Just went on my first holiday ever...Decided to go see asia..but I ended up staying in Thailand for the entirety of my holiday. Needless to say my time spent in Thailand was the best few months of my life. And my 19th birthday on Samui was the best birthday i've ever had!

Glad I went alone too, met so many amazing people and did so many great things...I could definetly see myself living there permanently in the future!

While staying there in 02 or 03, I wound up adopting a stray ridgeback for the week. Grew so attached I made arrangements to fly him back to the states with me. Piece of cake. Had to have him checked out by a Vet at the Bangkok Airport, got a certificate, put him in a cat carrier (he was like 2lbs at the time) and played with him all the way back to Detroit. He was buck skin color, the Thai Vet charged me a dollar and the airport code for Bangkok is BKK, so I named him Bukk. Great dog.

The rabies thing never occurred to me. He was such a little puppy at the time. I honestly don't think what I pulled off was normal 'protocol'. Bukk was too young for any shots, all they did was take his temp at the Bangkok vet place. The paper they gave me was all in Thai and the Detroit people were clueless as to what it said. I played like I could speak fluent Thai and translated (big lie) and they bought it cuz they really didn't know what to do at that point and I sounded so confident.

I should mention, I stole the dog from a reggae bar that wouldn't play any reggae music. I had been there twice in one day and they were so busy watching the new TV they'd put in at the bar they refused to launch any tunes. There were 2 cute puppies there I wound up playing with. 2nd time I left I just grabbed the tan one and tossed him in the storage compartment under my scooter's seat and rode him back to my resort for a vacation toy. I only checked as far as what the airlines would require.

They eat dogs over there (beware the 'barking deer' menu item) so I suppose I behaved a bit like that Christian missionary chick down in Haiti except I didn't plan to profit off the dog after I got my hands on him. He got a really nice home next to a park with kids and cats and lots of space to run. He tag teamed moles in my yard w/ my cat and instead of a mole problem I wound up with a hole problem. Now he lives on a big farm in NY. Surely that beats being an appetizer in Asia.

March - August: The weather is still dry in this time, and it is usually very sunny and hot.

In theory, yes. In reality, the weather on Samui does what it likes from years to year. I've been on Samui during seasons that are supposed to be hammering rain, and experienced weeks of glorious blue sky and sun. Other years, it has been hammering rain for days on end with low black clouds obscuring the sun well past New Year during the months it's supposed to be the peak dry time. Samui sometimes obeys the rules, but increasingly the seasons are quite erratic on that island.

Yes, I'd agree that the best advice nowadays is probably February onwards. It's time that guidebooks and travel agents updated things to align with the way climates are changing worldwide. I'm lucky as I go to Thailand independently and have just headed north to places like Ko Samet when it's too wet on Samui. But on 2 week tours, some people are stuck on Samui in their room due to rain, and going out with umbrellas. I feel sorry for them.

I agree with the changes (corruption, Robery, murder etc.) are happening but Still Samui is my little paradise :) I just love the place.
