Has anyone noticed that he's playing in a fucking church or something? The recorded was really near the piano (the original audio of the camera can be heard in the first seconds)
Okay, to all of those who claim he doesn't use the pedal = untrue. BUT, he uses the pedal only a fraction in this piece, only where he has to use it to maintain some legato. This performance is just sickening to the point in thinking it's just impossible to play it this way. But he does it anyhow! Kudos to Mr. Gavrilov!
this has to be one of my favorite interpretations, sounds like he is chopping it up with a staccato knife... unusual to find such a different sound to a familiar etude
@TheMadRhino3 with the way you play the piano, and you think you can criticize one of the greatest living pianists.its like an incompetent man trying to tell ron jeremy how to fuck.Embarrassingly ridiculous.
@semprebrio Well, well, just three lines and two fallacies: ad hominem, and argument from authority. Plus gratuitous profanity, and, possibly, a false analogy. It is unfortunate YoutTube standards for comments are THAT low. .
Crazed this stunning rendition! Stunning technique without pedal and, yes, ridiculous temperament - although sometimes I enjoy it as you enjoy dirty jokes.
Admiro mucho a Gavrilov, pero no me ha gustado esta interpretación.Toca muy claro, pero no transmite la sensación febril y apasionada que debe tener este estudio.Puede ser cosa de ese momento en particular, sin duda es un gran pianista
@thiswastoogood He is 185 cm, always sits high as Richter,Gilels - Neuhaus school - using all the body weight for any power but for avoiding rough sound.
gavrilov has always been one of my favorite pianists. while in my opinion this is not his best interpretation of this etude, if he did indeed perform it with virtually no preparation, as the video's description says, then his pianistic skills are truly legendary.
@Belamus I was with him at that tour. We came by car to Vicenza from San Remo and found out - no conductor. Andrei said no concert. As he has a big heart in 1 hour of emotional discussion with promoter he agreed to improvise not let people down. While he talks he thinks what's next he is going to play:) It was tough!
So great to hear it without the normally far to extensive use of the right pedal. (helps to compare imprecise technical needs) I don't know any comparable approach. Thanks so much Andrei!
Horrible musically speaking. He plays it like a Hanon exercise. Monster technique but no musical feeling at all. Chopin would have been sad.

I heard this man perfom Tchajkovsky's 1st piano concerto 2 days ago. He is an astounding musician and showman.

With it being slightly out of synch, he got up before he finished playing.

I didn't read the text before commenting. If he truly performed a recital to please the public, well, then this is a truly great artist!

of course he could play with a lot more pedal. however, i think he wants to put emphasis on the clarity rather the the musicality of the piece.
after all, it is an etude...
