how do you set up the back side of the tech 21 ( eq ), because i having a problem with my sound the line 6 hd 500 sound very good by headphones but when i connected to the tech21 sound much diferent. can you please send me the combination setting in equalizer in both pod hd500 and tech 21.
Could you please tell me, or demo, how the acoustic sounds of a jtv variax sound through the pod hd into the power engine, as compared to an acoustic jtv->pod hd-> high end frfr speakers?
4 of these would be better than a 4x12 because you can fine tune the speaker for more midrange twang or more metal lag type caractoristics. I can wait to expierment with some different speaker types and see how they react to the pw's eq. Its almost like fine tuning a cabinet or having different cabinet simulations but better because you can dial exactly the sound you want.
He probably used direct. I use stack power amp. Because I switch between the pw60 and my stack. Its hard to explain but the pw60's eq doesn't really color your tone going in. It adjusts the caractoristics of the pw60's speaker. Its amazing the flexability the pw60 gives you tone wise. All the fine adjustments you've been trying to get with your processor and couldn't the pw60 will do. I'm personally gonna get 3 more for a personal halfstack. I boosted my pods amp 6db and run the pw at half vol.
BIG QUESTION HERE! What setting was used for this video? I'm getting one of these soon, so I'm wondering... did he use Direct/Studio or Combo Pwr Amp for this demo?
I read on the internet the frequency range of the pe60 is 60hz-5k. Its not a true frfr unit but everyone who owns a podhd500 seams to be very happy with it. I may get it and throw in a eminance manowar speaker. Its spl rating is 4db higher than the pe60's seventy/80 celestion and would be better for metal.
I'm really thinking the power engine might be the way to go. You can boost the amp output on your pod 12db. And connect a patch chord in the pods fx loop for more gain. With a little tweeking the tech 21 pe would be pretty loud. 60watts is only 3db quieter than a 120watt amp. Its the efficiency of your watts that matter.
I'm wondering if anyone has thought of running their podhd500 into a art sla1 power amp into a 200 watt stereo 4x12 cabinet. The impedance of the speakers and amp would match perfect at 8ohms with no preamp coloration.
This doesn't sound as a DI sound. Which is to be expected from the seventy/80 speaker. Same with my pod XT/power engine I had. The only way to go was the combo power amp mode or employ a full range speaker.
how do i have to setup my amp settings on the amp i plugged this baby in? like gain, bass,midle....... the clean amps sound really nice but the hi gain amps just sound awful
@voxac30blues You plug into one of the PE's and use the XLR out into the XLR in on the 2nd PE. Balance the volume between the two by adjusting each amps volume. You can keep adding PE's in the same manner and there is no limit to the number that you can chain together. I am using two of the 4X10 models in stereo with my HD500 and am thinking about getting the 1X12 to use as a monitor. PE's are light weight and can take a beating. Sold all my tube amps and couldn't be happier.
@M3NTA7 You could always hook up headphones into the pod. Or turn the master volume on your pod way down if you really want to play out of the power engine.
@Zhorellski The Power Engine is meant to amplify a guitar where as the qsc k10 is designed to amplify sound across an entire space. Volume is a major factor onstage as you have mics and other things to deal with, so having a 60 watt "speaker" vs. a 1000 watt "speaker" is ideal. The P.E. also has variable eq where as most loudspeakers don't (the qsc has fixed presets, i believe).
@Zhorellski If you're playing in a band situation (such as on a church worship team), an amp such as the tech 21 power engine or the line 6 dt50 (which was designed to work in conjunction with the pod hd's) would be the way to go. If you're performing live in a barebones garage rock setting where the only things running through the p.a. are the vocals and bass drum, you could either use a loudspeaker, daisy chain a few of the power engines, or get the line 6 dt50 with 4x12.
I just ordered a Tech 21 Power Engine after viewing this video. I have a HD500, been going through my pa monitors, cuz my amp hurts my tone. I love what's coming out of my monitor, but I share the same mix with my singer. Because of lack of PA gear and monitor mixes, I think this added quality stage volume will make me a happy camper. I might even get a 2nd one so I can spread them in stereo, and have 3 sources of sound feeding my ears to have a consistant volume all over my area of the stage
Ok, I asked this in another place too, but it's always good to get a second opinion:
How far will the PowerEngine's 60 watts get you?
By the way: IMHO this setup (recorded, in this very clip) sounds worse than the couple of direct recordings of the POD that I've heard so far. But maybe it's just bad mic'ing and sounds fine live in the room.
@Thazzmaname In this case I think it would be better to use a power amp, sounds too much like the direct sound but yeah that's usually a little bit nicer lol.
@sickink2 I've settled on Direct/Studio Mode out from my POD500 to my PE60 too. I've found distortion/overdrive sounds too raw and digital with it set to Combo Power Amp. I'm using the 1/4" out with the output level set to Line to give the hottest possible signal, then I have the PE60 volume set low - this is giving me the minimum amount of hum.
I been looking at a PE instead of dropping a ton of $ on the DT50 . .was hoping anyone had experience using either or . . . besides the weight factor . .lol . . . just hoping the Pod isn't typical Line 6 harsh and brittle distortion.
This is just awesome for live users. Finally something versatile with a ton of options in a compact size. Your getting TONS of rigs with this 30lb cabinet getting it's tone from a pedalboard you would be using anyways. I'm impressed. I just wonder to go with the HD500 or the Eleven Rack.

The Eleven Rack was nice but for the money i think you better with the RP. if you play live with the eleven rack you still need to buy a pedal board, so by the time your done your looking at over $1000. I also think the RP has amp models with more balls. Just my opinion in case you were wondering about the two
@AndrewBordoni Use studio mode. The Power Engine isn't FRFR, but its range is still much wider than a regular guitar amp (more than wide enough for amplifying guitar tones). If you use the combo or stack modes, you're going to get flubby bass and horrible, hissy highs. I use a HD500 and PE, and studio mode is the way to go, definitely.
@sickink2 what are these different 'modes' you speak of?I thought you simply had your two ouput(amp and line) modes, and the choice whether or not to turn the cabs on or off....????I am kinda lost on this baby so far
@MrFox7stringking Long press the View button to the left of the screen on the POD, and use the arrow buttons to scroll until you find the output mode setting. You'll have these choices: "studio/direct," "combo front," "combo pwramp," "stack front," and "stack pwramp." You want studio/direct, which enables the mic models and properly voices the cab sims. Turn the 1/4" output setting to line (instead of amp). Now start tweaking a new patch and experience tonal bliss!
@AndrewBordoni You definitely do not want to use Studio/Direct settings. You only want to use that if you are going direct to the PA or if you are recording direct. I use the Combo Pwr amp. That or the Stack pwr amp will give you the best results. The problem with the hd500 is that it doesn't have dual output settings. For example, I played a show with the hd400 last night. I went "combo pwr amp" to my PE and "studio" to the PA. You can't do that with the hd500 forcing you to mic the PE.
@tighttritenight If the studio/direct setting doesn't sound right to you, it's probably because you dialed your patches in using a different setting. The Power Engine is designed to reproduce all the modeling (amps, cabs, and mics) without coloring it. It's true, a patch dialed in on one mode will sound bad on another, but I'm able to dial in better patches with studio/direct mode. In the power amp modes there is a high-end hiss that I can't dial out.
@sickink2 Unfortunately, however, it does color your tone. Believe me, I switched to a true FRFR setup (QSC K10) and I'm now able to utilize the studio/direct mode with ease. Tone is definitely subjective, but I'm not alone in using the "live" settings on the POD with the Power Engine. Lets face it, the Power Engine is still just a regular guitar amp without a preamp. It may be a flatter response than a traditional guitar amp, but its still going to add quite a bit of color to your patches.
@tighttritenight I'm not saying it's true FRFR — I know it isn't — I'm just saying it's flat enough and the range is wide enough to give a fairly accurate reproduction of the fully modeled sound. It probably wouldn't work with extended-range instruments, but guitar sounds have a pretty narrow range, and the PE seems to cover that just fine. All I can say is, I've tried every output mode, and I stuck with the poweramp modes for a while but could not get them to sound good.
@sickink2 Yes! That´s right! I use a Digitech RP500 in direct mode , with my power engine and that´s the way to go. I´ve tried other ways but the tone becomes too loose and there is the high end hiss. Don´t forget that the power engine was also designed for use with the direct xlr output of the (great) trademark 60 combo ;)
Sorry about my bad english. Greetings from Portugal!
@AndrewBordoni I forgot to mention: use the xlr out, not the 1/4" out. I think thats what the other guy was using. I've tried all of the different settings and the xlr out with the pwr combo amp works best for me. Again, experiment with different settings. Tech 21 also recommends using the "xlr in" on their Power Engines.

It wouldn't be a power engine if it had tubes. Tubes color the sound, this is designed to be transparent and let your gear's tone shine through.
It would be the ideal amp for the new pod HD's if they didn't already have the DT50.
