  • hey jordan the cat, loved your perfomance, only one problem , how can anybody have a favorite John Prine song ,its kinda like picking your favorite child,i have 2 favorite kids but probably 40 or so favorite prine songs

  • Great job

  • Great cover written by a national treasure. His duet with Steve Goodman on Souveniers is one of the best two-guitar songs I've ever heard. What do you think?

  • You do the best Prine covers! Better then the original, in my opinion!

  • Nice version, I've enjoyed all your uploads. If I had to choose, it'd be Sam Stone and Hello for me too but there are so many. Take care...

  • very nice , can go wrong with prine.

  • Although this song was written just after the Viet Nam War, it's sad to know Sam Stone lives on through more government clusterf*cks.

  • Howdy Jordan

those are my 2 favorite JP songs do

    no disapointment here

    keep on pickin'

    Rich in WV

  • @1958wvpicker Thanks, Rich. I've since learned to play this song with the correct chords though, and should probably upload a new and improved version. And seeing as you're a guitar player, you should probably upload some songs yourself- it's fun, and gives one a reason to practice.

  • Howdy Jordan

yeah i'd like to do that some time

but i have no idea how to do it or what i need to do it

    how about some tips

    Rich

  • @1958wvpicker All you need is a video camera- they are becoming quite inexpensive these days, and perhaps a cheap tripod. Even a webcam with a built-in mic will work, and that's what I used for some of my early videos, but you'll get better results from a proper video camera. Then you can use Windows MovieMaker (free software from MicroSoft) to trim your video to your liking. You might even get some video editing software in the box when you buy your camera.

  • howdy Jordan

    thanks

can you recomend what make and what model

    thanks

    Rich

  • @1958wvpicker Howdy Rich: The Hitachi unit I bought a couple of years ago is probably obsolete already so I can't really advise you except to say that video cameras keep getting more powerful and less expensive all the time. You almost can't go wrong. I recommend staying away from cameras which record to MiniDV tape though- transferring files to computer means playing through the entire video, whereas hard drive or flash memory card cameras allow drag & drop transfer.

  • MAN ,I JUST LOVE THOSE OLD JOHN PRINE SONGS AND YOU DO THEM PROUD. THANKS FOR SHARING !

  • fantastic picking on one of my favorite songs...well done.

  • @frostywildcat I got some of the chords wrong on this one, as has been pointed out previously, but thanks.

  • ROFL!!!

Well, you do have a good sense of humour - such is not the makings of mere mortals or trolls either one - so I am glad to have made your aquiantance!

And I stick by my first post - you done good!!!

    LORD BLESS!!!

  • @jehovahuponyou Thanks, man!!!

  • You ain't no Lind Runnerstadt, but you done good.

  • @jehovahuponyou Who is Lind Runnerstadt? I just did a YouTube search and came up empty.

  • @jordanthecat - Ole Linder Runnrstadt is that cute, black haired, fat gal what used to sang all them Bubble Hobby covers and got herself rich - some said she rode a Stoned Pony whilst she sang dem songs - I couldn't say, I never seen her, cept onct.

They say she threwed it all away and beginst to sang Opree - what a damn shame - don't get no idees about sang Opree now, you hear!!!

    ROFL!!!

    LORD BLESS YOU Jordan!!!!!!!

  • @jehovahuponyou I hate it when I accidentally feed a troll. My bad.

  • @jordanthecat - Why my good fellow, you play and sing as though you were under a bridge, then you are unable to take neither a joke nor a compliment befitting your talent, or should I say 'lack there of', and worst of all you tag 'ME' a 'Troll'...you sorely disgrace even the title, 'Troll', so I shall not call you one!

  • @jehovahuponyou Well okay then, thanks very much for the kind words that were in there- they are much appreciated! And I sure do like it better when you use proper English in your posts. The acoustics under this bridge of mine can sometimes sound pretty good, but it's a bit hit-and-miss.

    Cheers!

  • @jordanthecat - TROLL? Hmmm, it seems my good fellow that you missed the sense of humor in my posts and my compliment to you. Is it possible that you, not I, make your abode under a bridge?

  • I'm with ya Martin, Sam Stone, Hello, and Souvenirs can be liked by just about everyone. (even this 22 year old who grew up on JP)

  • @aspinall06 So true. I first heard those songs over thirty years ago, when I was about your age. And I love them to this day.

  • Excellent sir! Very enjoyable listen. Thanks!

  • What a great song..and what a great cover! I'm sinful in that I covet the talent that folks like you and John Prine have when it comes to playing the guitar (I can sing some..and do)...Great Job!

  • I had to chuckle. Sam Stone and Hello.. are my favorites too. I wonder how many others feel the same way. John Prine wrote some amazing tunes for sure. Nice job. Thanks.

  • We just saw John Prine in concert a few weeks ago, and a significant chunk of the songs he played were from that first album of his. I don't think I've ever been to one of his shows where he didn't play Sam Stone and Hello In There.

Have a look at the recent comment from alert YouTuber fredd2999, who points out that I'm playing some wrong chords on this song.

  • Ditto! With "Sittin on a Rainbow" Coming in third.

  • I feel the same way :)

  • Great Job*****

  • you did ok

but in the verse where you go from d - g

    its d7 - g

and during the course where you go c - am

    its c- dm

    and the second circle on the course is c - am - D7 - g - g7

    your playing a d

    but still good job

  • I learned this song by ear but I know I don't have it quite right. I'll try what you suggest and get back to you.

  • Yep, I just tried it and it sounds better- sounds more "right." I'll have to deliberately keep that in mind next time I play it. Thanks!

  • great JP cover.

I really enjoyed this song and your rendition of it

    endless starz

  • Thanks very much for dropping by- I'm glad you liked it!

  • jordan, the way you taught us to play hello in there was great, can you teach us the same with sam stone. please thanks.

  • What I found was this: once I'd finally learned to play Hello In There, it had opened the door to learning all of John Prine's fingerpicking songs by ear, with a certain amount of trial and error involved.

I'm very happy to know that my Hello In There vids helped you- just use the same style and techniques as you learn Sam Stone, and you'll find that you can learn it more easily than someone else can teach it to you.

  • Great cover of a great song.

  • excellent covers, please post more.....do you cover other artists??? keep on plucking!!!

  • Thanks! Most of the songs I've learned over the years are John Prine songs. I guess I just kinda got stuck on his stuff at some point along the way.

  • i've known many a good man thats gone this way jon says it best again great cover keep it up

  • !!!!!!! hell of a job, keep jammin"!!!!!!

  • Very nice, your guitar sounds great and you do a very nice job on the vocals.

  • jordon, you play this sam stone song great, i have learned a great deal from your videos, i'm learning hello in there and i'm having fun at doing so, can you teach us how to play same stone. thanks

  • Me again. I have finally realized that I am "rythmically challenged". The chords I get, but the travis picking is difficult for me to master. How about a super slo-mo lesson for this fingerpickin' style?

  • Travis picking is difficult, but ONLY at first. You're doing the thumb only, everything's cool but then you add a finger and your thumb instantly forgets its rhythmn, right? Try learning *any* very simple pattern (only a couple of fingerplucks) for one chord, in slow motion. Play the one pattern slowly for 10minutes straight, take a break, do it again. Your thumb will start to get the idea that it has to keep going on the beat no matter what the fingers are doing. Start slow, speed up gradually.

  • Time for a lesson CD. I'll pay! Great job on this and the others you have done on youtube.

  • Any guitar teacher can teach this technique in just a few lessons at most, and much better than I could. Hear me now and believe me later once you've got it- over the course of a month or so it becomes easy because it's just a series of simple, repeatable patterns. The thing that you're temporarily finding to be an obstacle- the patterns, is what ultimately makes it easy, and arguably even limiting.

  • Hey, I just put your numbers up to 6,700, way cool. Another great rendition of a classic John Prine tune, you do his songs justice.

  • Hey, thanks for helping my little video reach that next hurdle. I'm glad you liked it- thanks!

  • Please do some more John Prine fingerpicking!

    I love it!!

  • Please do more John Prine fingerpicking songs!! love it!!!

  • i like your pleasaht demeanor and your teaching skills as an aspiring guitarist you have helped me much t y

  • Thanks, and I'm glad that I was of some help to you.

  • You are very good. If you like John Prine, do you like Keith Sykes of Memphis,TN he has written songs with Prine? He has good music to, they are my favorites. James Taylor has nothing on them!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for the kind words! I'm not familiar with Keith Sykes and the samples available on his website didn't give me much to go on but he does sound good.

But never slight JT- he's a poet with a guitar. The only reason I don't play any of his stuff is because I can't- he's just too good for me.

  • Really nice job

  • I'm a big John Prine Fan from N. Ireland and have managed to see him 4 times. I'll also trying to learn some of his songs on my guitar. You are far too modest Jordan, I love your videos and they have really helped me...I hope one day with practice that I can come close to the high standard that you show in all your excellent videos. Thanks so much for this and keep up the good work!!!

  • Bravo!!! Much better than the one I did. But then you are the master... Jerry

  • You are indeed too kind- I'm just a three-chord campfire guitar player who manages to fool some of the people some of the time.

    Cheers, Jerry!

  • Nice job, one of my favorite songs of all time, you played and sang it well.

  • I may post this myself one of these days but I doubt my version will live up to your skills. Great job.

    Charsal

  • Well done!!! A powerful song. Best cover of a

    John Prine song I've heard!!

  • well u havnt seen my dad yet, thats all he plays

  • Always like to hear a John Prine song.

Please have him post a song or two.

  • kk ill try and get him, he knows like all his songs, i got john prines whole discography guitar tabs for him

  • Did I here you say you have beer in the fridge, well i,m putting on my boots and grabbing my guitar on the way out the door.Really my friend you might not think so but that was the best cover of prine I,ve heard on you tube.

  • Heartfelt,just great-enjoy your cover's as much as John Prine himself,Thank's a lot.

  • That's very high praise indeed- not so sure I'm worthy but many thanks!

    Pepi

  • Thank you very much, Pepi! You are always very kind.

  • That's great! I love this song, it is so powerful. You have a great voice and nice playing.

    Keep up the good work.

  • Many thanks! I enjoyed your vocal calisthenics in your A-ha cover. You may just need to tackle some Bee Gees songs next!

  • you did a freat job on this one Ian - wish I could fingerpick like you!

  • Thanks Tom, but tere's not much to it, really- it's just a fairly simple pattern. I'm quite sure that with just a bit of practice you could be doing the same thing by next week.

  • Great job!!!

I wanna come over to your kitchen and jam! LOL!!!

    Keep it coming man,

    Love and peace,

    Mjagwire

  • My guitar isn't always in tune, but there's always beer in the fridge!

  • you do a great job on john prine sounds almost like him keep up the good work

  • Absolutely beautiful, Do you learn these yourself?, amazing!

  • very nice

  • Thanks for listening, and for the kind words.

  • Fantastic, my friend.

  • A really enjoyable rendition, man. Vocal delivery hits all the beats with the right lightness. A really unpretentious version. Loved it. Good raport with the camera, too.

  • Thanks for the kind words, Bub! I've watched a lot of guitar videos where talented players never look up, leaving me, the viewer, feeling a bit left out. But I must admit that it takes deliberate effort.

  • Fantastic job, sir.

  • Great cover of a great song .

  • absoluely excellent version of a great song.

i was goona try to post it

now i see i have some

    work to do.

  • It's good to see other old-timers preserving this essential man's music; and passing it on to the children.

    My respect to you Sir,

    AliasHomegrown
