First time I heard this was last week at the Lyle Lovett / John Hiatt concert in Nashville. I was sitting there with tears streaming down my face and have no idea what hit me about it--but it still does and probably always will.
Can't say it there (comments disabled), so I'll say it here.
The other YouTube video of this song -- combined with a montage of old home movie cuts -- is a Masterpiece.
Just moving as all getout.
A glimpse of family life in the 50's and 60's that seems strikingly familiar to folks my age -- combined with glimpses of loved ones who've since passed.
I'm right there with you!! I had a spiritual experience listening to it for the first time. Lyle has a way of picking you up and placing you right back down wherever he wants you to be!! If somewhere in my career I can become half the songwriter and performer he is, I will die a happy, happy man.
I agree also, North Dakota was up there for many many years. We have a family ranch in the middle of Oklahoma. There is nothing more I like to do is walk the pasture and listen this.
You're welcome, and thanks for posting this video. I love this song and have been going crazy trying to get a copy of it since I first heard Lyle play it last September in Chicago.
That's okay. smallfry had originally posted the video under the name, "Mother Maria" prior to the release of the CD, and in the interest of correctness, I gave him the proper info regarding this great song.

i agree! lyle lovett is one of the few artists that can bring this grown man to tears with the beauty of his music. patty griffin is another one.

this is now my favorite lyle lovett song. after 15 great years at the top, "north dakota" is now a very respectable 2nd.

The name of this song is really, 'South Texas Girl', not 'Mother Maria'. It will be on Lyle's new CD, due out on 8/28/07.

Yes, I think we determined that about four months ago.

Oh I'm sorry I misread, thought you said it was called Mother Maria, my mistake.
