OMG! Can remember them playing this, on Saturday club, in the sixty's! Ringo used a suitcase, to drum on, for some reason. Im 65 & 3/4, what a memory!
@alexreidr I think you hit it right on the head. This was one of their heroes and they gave it their all. This song fit them perfectly. Both versions are pretty similar, and of similarly very high quality. It seems pretty unreasonable to say one is "way better" than the other.
This is one of the best covers of any Holly songs ever - when I first heard it years ago, it brought me back to Holly's music. Holly was an American music genius - an equal to Lennon-McCartney, Brian Wilson and any other great songwriter that the following decades produced. Imagine what his body of work would be if he were still living?
Of course the Beatles version is better than the the original they covered, the voices are sweeter than honey; it reminds me another great song they covered better than the original “You Really Got a Hold on Me”. Paul McCartney with his voice sweeter than honey is Godsend. Thank God Paul didn't create "Imagine no possessions..." while he would keep all his possessions like the other one ha, ha, ha; or create"Give Peace a Chance" on a J-160E guitar made of an environment protected Mahogany Tree!
It's a coin flip as to whether this cover song or the Lennon/McCartney song "I'm Down" , which in case you haven't noticed sounds similar to the song "O Boy" is the better indication of how much of an influence Buddy Holly was to the Beatles. They even got the idea for their name from the Crickets.
never been a big fan of the beatles, but the songs they cover have always been better to me than the originals believe it or not. WAY better than their own songs(hater? no. just preference). but in this case buddy holly wins. nobody does buddy holly better than buddy holly. still good though.
a beautiful song, a beautiful composition, rendered beautifully by The Beatles. just listen to the harmonies and the sound like double guitar playing of george, AMAZING.
I LOVE Buddy Holly and it's this song that brought me to him. I'm a Beatlemaniac from that 1st Ed Sullivan Show in '64 (I was just 13), and that moment opened the floodgates to the most wonderful music ever made - & that includes the Beates themselves, the music that influenced them, the other British artists we'd have never otherwise heard & the music they inspired others to create after them, which continues even today, if you can find it amongst the noise. Good music is good music. Period.
The one thing that the Beatles Had Was George Martin. George Martin played a very big part in what went on with the Beatles. Maybe Elvis would have been different if George had been apart of his music career. Elvis was an American artist and The Beatles are British. So there must of been some difference in musical back grounds to some extent. I totaly like like the Beatles way more than Elvis myself. But i do like some of Elvis's songs too. George Martin is a big factor.

Well, I like to agree with you when you say Buddy Invented Rock & Roll. But its not right to give Bubby Holly all the credit for Rock & Roll. It astounds me to this day that there are people out there who don't like The Beatles. I feel like if they don't like The Beatles, then they don't appreciate music very much. Its the same thing as telling a metal fan that if you don't like Slayer, then you're not a heavy metal fan very much.
This song reminds me of being a little girl and discovering the Beatles and that funny feeling when you realize that boys are ... intriguing. Back when sweet and sexy went together in the most natural way. It's heartbreaking how much I loved them back then, especially John who fascinated me. Still does.
Buddy Holly invented this sound. He had no blueprint, he had no rock artist to copy. The Beatles took rock to another level, but they'd just shake their heads sadly at anyone who said their version of "Words of Love" was better than Buddy Holly's. The Beatles weren't trying to best Buddy, they were paying homage to him - crediting him as a source of inspiration.
@ocduff In that case they couldn't help making a better version, at least it sounds better than Buddy Holly's to me. The merit is surely Buddy's for writing the song, but the Beatles took it to another level.
@ocduff They very closely follow what Buddy Holly actually recorded. Like you said they lived it up a bit with modern technology at the time and made a good recording of it. Buddy did a very good job on this song. Beatles can only get so close. It was better in their own way as it was to Buddy. I listen to both versions a lot so I am drawn to hearing the differences.
@ocduff the Beatles were huge fans of Buddy Holly, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Everly Bros...the founders of rock and roll. When John was trying to name his group he thought Crickets would have been such a great name for an English group, but of course that was taken by Buddy Holly and the Crickets. So being the witty chap he was, he turned one insect name into another...beetles, but spelled Beatles, as a pun on what was then called music with a beat, or beat music.
@dazza2610 I didnt mean on this song I ment overall in popularity, not on comparison of the covers of Buddy's songs, lose a grip and chill, and you know what everbodys thinks? Music is subjective, you cant say everyone likes Buddy Hollys version better its all opinions, if everyone thought the same the music today wouldnt be so shit
@dazza2610 I will say it again Im talking about popularity as an artist, not the song, and I dont know who's version was more popular for sure, but I researched it and this wasnt a hit for Buddy Holly, and The Diamonds covered it getting into the billboard hot 100 as #13, but as an artist The Beatles out ranked Buddy Holly easily, Im not saying Buddy Holly is less talented than The Beatles, Im just saying The Beatles were more popular.
@CoIeStones say it again? lol thats not what you said u said and im paraphrasing, the beatles didnt mean their version of words of love to be more popular than buddys, thats just the way it turned out, ur clearly commenting on the song ?, and of course they were because buddy holly died 2 years into his career he made 2 years worth of songs and then he was killed, do you think if the beatles had been around for only 2 years they would have had the same impact? erm no of course not
@CoIeStones hey Dumbass The Reason they outranked Buddy Holly Is Because they're career lasted 10! years buddy Holly"s Career Only lasted 18 months & Buddy Holly is STILL better The Beatles even said he is! If all the beatles members were alive and saw your comment they'd say No they're arent better because they knew they couldn't be that good And They Almost did.
@Evileddiex123 Im the dumbass learn how to write fag, and The Beatles didnt record their first album until March 22 1963, so thats when they started their career, and they stopped recording as a band in 1969, so it was really 6 years. And if you only count the same time Buddy Holly had, The Beatles sold more stuff and were WAY more popular, The Beatles are ranked as #1 Greatest artist(s) of all time, Buddy Holly was a really good artist, but he would have NEVER surrpassed The Beatles.
@Evileddiex123 And anyways The Beatles made the revolution in music, Buddy Holly, beach boys and other various artists alot of they're songs were similar, The Beatles were so popular because they invented so much new stuff and got out of the dullness of music at that time they have such a variety in songs unlike Buddy Holly which uses almost the same chords in his songs, I play alot of Buddy Holly and The Beatles, and Buddy Holly uses the chords D, E, A, G atleast one apppear in every song.
@CoIeStones OKAY do you have something wrong With you? THE ONLY reason People Like The Beatles better than Buddy Holly Is Because they made more Song's then him & they liked them (Not Better than Buddy Holly's Song they just liked them) & since they're were no Rock 'N' Roll Artist Around (Chuck Berry Got Arrested, Elvis went in the army, Buddy Holly Ritchie Valens & J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson Died in a plane crash while on tour going to north dakota.
@Evileddiex123 Wow do you read you're messages before you send them? You have really bad grammer, you sound like a fucking mexican attempting english. And like I said before The Beatles were more popular than Buddy Holly, I didnt say they were better, fucking learn how to read and write before you talk to me immigrant. And Chuck Berry and Elvis were around after The Beatles break up, and The Beatles got out of the dullness of rock and roll, they didnt start it.
@CoIeStones Elvis was a douche. He didn't even write his own stuff, he was just a show off! He was so insecure when The Beatles got popular that he even tried to kick them out of America. That's a really fucked up thing to do but he failed obviously..
Right on dude! I've often said Elvis sucked. I know I will be shot down in flames for saying it, but I'm entitled to my opinion and that's it. He had hardly any real rock songs. Most of his hits were love songs that turned on the girls. True the Beatles also had love songs and they were mostly adored by girls, but their talent way surpasses anything Elvis put out, and they rocked (in comparrison). Also; Buddy Holly rocked too. He's the true "king of rock & roll."
@CoIeStones as ocduff says buddy holly had no blue print to copy, he was more influential than the beatles were in the sense of he layed the bricks for artists like them to write songs like they did, the beatles were only playing what was in their record collection, i hardly think you can use the fact he wasnt as succesfull overall as the beatles when they made all those albums and were around for 2 decades whe he was only around for 3 years
@ocduff Actually The Beatles were from 1963-1969, I dont know where you got the extra 14 years from..., and Buddy Holly's amount of time compared to The Beatles and how much songs they wrote, The Beatles wrote way more songs in the end if you do the math, The Beatles may have been influenced by Buddy Holly, but they made the revolution in music happen and The Beatles have so much more diversity compared to Buddy Holly, I play alot of Buddy Holly songs and he uses the same chords almost always
@CoIeStones 1961-1970. the Beatles Formed in 1958 and became popular & Famous in 1961 & Buddy Holly would've Been bigger than the Beatles but sadly he died in 1959 in a plane crash. Buddy Holly's career only lasted at least 2 years & those years were the Best years of his life.
@Evileddiex123 The Beatles the band didnt form until the end of 1962, they had other band members and different band names playing at clubs, they became The Beatles when they went to record for George Martin Please Please Me, but George Martin didnt like Pete Best's drumming, so they got Ringo, thats when they became The Beatles, not 1958, and they announced their break up after they stopped recording together, so they stopped in 1969, research before you say anything go watch the Anthology
Wrong, they became "The Beatles" in 1960, although they sometimes called themselves the Beetles or the Silver Beatles for a few months. Their name was certainly settled by the time they went down to London.
@anonUK They were a band before the 60s, and they officially became The Beatles after their first release... so WRONG, go check when they first sold their album Please Please Me, they were a band before the 60s, but they were "The Beatles" after their first release
CoIeStones, no, In 1957 McCartney meets Lennon in his group ''The Quarrymen'', then he joins and broughts Harrison then the other members go out until Lennon, McCartney & Harrison are the only members, and for 3 years (1957-1960) they pass from The Quarrymen to the Long John and The Silver Beetles and The Silver Beetles, then finally in 1960 they change the name to The Beatles, but they don't get a contract until 1962 with EMI, and then their first single, Love Me Do, is released in late 1962.
@TheOneBeatleManiac And did you read my message? I said they became The Beatles technically after their first release, and I didnt say anything about the names being different before The Beatles, so why are you telling me everything I already know...?
Lovely cover of old Buddy Holly song by the Beatles. They were geniuses in their musical tastes of other artist as well as their own works. Did they ever cover a Bob Dylan song I know they were friends with him?
One of the greatest tributes to the great man - 53 years ago today RIP.
In heaven I can picture Buddy apologising to John and George for never having heard their music...
"No worries," they'd reply, "We heard you."

Back when sweet and sexy went together in the most natural way. It's heartbreaking how much I loved them back then, especially John who fascinated me. Still does.
phaedraface 1 year ago
That is not true. I love Buddy Holly. He is amazing.

John and George are evident here, but not Paul. Is this three-part harmony, or the only recorded duet between Harrison and Lennon?
finian99 1 year ago
@finian99 No, that's John (the low voice) and Paul (the higher one).

The Beatles back in the days when they used to do REAL ROCK AND ROLL!
BobbyDelRiv 1 year ago
Buddy Holly invented this sound. He had no blueprint, he had no rock artist to copy. The Beatles took rock to another level, but they'd just shake their heads sadly at anyone who said their version of "Words of Love" was better than Buddy Holly's. The Beatles weren't trying to best Buddy, they were paying homage to him - crediting him as a source of inspiration.
ocduff 1 year ago 79
@ocduff In that case they couldn't help making a better version, at least it sounds better than Buddy Holly's to me. The merit is surely Buddy's for writing the song, but the Beatles took it to another level.
Helmut83 1 year ago
@ocduff They very closely follow what Buddy Holly actually recorded. Like you said they lived it up a bit with modern technology at the time and made a good recording of it. Buddy did a very good job on this song. Beatles can only get so close. It was better in their own way as it was to Buddy. I listen to both versions a lot so I am drawn to hearing the differences.

ThePiolo83 1 year ago
@ocduff the Beatles were huge fans of Buddy Holly, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Everly Bros...the founders of rock and roll. When John was trying to name his group he thought Crickets would have been such a great name for an English group, but of course that was taken by Buddy Holly and the Crickets. So being the witty chap he was, he turned one insect name into another...beetles, but spelled Beatles, as a pun on what was then called music with a beat, or beat music.
ITILII 1 year ago
@ocduff The Beatles were not trying to be better than Buddy Holly, thats just the way it turned out
CoIeStones 11 months ago
@CoIeStones get a grip nobody thinks this version is better than buddy holly's, they certainly didnt
dazza2610 11 months ago
@dazza2610 I didnt mean on this song I ment overall in popularity, not on comparison of the covers of Buddy's songs, lose a grip and chill, and you know what everbodys thinks? Music is subjective, you cant say everyone likes Buddy Hollys version better its all opinions, if everyone thought the same the music today wouldnt be so shit
CoIeStones 11 months ago
@CoIeStones i say people as in the majority? is it not a fact most people including the beatles dont say this is a better version?
dazza2610 11 months ago
@dazza2610 I will say it again Im talking about popularity as an artist, not the song, and I dont know who's version was more popular for sure, but I researched it and this wasnt a hit for Buddy Holly, and The Diamonds covered it getting into the billboard hot 100 as #13, but as an artist The Beatles out ranked Buddy Holly easily, Im not saying Buddy Holly is less talented than The Beatles, Im just saying The Beatles were more popular.
CoIeStones 11 months ago
@CoIeStones say it again? lol thats not what you said u said and im paraphrasing, the beatles didnt mean their version of words of love to be more popular than buddys, thats just the way it turned out, ur clearly commenting on the song ?, and of course they were because buddy holly died 2 years into his career he made 2 years worth of songs and then he was killed, do you think if the beatles had been around for only 2 years they would have had the same impact? erm no of course not
dazza2610 11 months ago
@CoIeStones hey Dumbass The Reason they outranked Buddy Holly Is Because they're career lasted 10! years buddy Holly"s Career Only lasted 18 months & Buddy Holly is STILL better The Beatles even said he is! If all the beatles members were alive and saw your comment they'd say No they're arent better because they knew they couldn't be that good And They Almost did.
Evileddiex123 11 months ago
@Evileddiex123 Im the dumbass learn how to write fag, and The Beatles didnt record their first album until March 22 1963, so thats when they started their career, and they stopped recording as a band in 1969, so it was really 6 years. And if you only count the same time Buddy Holly had, The Beatles sold more stuff and were WAY more popular, The Beatles are ranked as #1 Greatest artist(s) of all time, Buddy Holly was a really good artist, but he would have NEVER surrpassed The Beatles.
CoIeStones 11 months ago
@Evileddiex123 And anyways The Beatles made the revolution in music, Buddy Holly, beach boys and other various artists alot of they're songs were similar, The Beatles were so popular because they invented so much new stuff and got out of the dullness of music at that time they have such a variety in songs unlike Buddy Holly which uses almost the same chords in his songs, I play alot of Buddy Holly and The Beatles, and Buddy Holly uses the chords D, E, A, G atleast one apppear in every song.
CoIeStones 11 months ago
@CoIeStones OKAY do you have something wrong With you? THE ONLY reason People Like The Beatles better than Buddy Holly Is Because they made more Song's then him & they liked them (Not Better than Buddy Holly's Song they just liked them) & since they're were no Rock 'N' Roll Artist Around (Chuck Berry Got Arrested, Elvis went in the army, Buddy Holly Ritchie Valens & J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson Died in a plane crash while on tour going to north dakota.
Evileddiex123 11 months ago
@Evileddiex123 Wow do you read you're messages before you send them? You have really bad grammer, you sound like a fucking mexican attempting english. And like I said before The Beatles were more popular than Buddy Holly, I didnt say they were better, fucking learn how to read and write before you talk to me immigrant. And Chuck Berry and Elvis were around after The Beatles break up, and The Beatles got out of the dullness of rock and roll, they didnt start it.
CoIeStones 11 months ago
@CoIeStones Elvis was a douche. He didn't even write his own stuff, he was just a show off! He was so insecure when The Beatles got popular that he even tried to kick them out of America. That's a really fucked up thing to do but he failed obviously..
kreeepyy 9 months ago
@kreeepyy I agree he should have wrote his own songs, he doesnt deserve the title "King of Rock"
CoIeStones 9 months ago
@kreeepyy
PAULNIEM 9 months ago
@CoIeStones as ocduff says buddy holly had no blue print to copy, he was more influential than the beatles were in the sense of he layed the bricks for artists like them to write songs like they did, the beatles were only playing what was in their record collection, i hardly think you can use the fact he wasnt as succesfull overall as the beatles when they made all those albums and were around for 2 decades whe he was only around for 3 years
dazza2610 11 months ago
@ocduff Actually The Beatles were from 1963-1969, I dont know where you got the extra 14 years from..., and Buddy Holly's amount of time compared to The Beatles and how much songs they wrote, The Beatles wrote way more songs in the end if you do the math, The Beatles may have been influenced by Buddy Holly, but they made the revolution in music happen and The Beatles have so much more diversity compared to Buddy Holly, I play alot of Buddy Holly songs and he uses the same chords almost always
CoIeStones 11 months ago
@CoIeStones 1961-1970. the Beatles Formed in 1958 and became popular & Famous in 1961 & Buddy Holly would've Been bigger than the Beatles but sadly he died in 1959 in a plane crash. Buddy Holly's career only lasted at least 2 years & those years were the Best years of his life.
Evileddiex123 11 months ago
@Evileddiex123 The Beatles the band didnt form until the end of 1962, they had other band members and different band names playing at clubs, they became The Beatles when they went to record for George Martin Please Please Me, but George Martin didnt like Pete Best's drumming, so they got Ringo, thats when they became The Beatles, not 1958, and they announced their break up after they stopped recording together, so they stopped in 1969, research before you say anything go watch the Anthology
CoIeStones 11 months ago
@CoIeStones
Wrong, they became "The Beatles" in 1960, although they sometimes called themselves the Beetles or the Silver Beatles for a few months. Their name was certainly settled by the time they went down to London.
anonUK 11 months ago
@anonUK They were a band before the 60s, and they officially became The Beatles after their first release... so WRONG, go check when they first sold their album Please Please Me, they were a band before the 60s, but they were "The Beatles" after their first release
CoIeStones 11 months ago
CoIeStones, no, In 1957 McCartney meets Lennon in his group ''The Quarrymen'', then he joins and broughts Harrison then the other members go out until Lennon, McCartney & Harrison are the only members, and for 3 years (1957-1960) they pass from The Quarrymen to the Long John and The Silver Beetles and The Silver Beetles, then finally in 1960 they change the name to The Beatles, but they don't get a contract until 1962 with EMI, and then their first single, Love Me Do, is released in late 1962.
TheOneBeatleManiac 11 months ago
@TheOneBeatleManiac And did you read my message? I said they became The Beatles technically after their first release, and I didnt say anything about the names being different before The Beatles, so why are you telling me everything I already know...?

CoIeStones, because they were officialy Beatles in 1960 not 1962.

Lovely cover of old Buddy Holly song by the Beatles. They were geniuses in their musical tastes of other artist as well as their own works. Did they ever cover a Bob Dylan song I know they were friends with him?
