Not many people on the planet in the last thousand years and longer haven't heard of him. Julius Caesar, for whom July is named, and Augustus Caesar, for whom August is named, would also be up there, as would Mohammed and Confucius.

Doubtless the gospel writers skewed their stories to make them conform to various myths and Jewish prophecies -- they were trying to sell their story of him as the "Christ" or messiah. That doesn't negate the physical existence of Jesus; that someone is "James the brother of Jesus" certainly suggests that there were both a James and a Jesus.

Frankly, few people were literate, and there was no civil service as there is today. There weren't birth or death certificates. Clearly many people met Jesus in person; they're documented in Acts and the various letters of the New Testament, as well as the gospels.

Not to mention that when you state Josephus as the historian, he's also been tampered with by the church because of his writings on Jesus. @Improbable0possible There aren't Polaroids of him calming the waters -- it was 2,000 years ago. The Romans counted people and then collected taxes based on the count. They didn't keep individual records of people. Josephus wasn't a Christian, yet was aware of and recorded Jesus -- sorry, that's the best evidence that can be offered. I suppose you also don't believe in William Wallace or Robert the Bruce, as accounts of them have been amplified.

William Wallace and Robert Bruce exist, they have historical evidence through weapons, through records, through reports, through eye witness accounts through history, through us having his body, through us having the castles he resided in. Well yes, because the Gospels are the main reason people believe Jesus existed, if we take this out of the equation then they have little reason for that belief.
