89 was Suncoast's final year. Magic started in 90 with all of the folks from Suncoast, including Robert W Smith. I was there, I marched 'em both. Later on Suncoast was reborn, but it wasn't the same corps.
This horn line took 3rd in horns (only SCV and Phantom were better) in the 89 semis, with only 48 ish playing horns. The rest were plugs, so while 85 was awesome, we were fierce. The cut off at the end of the 89 opener doesn't get any better.
@jwrenell Well no corps is really the " same " corps it was the year before with members changing and staff, etc. I was there 93 - folding in 95 and we were taught by some people you marched with and some who were teaching the year you were there. We still carried on traditions, we still went through the hell that is ( was since it' gone ) the airport field, we had the same etiquette in uniform or in corps jacket you did, folded our jackets the same way and most important The Greatest Love
@jwrenell damn right James! remember in hornline 3 weeks before finals, all of us coming up to see the tuner while the ensemble was sustain third space "C". As God as my judge that thing was tap dead center and not moving! I have NEVER before or since seen a large ensemble do that. you know how strobes will dance when everyone is playing even the same note. DEAD CENTER!!
Actually, this was their last year in finals...the corps didn't truly fold for another few years...and by then, Magic of Orlando had started up (which was really Suncoast reborn to a large degree)
This isn't a bad production...but 85 was the better musical version (89 has the visual edge, tho)
Would give my blood for the sheet music of "Midnight in Miami".
Could you ask Robert sending me the score of this music ? In pdf-file .

This was their last year on the field. I wonder if any of the kids in the corps knew.
