  • lololol 'if he doesnt play queen to g5 he wasnt setting a trap he was just a completely terrible chess player

  • this is what i've noticed

    1.) Nxc2+! is better than Bc5

2.) after Kd8... Ng4! is the correct move for white... Bxg8 is only good for white if Black played Ke7 instead of Kd8...

Anyway, this is just my observation....

  • "If he doesn't play Qg5 he wasn't setting a trap, he was just a completely terrible chess player and you should win easy anyways." hahahah

  • after black move Kd8. white move Ng4... and where is the trap????

  • i just raped some guy with this trap, cheers :)

  • 1:25 what he says is kinda pathetic since u allready took on e5 so ur the terrible player nomatter what he plays after that

  • If you're one of those players who gets down in material early, and falls into traps easily...

  • What if white doesnt move his knight to F7 but does rook g1 instead?! I played against the Deep fritz software(who made the g1 move) and lost (however he didnt fall for the trap completly, took my knight instead of the pawn).

  • Ne5 > Ng4

    D7 > D5

    H2>H4

    (Not sure here maybe) QG5>G6

    NG4>NE5

    ....

  • @bradleytough Just realised wouldnt work

    Qg6>Qe5 (check)

  • @bradleytough *e4

  • In the second line after Nxh8 if be2, then Nxc2, Kc1 and Qh8 mate. If QxN then you lose your Queen.

  • what if the move order goes like this: 1.e4e5

    2.Nf3Nc6

    3.Bc4Nd4

    4.Nxe5Qg5

    5.Nxf7Qxg2

    6.d3

White just creates an escape space for himself

  • even after nxe5 qg5. bxf7, white is clearly winning from this point. Seems like this trap will only work if the white player is greedy or just really blind

  • i played this trap haha it´s so nice if players haven´t already seen it haha love it!

  • hi,after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.bc4 Nd4 4.Ne5 Qg5 5.Bxf7 Kd8 6.Instead of 0-0,he can move Ng4???Because of castling he also lost his Knight in e5????

  • Today, I lost to the trap when I took his pawn in the beginning. To be honest, I thought he was an idiot when he moved the knight. :) Was checkmated in 7 moves!

  • @HarryPotterDude1000 nice story braw

  • HOLY ShIT THIS IS REALLY GOOD

  • I thought the name was Black Kostic trap

  • At 3:24 when you say that moving your knight to f3 isn't checkmate, it is in 2 isn't it?

The king has to move to f1 (the bishop can't take because it's pinned by the queen). The queen can then move to h1 and that's checkmate.

  • A neat counter-trap if you will at 4:30, instead of playing Bxg8, white can play b3, aiming to play Bb2 and put pressure on the knight and queen. If black isn't careful and thinks he can play Qxe4, white has Re1 and black's queen is lost. Moving off the e file allows Re8#.

  • awesome trap!

  • taking pawn with bishop followd by Kg4

    im confused abt this help

  • taking pawn with bishop followd by Kg4

  • Damn..... i wish i watched this earlier =/

  • At 3:48 cant white bring the knight to g4 to block the queens attack, at the same time successfully taking the pawn? if pawn pushes h5 the knight can just retreat to e3 also protecting g2. I'd love a response thanks.

  • I have a question here.. How about instead of taking that poisonous pawn on e5, White gives a Bishop sacrifice by taking the pawn on f7? Continued with Nxe5+ and because of Black's King is opened from attacks, White will do its Quenn check manouver with the combination of the Knight.. How about it, Kevin?

  • @669881 that was my first thought in that position too. As black I would like to try Kxf7 and Ke6. White is going to have some pressure for a while but I think it is defendable.

  • @669881 yes I'm curious about that too as it looks quite dangerous. I'm wondering if the best continuation for black is Kxe7 followed by Ke6?

  • I disagree w/ Black's Bc5 move. I prefer Nxc2 which leaves white with only 2 options, take the knight with the queen and lose the queen or move Kf1 and gte mated by Qh1...

  • I think we need a government funded program for emotional counselling for people who get caught in this trap.

  • tomorrow will be my tournament .. wish me luck =D

  • @jackzvideos which move? Blacks ...Nd4(!?) ?

  • just wondering, is there anything wrong with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nd4 4.Nxe5 Qg5 6.Bxf7+ Kd8

    and then 7. Ng4?

Black would probably follow up wiht 7.. d5 or d6 then white could do 8. h3

  • In the 6. Nxh8 variation, why not 8. ... Nxc2+? Either loses the queen or loses to mate with 9. Kf1 Qh1#.

And for the record, this trap is also known as The Costage.

  • Great video as always! Congrats, you're really helping.

    But i think that bringing your bishop to d5 after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nd4 4.Nxe5 Qg5 6.Nxf7 Qxg2 7.Nxh8 Qxh1+ 8.Bf1 Qxe4+ 9.Be2 ... is not a good idea at all.

    Much more better is 9. ... Nxc2+!! because if 10.Qxc2 Qxc2! wining the queen. And if 9. ... Kf1?? Qh1 mate

    Be seeing you!

  • @piouiyutyrterzea1 while i agree that Nxc2 does win material, i think that Bd5 is not only a good idea, but wins the game much faster. Don't get me wrong, both moves are fine and black will win, but I think Bd5 is the better move.

  • @thechesswebsite how is Bd5 a better move wen v can win either queen or the game if v play Nxc2

  • @thechesswebsite first of all, the move is Bc5 not Bd5. Second of all, though it's a solid move, it's not nearly as powerful as winning a Queen for a knight - there is no forced mate there, so you're just wrong, Bc5 doesn't win the game faster at all. Against any serious tournament player, white would resign on the spot, so it is actually the more practical move to make and for all intents and purposes, "wins the game much faster."

  • @joe1234567890i hey joe i would recommend to be more polite,

    have a nice day

  • @TheSFSkinny Skinny, I fail to see how I was being disrespectful at all. I was simply clarifying an objection to one of thechesswebsite's claims. Maybe it's just that I don't view a statement such as "you're wrong" as impolite, but honestly I was just stating the facts as I saw it. If you would be so kind to point out exactly where you thought my language was harsh, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

  • @joe1234567890i well its actually not my job. but your parent´s to teach you how to behave yourself but ok, i will explain it to you:First of all you could have said "thank you for the video" or something similar, but no you just started off criticising the video. You just pointed out a minor mistake Kevin made.

  • @joe1234567890i Then you went on claiming to have found a much better move and didn´t even explain it properly. Instead of saying "so you're just wrong" you could´ve used a more polite phrase.

  • Comment removed

  • @thechesswebsite

How should it win faster? After Nxc2 White should resign instantly, he loses the Queen. Thats much faster than a nice attack move.

  • @piouiyutyrterzea1 yes to me this is definitely the best move...what is better than winning the queen or checkmate?

  • all you guys saying "omg i won with the trap awesome" should be careful. It is bad to play for traps. Its good to know them to avoid falling for them. For every game you win with a good trap, you lose 10 when the opponent doesn't fall for it.PLaying for traps its good at the beginner level, but later on opponents don't fall for this.

  • after Bxf7+ Ke7 is way better than Kd8, the king attacks the bishop if the knight moves. There is no way to save yourself as white if you fall for this trap.

  • There is a flaw in this trap. see this

    1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nd4 4. Nxe5 Qg5 5. Ng4

After white plays Ng4, black can do nothing more.

  • @253able wrong, after d5!, both the bishop and and the knight are attacked. As a matter of fact, assuming that black makes no blunders, the game is won for black. White cannot save himself, no matter what.

  • @253able That move fails to 5. ... d5 with a discovered attack on the knight.

  • This is not the fried liver attack!!!!!!!

  • this is also called the fried liver trap

  • Its surprising to hear some of the more advanced players like its not really known and more surprised that very strong players have fallen to one of the most famous traps.. having said that - someone fell to my er -forget what its called, but game went something like: 1.e4 e4 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.Bc4 d6 4.Nf3 Bg4 5.Nxe5 Bxd1 6.Bxf7+ Ke7 and Nd5 is mate - lots of variations this but the important thing is black cant have played Nf3. Plan on watching the rest of the videos, excited to have found your chan!

  • No serious chessplayer goes Nd4. After c3 White has a good version of a Ruy.

  • @21airsoftgod but c4 is much harder to play you need much more accurate moves and you need to be good positional player e4 is actually easier i think.,...brute force can win against positionally strong player

  • But wait, if after Bxf7+, the king moves to d8, why not move ur knight tog4, and if they threaten it, to e3 after? I know you castle after Ke7, but not Kd8

  • hey thx for video.. it helped me a lot......

@3:28 u cn put ur knight to C2 and win queen easily..

  • hey thx for the video..it help me a lot....

@3:28 you cn put your knight at c2 and win queen easily..... :D

  • I played this game when I was 1284 in the first round against a 1551 smart young player and won it in 7 moves with mate. After that, players came around and someone said, "What? Are you serious?" They all couldn't believe it. I bought a small, used book called, "Chess traps and strategems". That helped alot for me before internet came.

  • Waitzkin versus Arnett, Josh talks about this in the Chessmaster tutorial

  • hey man this is an awesome video. really nice trap and good explanation but i do have a question. pls answer as i really want to know what to do. you know at 3:30, when u bring the bishop down? how do u continue the attack? thanks in advance :D

  • what happens if at 2.06, you move rook a g1, QXR +, then Bfi, after that, black dont have another option, then white NxR, I think is a good variation too and you are even in material

  • hey guys, you can learn more variations from this game in APRENDER AJEDREZ CELADAS 1 is in spanish, but you can understand, hey kranya75 you can see what happens if N moves to g4 at 1.29

  • hey LuKa remember K is for KING and N is for knight, you right, if N take c2 then he forced the queen to take N and black Q take white Q..very good, I all ready explain this move in the bottom...03.24.. good job

  • at 1.29 if you move white knight to g4, then black move pawn to d5 attacking white bishop at the same time attacking the knight in g4 with the black bishop in c8, and you can win a piece. is a good move too..sorry for my english...

  • Waht happens if knight moves to g4 at 1:29

  • in 03:24 why you didnt played Kc2? then he is forced to take that knight with his qouin

  • Awesome,I beat 5 players straights with this,thanks alot.

  • As a visual learner I would be interested in the spelling of some of the moves you mention. Other than that I enjoy your videos.

    cheers

    dave

  • I've said it before but you're a really good teacher.

  • IN 3:23 Nxc2 is check, if QxN then black QxQ , if not, Ke1-kf1 then Qe4-Qh1 is checkmate........NICE CHECK MATE

  • I've hit the subscribe button after hearing this @1:25

  • Hey Kevin, at 1:25, after Qg5, wouldn't the best move for white be Ng4 since the queen protects it? Because after h5, then comes Ne3 protecting that pawn, right?White is ahead by 1 point. Please respond. I would greatly appreciate it.

  • i think best move would be knight to g4 after queen moves to g5, then castle for white

  • At 1:25, after Qg5, would white still be ahead in material if he just played Ng4, with the white queen protecting it? After Ng4, for example, h5, and then white moves his knight to e3 defending the g2 pawn, while being ahead one point.

  • OMFG, the AI in my chess game owned me wif this trap!!!! 0.O

  • after seeing this video and heard the line "so be sure, be sure if you do see this, you don't fall for this trap", the inventor of this trap screams and yells: "No!!!! I can't beat anybody now because my best move is well known by everyone!"

  • Great trap, good explanation. Thank you for this.

  • At 3:23 instead of moving the bishop to c5, it would be best to move the knight to c2 thereby checking the king, and forking the bishop, if he moves the king its checkmate, if he captures with queen, you win his queen.

  • at 4:16 why can't white play Kg4 and maintain its material advantage?

  • Great trap!

  • Wouldnot it be better at 3:23 to play Nc2 ?

    Nc2 check

    Two options

first QxNc2 then we can respond with BQxWQ c2

second Kf1 then we can respond with Qh1 mate

    right?

  • @MRT2103 ya i was about to comment on that i dont know why he didnt mention it

  • at 3:23 black should instead move Nc2 forcing white to lose the queen, otherwise Kf1 and Qh1 check mate

  • when white falls for the first part of the trap and takes the e-pawn, black moves the queen to g5. i thought that white still hass the possibility of moving his knight to g4 and after pawn to h5, he can move the knight to e3 also protecting the g2 pawn. I think that both players are then quite equal. White has moved his knight 4 times in the opening, and black has an early active queen but hasn't developed a lot of his minor pieces, so personally i wouldn't recommend playing this.

  • @Creapieo That is exactly what I meant, but worded differently. Thanks for the reasonable explanation. I hope Kevin replies to our comments.

  • this is called backburn gambit, yes? btw ur traps rock......... oh and theres this 27 move # of which i think 7 r forced....maybe upload a vid on that? my teacher showed me that... oh and btw how i subscribe to you?? lol i was rated 1613, now am prob worth 800......havent practiced for along time...

  • @koma1997 should be subscribe button right above the video.

  • @koma1997 white knight to c3 will prevent checkmate

  • @koma1997 Yes, the Blackburne shilling or gambit. The story is that this was first played by some person in some bar/pub/inn and would play people for a shilling - which is an old English coin. Not sure how accurate that story is. This isn't the type of trap i would play in any tournament unless you are ok with the risk of a bad game or with losing.

  • @e4knightf3 why would you consider this a bad move? It seems all right with me...

  • Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

I had a USCF rated chess tournament this weekend.. I tried this against a 1716 rated player.. It exactly worked and opponent resigned after 9th move... Thanks for the traps :)

  • @19FENERBAHCE7 that is so awesome. Nothing better than throwing a trap at a good player in a tournament and have them fall right into it, the whole time you are fully knowledgeable about the different variations and how to crush them every step of the way. Keep it up and keep me posted with ur success. I love hearing stories like this.

  • @thechesswebsite hey man im wondering whats a really good book or something to buy that will get my chess game up realllyy high. I really want to start getting into chess again. likw 2 months ago i was playing everyday and my blitz chess rating (3 min) is like 950-100. Right now i been doing real bad it its 904. When im white is the starting that u use in this video (itilian or w/e). Ive beaten a player (when doing games 3 days a move) 1400-1500 rating. Ive been playing for 5 months mybe 6-7

  • Lol...this is also known as the "Oh my god!" Trap. Because for it to have full affect your supposed to say something with agonizing remorse to make white think you have just blundered the e5 pawn. This of course is highly unethical and I dont recommend anyone to do this.

  • i cannot solve medium puzzle 1 on thechesswebsite Help!

  • @RoyalDevil3 could have just emailed :)

anyway, first get queen out of the way Qb8, and then Ne5, mate in 1 after that.

  • @thechesswebsite whats your email?

  • @thechesswebsite Thanks for replying!

  • knight to c2 at 3:39 could lead to cheack mate

  • @MrMarson123456

I saw this move too, was going to comment about it but read yours. Only move is king to f1 then Qh1 is mate.

  • he could capture on c2 with his queen (losing his queen) but at least avoid mate for time being.

  • thanks !

  • Thanks so much for these videos you put up.really well explained and easy to grasp.Great value. Those chess dvds usually cost a fortune!

  • Nice video, when I encounter this trap I prefer to lose my knight and trade in my white bishop in order to unleash a major counter attack :)

  • nice trap and vid. it's funny how you say "down in material".. like ma "tea" real, lol

  • im soo gunna use this

  • I like your videos!

  • i remember this trap

    first trap that i learned

  • well done !!

  • Joshua Waitzkin lost his first national because of this trap

  • @alaadx interesting fact of the day that I did not know. thanks!

  • @alaadx I beat the best player of my school with this trap :D

  • i playd the tramp for 1 years a go in fast game... but it only 1000players take the pown...

  • awesome ty

  • what if instead of playing Bc5 black plays Nxc2+? White must either lose his queen for the knight or play Kf1 after which Qh1 is mate.

  • kool

  • Comment removed

  • Well two quick things you to think about.

    1. I said Nf3 is not mate and it's not. In the previous example Nf3 was ++ and in this example it's not, it's just check, big difference.

    2. After Nf3 black can't play Qh1 because his queen is blocked by his knight.

Not sure if you even saw this but just be careful.

  • @thechesswebsite oh.. sorry i totally missed that block :S but anyways this is a great trap that most beginners tend to fall for.

  • Yup, my bad! Which is why I removed the question.

  • I love this trap, and it is funny every time that i try to initiate one of the openings/ traps it never happens the way i plan lol

  • Fantastic vid! Fav'd!

  • beautiful!!! nice thnx!!!!

  • thx!! i will try to use this trap in the future!

  • Ah, the Blackburn Gambit. I love it, one of the best traps I ever pulled off (next to the Legal Trap). Good video, I'm looking forward to the next one.

Any chance we can get a Blackmair-Diemer gambit next?

  • very nice

  • AHHH this is the same trap i fell for haha only if this video was posted some odd days ago hahaha but everytime i see that i always take the knight havnt really considered the castle but i might play that next time

  • Excellent, well spoken. Your explanation flows, no ums and ahhh or you knows.

Make some videos of your actual games too! That would be appreciated.

  • what about 5. Kg4 blocking the black queen while protecting the knight with the white queen?

  • @tigiris2257 great question! Black should play d5! This attacks the bishop on c4 and double attacks the knight on g4. White also has to be careful in exchanges because knight can play Nxc2 if the queen is no longer protecting that square.

    Hope this helps.

  • thx

  • kudos

  • You have no idea how excited I was to see that you had put another vid on! Good vid!!!

  • Well done and explained video as usual.

  • @SohnoJam Thanks for kind words !

  • Thank you for making so many awesome videos! There's a good chance I've watched them all. Might have missed a few though... Anyway, hope you make more videos this good.

  • Great vid :)
