After having a Taylor spatial frame, I can honestly say that it is not something that I would choose just to gain a few cm. Lengthening is extremely painful and timely.
my cousin had this procedure because his right leg was 2 inches shorter than the left as a result of polio disease. He couldn't even walk up stairs, but after the procedure and years of pain..he is now functioning quite well
@Mugzys2green It's possible, but most doctors prefer not to do it, because it's a risky, long and extremely painful procedure. If you are 5'5 you're still considered normal, yes you're short, but you're not a midget.
They do however the procedure on people with dwarfism or extremely short people, below 5'
Also, if you're short, don't think this surgery is the end all, and your life will change dramatically. People always want to be taller, I'm 6' and I wish I was 6'6'' or something, but yeah...
Are u serious? Ur high enough pretty. Im a girl who only 153cm (i guess 5f1 right?) too short!!! Hate it, look so ugly & hard to find nice clothing fit to my body. I really want to do leg-lengthening surgery so much but everybody tell me its really painful & if surgery fails, becomes disabled people unable to walk...its that is the price for beauty grown taller, so bad.
iv had them! im 15 had my first lot which were Ilizarov in 2007 which helped added 4 cm bigger then like 2 years after that my legs (especially my right) grew outwards so i has another frame put on which were them Taylor Spatial ones in 2010 but then now its grown back outward :(
I have one leg that is shorter than the other, only by a small about 1/2 an inch I believe it was when I got it checked out. Really was a bully magnet though because I walked with my toes pointed inward and pigeon feet was the big insult, but now Its barely noticeable and I only have slight pain. However does anyone know if this is available in the UK, through the NHS or private?
@REVkingtremain Too bad, that you're that narrow-minded =/....such a short leg would have a bad impact on your hips and whatever , additionally it's not very beautiful and so on...and the guy himself was also willing in the surgery, I assume.... so, its ok, I find...
@JACOBSMOM65 I'm considering limb lengthening for my son, who has a congenital discrepancy. He has a orthopedist who has followed him since he was an infant, today he's 16 years old. My son's situation is complicated by issues as well, for several reasons I think the only solution that will work for him is an internal device, and his orthopedist only has experience with the Ilizarov frame. She has no experience with ISKD or the other internal devices. What device did Jacob use, was it ISKD?
Jake gained more than 2 inches with each surgery. He is 18 yrs old now & knows how different his life would have been if not for the surgeries. He hated wearing the shoe with the lift. We did find a shoe repair store who added the height to the sole with lightweight material, but he still didn't like it. But those sneakers were necessary. They kept him from limping &made it possible to run & play basketball. He's a real show-off hockey player too!
Thanks for the information. Does the doctor have any concerns for long-term impact or when someone ages after undergoing this process? Thanks and sorry for the questions.
this surgery is for teens only? adult people can have this surgery? my cousin has his left leg shorter than the right one, about 3 inches, he is 37 years old... thankyou for the info...
As Jacobs mom I'd like to tell all how proud I am of him. The surgeries he endured added nearly 9 inches to his leg. This made it possible for him to engage in all activities like any other child. The operations were difficult and painful for the patient and the family. But the outcome is life changing. Dr.Rozbruch and his staff are outstanding and The Hospital for Spec Surgery is the best. Preparing for one last procedure in the spring. Jacob at 18 and is still healthy, happy and very active
Hello, is Jacob able to play in things such as contact sports (football, basketball) without problems? I am thinking of undergoing this type of surgery for leg-lengthening purposes, but my highest concern is any potential long-term impacts (upon successful surgery and recovery, of course) for high-intensity sports which puts heavy and intense loads on the legs.
Congratulations Jacob! You are stong and I just wish you all the happines...im technically going through the same thing so keep your head high, and dont worry, Uve already gone through the worst!
My friend has a problem with one of his legs. He broke it when he was in the seventh grade and after it healed we noticed he had trouble with balance. His doctor told him he was fine, but during a checkup a few years later a different doctor discovered that it was two and a half inches shorter than the other leg. Now he has to buy special shoes for his condition because his hip pops a lot and he was told that the difference would cause other problems (aside from balance) in the future.
@snuffles689 , at least for my son was well worth the benefits. There are many drs. now that can perform these procedures successfully. Good Luck to your friend.Keep updates coming if he goes for it.

dr. betz in germany do this in a much better way, without this thing around your leg :). I will be operate by him in a few month, because my left leg is shorter than the other.
@missNily4 hey I am answering to a really old comment of yours but I just wanted to tell you that, if you're 16... or 17 as I guess you might be now.. You still have time to grow! I would, at that age, without any doubt take Human Growth Hormones (HGH). You know that doctors treat shortness in children with hgh doses, and it's just a fact: you WILL grow taller of it, whatever your genetics says. Just don't overdose, you can get acromegaly and grow to over 2 meters;) It's not too late, buddy! :)
Do you know the complete success rate is only 40%? Which means you'd likely end up crippled, suffering side effects and stuff. Unless you have a great need, the outcome is not worth the risk, not to mention the procedure is unimaginably painful.
I'm so definitely going to do this some day, somehow. I hate my height. I'm male, only 165 cms, about 5'5. I can't picture my whole life being this short. It's a shame, but I actually don't think I have a choice.
I'm a guy too Huentel. I'm 168cm, really wanted to be 180. Most of my friends are 175 to 180cm. I really wanted to go through this surgery but afriad of the risk !!!
I've always wanted this surgery. I have a really bad insecurity about my height - I'm only 5'2" and my leg-to-upperbody ratio is way off. I feel so disproportionate all the time. Any given day I spend time measuring it and crying about it.
I have a similar problem with my arms, I am 6'1" and with a very big build in the chest and am very strong, but the average arm length for guys my age is about 17 inches while my arms are only 14in....honestly it makes me more subconscious than I will even let people realize because I know how much girls find big strong arms attractive, so I woul refrain from thickening my arms because I feard it would make them look even SHORTER...I want this surgery so bad!
@redhot663 I seriously think my friend needs this because his left leg is two and a half inches shorter than his right and he has to wear special shoes to correct his balance problem and so that his hip won't pop.
This surgery may be fine for those who need it, like the young man in this doc, but at 5'4" I wouldn't even get this surgery at gunpoint - I'd take a bullet first!
A point to keep in mind: when Michael Jackson was getting his unnecessary plastic surgery, he got the best that money can buy. Spend your money on a gym membership instead.
Don't say it like it's a bad thing. That's the same height as Muggsy Bogues, who made it into the NBA despite enormous (height)prejudice against him. Let me know the next time a 7' tall guy makes it onto an Olympic gymnastics team despite no height prejudice against him.
Mahatma Gandhi was 5'3" and look how many people look up to him! And, for what it's worth, the strongest pound for pound guys I've met tend to be no more than 5'6" and I've met a lot of strong people and amazing athletes.
I'm 6'0 but when I get the money I'm having this operation and YES people my height can have this operation. I CAN'T STAND WOMEN TALLER THAN ME! REALLY PISSES ME OFF!
you're full of shit you're 6 foot and want to be taller!! I'm only 5'5" and I want this surgery just to be 5"9" which is perfect for me but like for CRYING OUT LOUD you're 6 FOOT TALL!!!! I won't even ever get to be that tall which I don't want to be anyway..
