@bluecanary487 If you're really not racist then you won't mind that your son chooses to marry an Asian. So, whether or not your son wants to marry an Asian, then that'll be his choice. Its not you that's going to marry an Asian.
@oowen2784 Yeah, read the entire comment before replying because the second sentance clearly indicates that I was calling the mom in the movie a racist.
@bluecanary487 not true....many times ive said im not a racist but because i dont agree with certain aspects of organised religion including islam i have had the racist card thrown at me....people mix the two and its very annoying.....
This novel turned movie is a stereotyping worthless piece if shit, Amy Tan is a self-loathing, white cock sucking sellout. She's such a disgrace to her parents and all the Chinese people. It's about White gentlemen rescuing China Dolls from their miserable existence shadowed by their Evil Asian Male counterparts. It's a perfect example of how American mainstream media is racist towards Asians.
If you're ignorant to Asian culture in general, don't bother with this, as you'll be largely misguided.
Now,imagine if the 2 young couple was a white girl & her black boyfriend. It would be the father talking to her black boyfriend and say something like..."how unpopular the American civil war was"...
The boyfriend would say back..."I wasn't a slave back ahundred-fourty years ago,I'm an AMERICAN"...
"I'm not Vietnamese. I'm American." This gets so misunderstood by people of another race when they see Asians that were born in the U.S.A. The automatically assume ALL Asians are from Asia. In fact almost all Americans lineage are foreigners. Read history books people!
Stupid to put all your hope in a feather....No its blowing away in the wind! Oh no what should I do everything I care about is gone! ....Well maybe at least Forest Gump will find a use for it!
Criticism says amy tan is being biased towards asian men, and she replied by saying "I don't consider myself as asian, I consider myself as american" clearly she's feels low about of herself because of her race.
If she marry a white man or making all of her asian characters marry white men, that's fine as well. but what is offensive is that she portrayed all asian men as abusive inscrutable villains
Just because she feels low about herself doesn't mean she can make all other asians feel low
She had 2 of the daughters marry asian men. The daughter divorced the asian. Lena was still married to her asian husband. Waverly got the divorce. And she did not portray all asian men as abusive inscrutable villians. In China that is how some of the men behave but not all.
But what is wrong with her considering herself American? Guess you dont
1:03 Amy Tan is a paradox. She portrays Asian men as callous, undemonstrative jerks, and white men as the white knights(no pun intended)in shining armor to liberate Asian women from their "oppressive" male counterparts. Then,Tan paints WASPs as de facto biggots disguised as liberals.
I don't give a Godamnn. You know why?I make delusional Asian girls with their white b/f's have qualms about their relationship whenever I walk by.I'm that fucking HOT biatchh.
Hehe don't let it get to you. I'm black. Well...when I was younger I was angry on how they stereotype blacks as gangster, pants sagging. And also these supposed dumb talks and stuff. Hehe some of us have some common sense. So you have to be strong in life.
I saw this movie in tenth grade! All the students were cheering on this part at 2:14 when Ted stands up to his mom and defends Rose! He like telling his mom that Rose is HIS queen and she not coming between them no matter what! Rose is clearly surprised by this act of courage on his part. Just watch her facial expression at 2:14! Ha! :)
This isn't a simple exchange. In the book Rose and the guy always had a bad marriage, and used the race issue as a flimsy excuse for courtship. It would have been better off if the mother kept her mouth shut so Rose/Ted would have broke up on their own instead of marrying.
hahaha! that stupid woman got told. what a racist piece od shit...but then again, racism is the illness sewed into the very fabric of this country. when will america get passed these hang-ups?
If Rosie was black, Ted's mom would be screaming to have her hung! She'd be saying, "Lynch that monkey!" That is very sad but here she is saying similar stuff to her but in a calm manner like that is supposed to make it less offensive. Rosie is there wondering what she did wrong. Oh and if Rosie was black, she would have jumped Ms. Jordan right then and there! Pow! Ted and his dad would have had to get Rosie off his mom, she'd be messing her up so bad! Rosie be like, "You want some more, huh?"
Ted's mama is trippin' man, that woman needs to learn to accept change and adapt, shoot! She so stuck in what she used to, being around a person like Rosie is like getting a knife to her throat! Rosie is trying to be as calm and diplomatic as possible, but Ted's mother is making that very hard for her. I feel bad for both of them. It's sad that Rosie had to go thru all this negativity at this party and it's sad that Ted's mother refuses to release her anger and mistrust of Asian people!
Rose has got to be thinking, "What I understand Ms. Jordan is you don't want me around your son and you're afraid I'll hurt your family! Look, I care about Ted. I would never hurt him or you! Stop assuming things!"
Ted's mom is clearly threatend by Rosie or she wouldn't have linked her with the Vietnam War before even getting to know her. She's crushed Rosie into this tiny space with her assumptions so she doesn't have to deal with her anymore! She just found a non-violent, covert way to tell Rosie off! She doesn't know Rosie, so she fears she will swipe Ted from her and poison him with her ideas, thoughts, & customs. It's sad but human nature cuz we happy with familarity & the unknown scares people!
lol white chicks feel VERY threatened by azn girls. once they find out how white guys forget all about them once theyre with azn girls they turn bitter and racist like this old bitch here. seen it so many times now how white chicks look at with my best friend, who is white and with an azn girl. they get insecure and angry
...I'm sorry I'm only fifteen, so please forgive me if I don't quite get this right, but you hate all white american men because of this FICTIONAL bitch and his racist mom ? Yeah some guys (and girls) act like that, but I'm sure a few asians have done it before too. && if its because you hate the movie then thats just a bad movie, it doesn't mean all white men made movies suck. A damn thirty year old ? You're a damn fool. yeah its true, I have no respect; go cry about it.
I picked up this movie when I was starting a women's history class because I thought it would be empowering to asian americans and women. By the time I finished watching it I felt more low about myself as an asian man than I have in a long time; but more disturbing was that I discovered a level of hatred for white men and white men directed hollywood movies which I never possessed in the thirty years of my life before watching this white male ego stroking shit. This woke me up into race politics.
it sounds like u just really hate interracial relationships instead, and are trying to excuse yourself by pretending you don't like the movie because of other things
wtf is wrong with you? maybe a white man made this movie, but an aisan woman wrote it? and it seems to be pretty accurate from what ive read and heard so far? and why do you feel low about yourself? i mean maybe its something i just dont understand, but i think your not making any sense at all!
This movie is ok but this scene would have been better if the asian chick would have said to that old hag "oh, you don't likey me, oh fuck a you!!" Then she would have karate chopped her in the windpipe and said "how you likey me now beeotch!!"
How can you have asian people in a movie and have no karate?? Thats crazy, thats like having a movie about Italians and it not be about the mob.
This was an amazing and inspiring book to read. There are not many movies that turn out better than the book, but in this case there is an acception (in my opinion). The movie had amazing acting and intense emotion I truly loved it!
Got that right! The issues in this film affect ALL humanity! Every person who has ever felt insulted or ridiculed or judged before others can relate to the stories told in this film, especially kids and their parents cuz everyone has family conflict to deal with at times.
You're not taking my house, you're not taking my daughter, you're not taking any part of me, because you don't know who I am. I died sixty years ago. I ate opium and I died for my daughter's sake. Now get out of my house!
why is everyone making such a big deal about this movie? The book was great and if you've ever read it..Amy Tan wrote it to bridge the gap between her mother and her grandmother and from what I've heard she did and this book was awesome it just shows the bond between mothers and daughters.
Hey, no offense but that whole thing with Ted and Rosie getting married was rushed! It's like Ted saves Rosie from his mom's insults and then sweeps her off her feet but well the relationship turned sour later due to his no longer being receptive to her emotional needs. Rosie had to bite her tongue there. I know if she wasn't in a good mood she would have gone off on that woman.
Got that right! That woman made some real stupid assumptions about Rosalyn right there. Some very demeaning ones at that but spoke in a gentle tone as if that was supposed to make it more tolerable! It would be the same if someone looked at me and because I'm African-American made the assumption that all I do is gang bang. Real stupid. It's really sad because it destroys the happiness of just interacting and getting to know people.
I love, love this movie. Even though this film touched a diversity of audiences, Hollywood can't shake its desire to produce Asian flicks that are placed in the Ming dynasty or feature martial arts. Yeah for contemporary American films that show the diversity of cultural experiences in this country.
Ooh that's right! Man, if she was more assertive she would have gone off on Ted's mom right there! If Rosie an aggressive person, she would have slapped the mess out of her for what she just said. Like, "Woman, don't you dare insult me like this! What have I ever done to you, Ted, or your family to make you feel threatened by me, huh?" That's got to be what was going thru Rosie's head as she listened to Ted's mom associate her with being nothing more than a war victim!
The day Amy Tan and the rest of these racist bitches die, I will go and celebrate the freedom from negativity towards Asian men all over the world. FUCKEN RACISTS.
And with comments like that, how wouldn't any woman find you charming! That kind of negative perspective just is woman-attractant. You have fun with that!
I must agree with you. After reading/watching this movie, people who, are not Asian, usually think they have learned a lot about our culture. The truth is, having a Asian friend does not automatically make you an expert in Asians or Asian culture no matter how much you have deluded yourself. You have no idea what it's like to grow up as an Asian American.
Thanks for reading. If you rate this comment down, please think about that first. =D Amy Tan can't write.
I'm sorry, did you write a book that has been considered a classic? Is your novel on AP reading lists throughout the country? I suppose your novel has already won the The National Book Award. Am I right?
Everyone's a critic, but do you actually have work to prove your point.
I'd have to disagree. You can't criticize the book just because you can't relate to it. I know many asians who can have had experiences similar to those that the characters in the book had. I am asian and i think that this book is very good.
Good at stereotyping against us? Yes, I must agree. just by looking at your name, I can tell that you are a stereotypical asian who does nothing but watch anime and use the computer all day. Congrats.
uh.. stereotyping against who.. you're the one stereotyping... how old are you? twelve? learn to read and then contemplate your comments before you post them.
Man, his mom has insecurity issues! She so afraid Rosie gonna reflect badly on her family, she doesn't want Ted involved with her. Her saying "how unpopular Vietnam was" is her "kind" way of saying, "Rosie, get out! You not gonna come poison my family!" Sad. And yeah their relationship was troubled cuz Ted didn't really trust Rosie to understand him and that was sad. "You want us to argue?" Rosie says later. Ted withdrew into himself which angered Rosie cuz Ted refused to be close to her! Sad.
It's better than I'd imagine it to be. The lady who plays Rose is really pretty. and the other characters look like I'd imagine them to look. It just bugs me that Rose says she's American instead of I'm Chinese like in the book. But that's okay. Hope you can upload more parts of the movie.
classic scene from a classic movie! i love how andrew mcarthy just comes out of nowhere and apparently heard the entire conversation! was he hiding under a bush or something?
He was coming to save his girl from the big bad wolf! His mom is way too controlling! She clearly considers Rosie beneath her which just ruins the atmosphere of the party and makes Rose feel unwanted and unappreciated. On the inside Rose is crying but on the outside she standing up to Ms. Jordan and setting her straight about who SHE is!

FUCKEN RACISTS.
gungwilo 4 years ago
And with comments like that, how wouldn't any woman find you charming! That kind of negative perspective just is woman-attractant. You have fun with that!

I must agree with you. After reading/watching this movie, people who, are not Asian, usually think they have learned a lot about our culture. The truth is, having a Asian friend does not automatically make you an expert in Asians or Asian culture no matter how much you have deluded yourself. You have no idea what it's like to grow up as an Asian American.
Thanks for reading. If you rate this comment down, please think about that first. =D Amy Tan can't write.

true dat! being an asian american, i see how u feel and i agree... Amy Tan can't write!

I'm sorry, did you write a book that has been considered a classic? Is your novel on AP reading lists throughout the country? I suppose your novel has already won the The National Book Award. Am I right?
Everyone's a critic, but do you actually have work to prove your point.
bobjohnson513 3 years ago 2
I'd have to disagree. You can't criticize the book just because you can't relate to it. I know many asians who can have had experiences similar to those that the characters in the book had. I am asian and i think that this book is very good.

Good at stereotyping against us? Yes, I must agree. just by looking at your name, I can tell that you are a stereotypical asian who does nothing but watch anime and use the computer all day. Congrats.
Lordoink 3 years ago
uh.. stereotyping against who.. you're the one stereotyping... how old are you? twelve? learn to read and then contemplate your comments before you post them.

Old enough to understand a retard thanks. =D
I didn't SAY you were stereoyping; you're just a stereotypical asian. Disgrace. D=

racist son of a bitch! But Rose is hot! I just loved how she came at the mom when she said "I'm not Vietnamese I am American!" That was hot...

OMG! WHERE CAN I FIND A MAN LIKE THAT!? Ugh...I don't know if there will ever be a movie I haven't loved Andrew McCarthy in. He's just so...valiant!
HPgroupie 4 years ago
Did you read the book? In the end, their relationship goes sour because he ends up having insecurity issues =(
iammonicalewinsky 4 years ago
Man, his mom has insecurity issues! She so afraid Rosie gonna reflect badly on her family, she doesn't want Ted involved with her. Her saying "how unpopular Vietnam was" is her "kind" way of saying, "Rosie, get out! You not gonna come poison my family!" Sad. And yeah their relationship was troubled cuz Ted didn't really trust Rosie to understand him and that was sad. "You want us to argue?" Rosie says later. Ted withdrew into himself which angered Rosie cuz Ted refused to be close to her! Sad.

That was a totally racist comment right there.

It's better than I'd imagine it to be. The lady who plays Rose is really pretty. and the other characters look like I'd imagine them to look. It just bugs me that Rose says she's American instead of I'm Chinese like in the book. But that's okay. Hope you can upload more parts of the movie.
silentN0ISE 4 years ago 6
i think by saying she's American corrects the misconception that only Caucasians are Americans. It gives the woman less reasons to belittle rose.

classic scene from a classic movie! i love how andrew mcarthy just comes out of nowhere and apparently heard the entire conversation! was he hiding under a bush or something?
drunkpaula 4 years ago 2
Haha maybe he was hiding under her skirt hahaha. I love Andrew McCarthy. He's fab.
skullrocker 4 years ago
He was coming to save his girl from the big bad wolf! His mom is way too controlling! She clearly considers Rosie beneath her which just ruins the atmosphere of the party and makes Rose feel unwanted and unappreciated. On the inside Rose is crying but on the outside she standing up to Ms. Jordan and setting her straight about who SHE is!
