  • Ah yes good ol Japanese animation at its best I think this was the only animation in the world at that time American and Japanese animators teamed up.. I miss the eighties also..I never got to see Mighty Orbot toys back in the day the show was in season..Target stores I remember (when the Japanes trade with the U.S was at full throttle) that I would see Voltron's 1-2-3 toys , Shogun Warriors , and original Transfomers ,but now it sucks with made in china shit ! "Go Mighty Orbots"....

  • @TheMikaloo Bionic Six was also a US-Japan co-production. Same studios too.

  • I wish I was in command of those robots. I'd make some major changes to this planet.

  • I dont like the unecery narator in cartoon :(

  • Why does Ohno need a space helmet?

  • Hight production values of ANY 80's animation. This makes it the most gorgeous animated series EVER.Period.

Ok it helped that it was just 13 eps sp EVRY ep was movie quality but DMA...this show is the gold standard. Really another level. Even the music and sound is on another level. Damn,

  • Finally a clip from this show... unfortunately I hardly got to see any episodes properly since my piano lessons where scheduled half way through them :( ... although i was lucky enough to see the first and the last episode entirely (I remember one where all the bots where imprisoned and given slave jobs). I loved how they actually ended with a proper ending rather than just stopping and leaving it unfinished. Must admit I had an odd crush on the two female bots... still do.

  • Wow brings back memories of childhood. It is a shame they canceled it, evidently the folks who made the go-bots brought a law suit against them or something. Never mind that Or-bots was better (I.M.O.)

  • I posted this elsewhere. But, Star Raiders (the game Rob is playing) was an actual Atari game from back in the day? Did anyone here have an Atari computer? I didn't but my neighbor did and I used to play Star Raiders on it. They had a version for the Atari 2600 but it sucked, compared to the computer version.

  • This show had the BEST sound effects and music from ANY cartoon of the 80's! I wanna be a kid again. :(

  • We need Mighty Orbots!! ... ... ..wtf do you mean you're under the ice? Antartica!? And you're in...Mexico!? The Grand Canyon!? *rubs eye's in frustration* ...we all, LIVE together. Wtf are you guys going out that far for?

  • voltron is not unique unlike the robots in orbots they have their own abilities...voltron are just lions and mouse flying a machine...never enjoy that show...compare to the orbots

  • Sick animation for tv

  • ahhhhh....been looking for the Orbots! I loved them growing up waaaayyyy better than Voltron or that cheap looking Gobots. The Mighty Orbots didn't get the respect it deserved. More eps please!

  • Pffft, Voltron wannabes.

  • The animation was done by TMS studios in Japan

  • @d00mfan89 creators of Bionic Six as well! :)

  • Ah...Rob sounds like...it is! Voice actor Hal Rayle, who voiced Rob Simmons in the Mighty Orbots, also voiced Eric/Sport 1 in Bionic Six. I believe TMS, like most studios I researched, kept their main voice actors in-house for several cartoon series, which saved time and money, as well.

  • @dndrequiem

Actually, it's Barry Gordon, who also voiced Donatello in the 80's TMNT series.

  • @joshnickerson That's right. I actually corrected myself a few months ago.

  • @dndrequiem ...or so I thought. Probably did so on another MO episode.

  • Stop announcing everything, Space Ghost!

The animation IS better than some classic TF, but man, when these characters aren't doing the Voltron, they are annoying on a Wheelie level.

  • @bannerman06 Agreed. Over-the-top during the intro is ok...but not every time they change!

  • Damn, this aired in the mid-eighties? The animation is fantastic for that time period! I can also see how this show influenced the style for Transformers Animated.

  • The Gobots were trash, never liked that toon that much. I loved the Orbots when i was a kid. Long after the Orbots was cancelled I use to pretend my Blaster Autobot was the Orbots. I wish a toy company would make some Orbot toys I would buy them. :)

  • Not enuff dakka!

  • Loved the Orbots. The cartoon was the first collaboration between American and Japenese artist and computer animation teams to which producing the Mighty Orbots was very expensive using (at the time) the latest technology.

  • I havn't sen this in about 20 years. Now I can recap on the characters and see the episodes I've never seen.

  • A Saturday morning fav!!

  • It always intrigues me the excellent animation of many of the 80's cartoons considering the time period, and as opposed to some of today's cartoons!

  • actually you are eigth man now a days they use tooo much 3d animation with cartoon computer based characters...

  • True! Iron Man Armored Adventures is a prime example. Looks great, but u would "expect" that type of animation (cg) for today's time. Alot of the 80's stuff really did look ahead of it's time!

  • its so koool that sometimes i feel badd.....now when i watch tv you see the characters of the cartoons sooo toy-look-a-like that its like kids watch (dad buy me one)....stupid man..

  • @Orbot I agree. It's like they're not trying anymore.

  • @AngelicDemon767 True. Not much effort. They seem to rely on cg, which is fine, and some of today's animation does look pretty tight, but overall, there's not much effort or imagination. The cg is the "easy" way out. Don't get me wrong, a few 80's toons did have so-so animation ,but it WAS the 80's lol. But alot from the 80's had some awesome animation no doubt.

  • @Orbot Yes the 80's was such an awesome generation...shame this cartoon only lasted 13 episodes...damm those go bots...

  • @AngelicDemon767 Yes, very underrated and short-lived. I always said that maybe if it wasn't for Voltron, perhpas Orbots would've had mor shine...just a hunch, lol!

  • @Orbot Oh...I read on wiki that the creator of GoBots was going to file a lawsuit against the creator of the orbots for coping their designs so they had to stop...

  • @AngelicDemon767 Really? Hmm, that's interesting, gotta look into that. That would explain the Orbots' short-lived existence. Their "design" however, sisn't seem to favor that of the Gobots THAT much to me, but perhaps it did to Hanna-Barbera, lol.

  • @AngelicDemon767 Sorry to interrupt but thats crazy. I loved Mighty Orbots and nothing about this cartoon reminds me of GoBots. LoL GoBots remind me of kind of a knock of Transformers lol.

  • Don't get any better than this. 80's cartoons were top of the line (most of'em, lol) Orbots was HOT!! Unfortunately they were in the shadow of Voltron, which is probably why they didn't last that long as a series.

  • did a voltron character show up on one of the tranformers episode being a train that would change to a rocket launch......it was on the moon....something like that?

  • Hmm, can't say for sure. If anything, it may have been a character that closely resembles a character from that show possibly

  • animation = good

    voiceovers = good

    intro = awesome

    story = not bad!

not exactly like voltron - the robots were actual characters, not the drivers of the robots

    good tv show!

  • Do they have commercial breaks right after the openings in America?

Sometimes it looks like they have a commercial break right before the credits too.

  • My favorite animated series of all time- I'm fortunate to have the series on video!

Good of you to share this- it really needs to come to DVD.

  • Sooo good. Especially for the early mid-eighties.

There is mouth animation matched to dialogue. Very very rare for that time.

  • never noticed that. Animation was good though. Only other animation I know to match mouth movement with dialouge is Akira. Funny even back then waaaaay befor I ever say 'Akira' I knew this was new/top shelf animation. I saw this and said "This aint Hanna Barbabra" LOL

  • i forgot all about this. Voltron rip off tho.

  • hellz yeah!!!

  • Wow. I was searching for this cartoon for years. The best I could come up with was the same link in the subject and the opening theme in .wav. I plum forgot about youtube! To answer some replies, the link in the subject answers everything about the show. The animation action scenes were ahead of their time. BTW:

    - Orbots is (plural) because they were still their individual selves. The giant robot doesn't have a separate personality i.e., their holding hands but in a unique way.

  • when was this made i was born in '85 and i don't remember seeing this. though i have to admit i'm kind of mad i did'nt see this it's very well done considering that quality of 80's animation.

  • Why's Orbots' name plural?

  • U know thats a VERY good question. There ARE 5of them. However the narrator does say "... forging together to form Mighty Orbots" Which does imply that once 'fogred together' they should be called Mighty Orbot (singular) doesnt it? Frankly I think it comes from the translation from Japanese to English. I belive (and I may be wrong on this someone please correct me if Im wrong) that the cartoon was originally created in Japan.

  • IT would be hot if they bought back the mighty orbots, market it properly and have dedicated producers, directors, music producers and staff. I think it would have a chance. Its a shame that this cartoon wasn't that successful. I mean back in the day this was an actual attempt at making a great cartoon. Not like today where everything is cookie cutter with no purpose of plot or dynamic characters. I face today and feel sorry for the quailty our current generation gets. Matter of fact everything.

  • god, so good quality!

  • When the orbots where separated they were the same size as their inventor but when they united they were that much bigger. Do they grow as part of the transformation sequence?

  • Suspension of disbelief, dear. Suspension of disbelief.

  • Umbra is Dr. Claw? Huh.

  • Sir. I am not gay, but I love you for posting this.

  • It's Godmars, apparently piloted by your run of the mill Scooby Doo styled gang of professional whatever...

  • WRONG.

Both Godmars and Orbots were FROM THE SAME Japanese Animation company. Is that Orbots is joint project between two countries.

  • I love Japanime and this cartoon is an all time favorite of mine!

    Thank you for posting it..

I have been wanting to see this cartoon again for so very long..

  • you know what it is..

    Japanime!

American idea of interesting cartoons are just that..

Spongebob ed ed and eddie.. (three stooges format slap slap nuck nuck.. And personally I hate cartoons like that! Don't like the three stooges either!)

Japanime is much more serious.. (Yes Mighty Orbots is a voiced over japanime cartoon!)

    Look at Gatchaman! There's another..

  • No, Orbots was a joint venture between a Japanese and American studio. The storyline was hashed out between both studios to appeal to both Japanese and American audiences. They planned to air it simultaneously in both nations, but Tonka's lawsuit prevented it from being released in Japan. It wasn't unti later that Japan got it as an OVA.

  • Actually, it isn't. Mighty Orbots is a joint project by both American and Japanese animators, but it is NOT a voiced-over japanime cartoon.

  • And we know TMS did the animation.

  • Orbots is not a voiced over japanime cartoon!

    IT'S an actual Japanese-American Anime.

Well except Orbots was released in japan as an OAV due to lawsuits.

  • Hasbro ripped off this concept of using 4 smaler robots and one large one for a gestault. Why they won a court order to discontinue this series is beyond me when Voltron had the same concept.

Good idea that could use better narration. I don't remember it being this bad.

  • Gary Owens was THE MAN at that time and he did a very good job, I thought. Now I think I'd have either Dan Green or even maybe even Jim Ross take a stab at it. :)

  • Correction. Gary Owens is still THE MAN in voice acting. I only wish that he voiced the Narrator or Prof. Utonium for 'The Powerpuff Girls' show. No offense to Tom Kane voicing them. I love Tom Kane, but I would love to hear Gary Owens to take a stab at those 2 characters.

  • Correction. Tom Kane didn't voice the narrator for 'Powerpuff Girls.' He was played by Ernie Anderson and Tom Kenny.

  • Acknowledged.Thank you for clearing that up. I get those two particular voice actors' names mixed up, but their names sound the same.

  • I remember telling myself these cartoons werent as good as Transformers. But by today's standards, these are majorly kick ass. Theres just so much substance in these old toons. The new crap we see today like EdEd and Eddie, Camp Laslo etc... garbage nonsense.

  • These new cartoons (not 'toons as we know them) are disposable and not built for long-term endurance, although they do have their devotees, witness the witless sponge SpongeBOOB Square***.

  • where do they come up with these themes? i swear all cartoons are based off this same shit..are kids calling in and asking "please give me more magical shapeshifting lizard beings" i dont get it..watch TOONDisneys line-up and take note of all the plots..its all the same themes. Are all these pulled out of someones ass? why years later we see the same shit..reptiles as bad guys..not junebugs,elephants,tigers,goldfish..???

  • Archetypes man... allegories... myths. All cultures have their mythologies, projections and symbols. We are not the exeption.

  • exactly... same stories... different names since theyre different languages.

  • In suit-monkey corporate-speak, this is referred to as "standards and practices," and "Paradigms."

  • It's called "formulaic." Some stick-up-their keisters focus group of 5 year olds and monkeys in suits thought it was a riot. My Pop used to call it "following the sheep." The same is true of reality TV: "Survivor" worked and now we see similar dreck that came after it.

  • "why years later we see the same ****..reptiles as bad guys..not junebugs,elephants,tigers,goldfish..???" I agree with that. I mean, yes, I understand about archetypes, mythology and so on, but I like reptiles. It would be nice, every now and then to see heroic reptilian characters.

  • This animation is some of the best iv ever seen. I think this show and also don bluth's style is animation at its finest. absolutely breathtaking. i love that it also gets the imagination rolling to think of how big umbra really is.

  • This was one of the best cartoons of the 80's! It was also incredibly underrated and in the shadow of Voltron ofcourse!

  • nothing beats 1980's cheese. the "valiantly running towards destiny" closing bit was a nice touch! lol.

  • Q recuerdo!!!! q buena serie fue!!!! hace mucho q no la veia!!!! lastima q no esta subtitulada

  • That dude sounds like Donatello..

  • I think his real name is Barry Gordon.

And you're right that is Donatello! Good Ear!

  • haha yah!

when i heard it, i was like.. oh shit, that dude's voice sounds a lot like donatello!

    haha..

  • These shows thought up in the US and produced in Japan owe a HUGE debt to the Japanese studios that produced them. This show has some of the stupidest character designs ever - but the movement and cinematography are classic 80s anime. I shudder to think what Mighty Orbots, Thundercats, or Real Ghostbusters would have looked like had they been completely domestically produced. Ick.

  • True but if they weren't domesticated by American standards they would not have made it to the Saturday Morning line up. Which is a huge market to showcase their work sell product (TOYS) and make MONEY, which is real reason in f the first place. What's excecptable in one culture is not exceptable in another. This show really rocked!

  • Uh, no. They were created, made AND produced in the US. The animation for the shows was done in labor in Japan, but that's it.

Mighty Orbots was something of a co-production, however.

  • I wish they would have made toys from this series.

  • See the above postings. That lawsuit from Tonka blew any and all hopes of merchandising. Tonka STILL makes toys for future Samsonite Gorillas who plan to get jobs either in Al-Queda or as Airport baggage handlers.

  • I used to watch this show with my nephew, I even wrote fanfic for it, before I knew what Fanfic

was! :) also this was the first cartoon that played in both Japan and the U.S. at the same time!

  • I LOVE Mighty Orbots ever since I was a kid. Does anybody knows on where to download Mighty Orbots??

  • Used to watch it all the time before moving to the States. Crunch and lil O were my favorite. ^_^. Kids these days dont only not have cartoons...they just lack about everything that gives REAL joy...:-(

  • I actually don't remember this show. But GOD is the animation flawless!!!!

  • I used to love this show, and of course I loved the Transformers too. It's too bad this show didn't stay on as long. It was fun.

  • 80s cartoons at its best!

  • Cartoons in the 80's are always supreme. These are the kind of cartoons that you rush from school, and wake up early on Saturday mornings for. You have to feel sorry for these teenagers today for not experiencing that kind of joy.

  • QFT

  • What do you mean QFT?

  • QFT- Quoted For Truth. They're saying they agree with you.

  • Thanks for letting me know that.

  • You're welcome.

  • SpongeBOOB (Intentional) and that smelly ghost of dog-droppings past, Skunk Fu (on Kids WB now) don't cut it. Others like Viva Pinata are OK, but not quite the same thing.

  • This is a fabulously animated cartoon.

Now I have a WISH: have the Mighty Orbots staff work on G1 Transformers, too!!!

  • Loved this show as a kid. Wish it was on dvd. I used to record them on VHS.

  • "PLASMUS, SOLIDIFY BEFORE ME."

Classic. My favorite eighties cartoon. Too bad about the legal BS keeping this forever from DVD.

  • Cant't confirm this, but the voice of Rob sounds exactly like Fry from futurama, but the show's are almost 2 decades apart!

  • I just looked on IMDB. Apparently, he is a character actor from the 80's (though his career seems to be consistent through 2004). I know exactly who he is - and remember him well as Chrissy's "stalker" on Threes's Company.

  • Also, the VA for Rob played Donatello in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original version from the 80s). It is an interesting factoid. ^^

    Bryon

  • Barry Gordon did a lot of shows, and I think is currently the Honeynuts Bee, as well as the Quick Bunny. But he was also president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1988 to 1995.

  • nice stuff...used to watch this every saturday afternoon on ABC...nice memories to remember...hope you could upload more...thanks.

  • Disco music intro, off the hook.

I remember one episode where the Orbots were stuck on a slave planet and Bo or Boo had to wash these 60 ft stacks of dishes.

  • that episode was the shit... they need to post more on here... they have alot of them on ebay..

  • That episode was "Devil's Asteroid". The Orbots were framed for crimes commited by Tobor, a Shadow robot that looked like Mighty Orbots. Bo was the one that had to wash dishes. Boo has the "easy" job of looking after Draconous' flower garden.

  • After watching this again some 23 years later...I don't remember why I liked it.

  • I know exactly how you feel

  • Anybody got more episodes to post? MO is off the chain!

  • this is my all time fave cartoon series! i wish it continued! thanx for posting it. are there more on here? i can't find them. i used to have such a crush on Bo and Boo

  • I happen to have 5 episodes of this series. Direct from the factory tapes.

  • Ohh man...haven't seen this in over 20 years! It's a shame this show got cancelled. VERY well made.

  • What's amazing is the animation budget for a TV show like this in 1984. The designs, coloring and motion was very fluid. Quite a gem of the 80s

  • Well, it was partually animated in Japan, so I, for one, would expect no less.

  • Really? You might change your mind if you've ever seen Pokemon or Speed Racer! >=}

  • Speed Racer was animated in the 60s, so it doesn't count. As for Pokemon... What's wrong with Pokemon animation?

  • Well the animation in Pokemon looked a little choppy as a TV show, but not the movies. Speed Racer was more choppy than Pokemon. I believe that was the point TheGameroomBlitz was trying to make.

  • Speed Racer was among the first, which makes it seem primitive by today's standards, of course. The stories and characters were above average, which saves it, along with the music that burns itself into your memory. The villains were silly, but Racer X stood out. A chimp for a housepet?

  • I don't think all the villains in Speed Racer were that cheesy. I thought Captain Terror was pretty interesting.

  • Nothing, if you like moving mouths on still faces. It's like Clutch Cargo: The Next Generation!

  • Hey, Jess. Didn't expect to see YOU in the retro section of YouTube. I had no idea you went for this sort of thing.

BTW, Pokemon isn't THAT bad. I've seen MUCH worse.

    And WTH is Clutch Cargo?

  • It's basically a "cartoon" where peoples' lips are pasted onto still pictures. Look it up on YouTube... it's not good, but it's good for a few laughs.

  • Two words: LOW BUDGET.

  • Please Please this really needs to come out on DVD. Until then, thanx for posting this, as this was one of my favorite cartoons when I was younger!

  • Finally, I've been hearing a lot of good things about this show and so far I'm not dissappointed.

  • This show hasn't aired since it was on ABC back in 1983-1984.

  • was it aired on channel 5 in the 1990`s?

  • Way better than Voltron,In my opinion.

  • This was such a cool Saturday morning cartoon. Thanks for posting it.

  • Awesome! Finally an episode. Thanks, brings back memories. I can't wait for part 2!
