most British fighter ever! ^_^

  • perfect time to steal a car lol

  • I want to see an XB-70 Valkyrie do this.

  • Ahh the lightning, Still the fastest jet ever to have served in the Royal Air force.

  • Amazing launch, it squats down like a high power, rear wheel drive car.

  • LOL, I heard a Canadian F-18 pilot did that once, the TV show was called Jetsteam

  • One of the best looking jet aircraft ever and that's coming from an American across the pond. Would love to see one of these race an F14, two of the best interceptors ever made.

  • @Corvidae51 The lightning would go into a early lead, but run out of fuel quickly.

  • @Wonkabar007 Have to agree. The Lightning could probably out accelerate any aircraft ever built, but sadly, would run out of fuel too soon.

  • @Wonkabar007 For me, these aircraft are like english mig-15's, but better overall.

  • @Wonkabar007 Mm... but in the 1985 NATO fighter trials against Concorde (to prove capability against the Soviet Tu-160 Blackjack) the F-14 could not make the intercept. Nor could the F-15 or F-16. No NATO fighter could. Except for, what was it now, I forget, it'll come to me in a minute... Oh yeah. The Lightning.

  • @TheMarkXIV

    Cheeky devil!.

  • @Corvidae51 Lightnings used to practice intercepts on the Concorde - I doubt the F14 would even bother.

  • @Corvidae51

f14s are mean as hell :)

ba offered concorde up as a target with mirage f14 f15 f16 and a lightning the only thing that caught the concorde on a stern intercept was the frightning all the others failed. the same lighting intercepted a u2 by diving on it from 88,000 feet!!! it had and still has absolutely blistering performance!

  • @eatthisvr6 An old friend of mine was a U2 Pilot and was intercepted by 2 Lightnings at over 80,000 feet, said it scared the hell out of him as he was used to being alone up there lol, still remember very well the look on his face when he was telling me, awesome aircraft!

  • @Corvidae51 the f14 is a fantastic looking plane mean as hell and bloody fast too but trust me on this a lightning would win a drag race /climb race

  • its funny cause everybody there probably reached for there keys

  • EE stands for Extreme Ecology

  • AMAZING INTERCEPTOR

  • i fix these types of aircraft for a living

  • The Lightning still the fastest aircraft to enter RAF Service.

  • Excellent news on Sunday 29th May the Lightning will be fast taxi running, and the Vulcan will know takeoff for the crowd to see at Bruntingthorpe.

  • @Wonkabar007 do you know if this will stay for Waddington air show? The vulcan last year only did a fly over, so if it does come then it should do a runway start!

  • @Wonkabar007 My dad was working there.

  • I was told by a non reliable source that the Lightning had gone tech but thats not the case. I have been to the Open Days at Bruntingthorpe on a regular basis being just down the road from me and I can tell those that have not experienced it, the Lightning is ear splittingly loud!! It has always been the highlight of the days for me.......apart from the weekend the Victor decided it wanted a little more than a taxi run and departed from the runway and got airbourne for a bit. Classic balls up!!

  • Used to live at RAF Binbrook home of 5 and 11 sqd we have had dishes windows and doors rattled and broken Lightnings and the Vulcans from Waddington nothing quite like it, All this namby pamby health and safety making weapons of war quieter so as not to wake the neighbours. You haven't lived till you've heard Alert 5 fighters going of in the middle of the night or day

  • @WolfsBlood66 The cold war had some fantastic sounds, I miss it.

  • That sounds ridiculously loud :D

How does it compare to the Eurofighter (which is the loudest I have heard personally)?

  • @demolition09 The Lightning is louder. on the 29th of May 2011 the Bruntingthorpe aircraft museum is doing another day fast taxi runs, Its a great day out.

  • pmsl nice one!!

  • Perfect opportunity for a car thief

  • now THEY were fun to watch and listen too.... deaf for 3 days after. :-)

    those were the days lol.....

  • Rattled my teeth and made my hair stand on end. Great.

  • that looks bleeding rapid even from a standstill!!

  • @eatthisvr6 apparantly 0-200 mph took 12 seconds!!!

    a veyron takes 20 lol

  • A supersonic shockwave would trump that. Especially from something that wasnt designed to mask the shock.

  • We used to call the tail insignia "the fighting cocks", a little cheerier than the other (Canadian based squardon), maple leaf design, happy daze...................TMFW

  • No not an airbus, It is a Handley Page Victor

  • LOL ;) keep it up

  • the french test pilot who was evaluating the lightning took off using afterburner after being told not to . he rotated and only got the gear up at 15K . Got to love the 30 min flight time at full power too lol

  • @edmundscycles 30 minutes? i think it was actually 9 minutes at full chat lol

  • What camera is this shot with ???

  • @RubenCraninx Sony HDR SR10e but I had it filming to the memory card not the hard drive, because when there is alot of noise the hard drive malfunctions and stops recording, so on those occations use the memory card instead.

  • @Wonkabar007 I see you have the same camera as me. Yes i have got the same problems to on the departure days of the RIAT:P

  • where was this?

  • hahaha brilliant. love the power of that beauty! very good camera work on all your videos!

  • is this bruntingthorpe

  • @bobsurgranny Yes, one of the high speed taxi run open days they do.

  • @Wonkabar007 is that an airbus in the distance at 0:46 ?

great vid by the way and i have subbed

  • Brill. I was watching it there yesterday too!

  • That must be awesome.

I know that one Avon without afterburner can rock the world.

Two of them, at full power, spitting fire in afterburner... Oh, I wish I could see that!

  • LOL
