@CanadianReich Then something was already wrong with the baby birds. Birds DO NOT have a sense of smell, and unless you damaged them in some way, the mother would have taken them back.
@TheMuffinBurgler I never mentioned smell. All I know is that every baby bird ive ever touched was never looked after by its mother and died. Mind you I was a kid so the bird was likely on the ground to start with. Perhaps it fell of of its nest.
I currently have a baby one of these in my bedroom... It fell 3 stories from my condo roof and has been with me for 3 days. I barely has feathers and is very tiny. Eyes are open and getting stronger every day.
You can touch them thats a myth about the parents abandoning them if they smell humans on them. Birds don't have ability to smell they reli on their hearing and eyesight. But if you bother the nest alot they will abandon it more so with red birds they're very shy.
You can get chicken wire the kind they put on the bottom of rabbits cages. Make a rectangular box out of it about 6 inches long. So it looks like a little small cage or a long tube. And attach it over the hole. I cut the ends and spread them out and attach it with flathead screws. Chickadees are athletic enough to get in and out but sparrows can't, also it keeps racoons out. They can't reach in. I do it for blue birds too.
@stayAU says also its not the House Sparrow that takes over their nests its the English Sparrow. They're mean I've watched them drag out helpless nude baby wrens out of the nest.
This is priceless! I wish I had one! They're so precious and I love to hear/listen to them throughout the day. I never heard of these Chickadees until I moved from Chicago to the east coast, and am glad to see just how friendly they are...even more, how gentle you were while handling this lil' one. I've bred cockatiels for years, and although many find it hard to believe, the mama & papa (Joey & Chloe) actually sit on my hand to participate w/my hand-feedings. Thank you for sharing! :)
Thanks for your comments. The birds are checking out the box again and I'm sure thinking about having more babies! We're just hoping the babies won't jump out of the box prematurely again. It's a scary world when they're not ready!
@dogsonthego You're welcome! If I had a greenhouse...it would be their haven! When Joey & Chloe had their 1st flock, only 1 baby survived. I heard it tweeting as it was coming out of the egg. I prayed that it would survive (as I didn't know a thing about breeding & never anticipated that it would lead to that). She survived, and I named her baby, but ONLY until she got away! I accidently forgot to latch their cage door & she flew out. I got her back the next a.m., and named her "Miracle" ;)
so cute! I had one in my basement and carefully picked him up and put it in my coat pocket, went outside and released it. He flew to a nearby tree. So cute
Thanks for your note. I was just thinking the other day that spring will be rolling around (not a moment too soon) and that the chickadees will be checking out the real estate again. I hope the babies will stay put next time until they're ready!
@tylorh26 ......I think these birds have to be friendly......they're practically defenseless......these birds nest in tiny tree cavities that only the mating chickadees can get in and out of.......otherwise they'll get their heads pecked in and they're babies get killed and eggs get pecked by House Sparrows........birdhouses with chickadees have to be monitored constantly and the hole for the nestbox should be 1 1/8 inch in diameter to keep House Sparrows out.
"He's got..."*cut* what did you say next, I need to know!!!!!

@IndigoCat17 Because it's still fluffy, and unsure of its wings. Also, its little tail feathers aren't fully grown in :)
