  • @yooblues they run 48 18 it's been most of the mash guys "magic number"

  • 9:10 get out of there with that bmx :D

  • The rider at 2:21 stopped pedaling...

  • @biglazydragon he did a skid

  • Anyone know what cog/chainwheel ration schaefer is running? The mans a machine!

  • @Ali4994 i think its around 52-17, i saw that on a comment on one of his vids and the guy seemed pretty sure

  • Look at 3:30, they must be riding serious ratios, that climb on that moderate hill looks vicious... Stay fixed!

  • Auckland looks like such a sweet place to ride. A lot better than Sydney. How many of these guys were riding brakeless?

  • @woggleboggle you bet

  • Is that Rainier Schaefer that won?

  • lol it's been 2 fucking years and nobody has found that first song. fuck you Red Bull for never presenting the artists!

  • @senses71 the song is called Silk Worm and it's by Degrader. It was on a mixtape called "No Stop Free Party volume 2". If you managed to get it somewhere let me know!

  • I assume this was a race without stamping manifests? Not a bad idea, just pick up jenx on the way, keeps it fast.....

  • Blondie has the best bike. 00:21

  • @karlstade how can you "love fixies" when you say riding without brakes or gears cracks you up. first of all track bikes arent meant to have brakes or gears to be alot lighter in the velodrome races...try actually looking up what a fixie is before you criticize the riders

  • @slaking08 Not all "Fixies" are brakeless. And not all fixed gear bikes are track bikes (but all track bikes are fixed gear :P). All fixed gear means is that the drivetrain is fixed. It has nothing to do with anything else on the bike.

And I don't get how people are saying things like "That's how you ride a fixie!" So if you ride fixed you're supposed to ride crazy? LOL I mean if you're safe and know what you're doing, go right ahead! And Rainer Schaefer is the man.. GREAT rider.

  • @PeDDeR27 fixies are usually made from track frames. otherwise...its a conversion. track bikes are usually made into "fixies" and i agree with you on how you dont get when people say "thats how you ride a fixie" i just ride to ride.

  • @slaking08 Exactly!

  • @karlstade no brakes? you understand that fixies are meant to be whitout breaks or gears in the tracks. ppl just have taken them to the streets.. I suggest you find out about things before you go and make statements like ''i love fixies'' cmon.

  • hahahahha that scooter cameraman is sooo crazzyyy , i think he forgott hes not a fixie, while hes filming!! HAHA

  • whats the song called in the beginning?

  • 4:14 ok think i lost him

    4:19 FUCK

  • thats how you fucking ride a fixie! top markss from me :D

  • red bull was more awesome around this time....

  • Rainier Schaefer is the man!!!!!

  • @karlstade i know... i suck at riding a bicycle and if i were to own a fixed gear id keep the damn brakes instead of trying to be one of those idiot kids that try to be "cool" that ride brakeless.

  • Haulin ass !

  • Anyone know the gear ratio/inches of the winner?

  • woohoo auckland!

  • Props to the fucking insane camera man on the the scooter!

  • @8kwest I guess the dude on the scooter would be slightly more illegal than the cyclists?

  • @karistade you do realize that fixed gears were the main bike of choice for bike messengers in urban and city environments, don't know why they chose that particular bike.

  • i heard crickets chirping at the finish line.

  • @karlstade the card is your sponsors like a bike shop or something and yo have brakes there called legs

  • are they serious drivin over my green?

  • Comment removed

  • 0:21 nice couple

  • I am converting my fixie into a single speed bike because braking with my leg wrecked my knees. I wasn't able to commute as agressively as I used to on my geared bike and also when rock climbing I felt pain in odd leg positions on the wall. What do you suggest?

  • @jajajah86 get a front brake?

  • The only thing "epic" about this is the advertising director at redbull. you gather up a few dozen hippies in any alternative sports genre, pay them with ice cold canned energy drinks, and you get 100,000 hits per video. you can have foot ball and baseball, redbull sticks their label on donkey racing and cliff jumping and gets double the exposure.

  • @karlstade

to be honest, i like to ride without brakes because it gives riding fixed a sense of thrill, i know that sounds stupid but if i put on a front or rear brake, riding wouldnt be the same for me :P

  • WHATS THE NAME OF THE 1ST TRACK!?

  • whats the name of the first song... pure awesomeness!

  • @karlstade you love fixed gear bikes, but no gears makes you laugh? isnt that like a contradiciton?

  • Honestly, what is epic about this?

  • full of italian frames......

we do it better .(i'm talkin' about frame)

  • I NEED TO KNOW THE NAME OF THE FIRST SONG

  • who's/what's the name of the track ???

  • Was this at 5am on a Sunday, or are the streets always that quiet in Auckland? Looks like a beautiful city.

  • when will this fad DIEEEEEE, my god

  • @bayislove its not a fad, its a lifestyle

  • @TheLeVanman

c'mon, quit kidding yourself. When you begin to see fixed gear tshirts at urban outfitters, hipster kids all saying they ride fixed gear and becoming a walking American Apparel ad.... you know its a fad.

  • @bayislove really? I see hipster types riding track bikes with a freewheel because "fixed gear is so last year". Does this mean freewheel is becoming a fad? Maybe it already is? Does this mean we can't ride any bikes anymore because then, oh, the horror, someone might think we are hipsters? Do you have any tattoos or piercings? It's a fad. Do you like going to music festivals? It's a fad. Do you watch reality tv? It's a fad. Do you own an iPhone? It's a fad. And so on.

  • @nilo2209 Your point sucks i didn't even comment this video, thats all i have to say i don't want to argue im not a faggot hipster

  • @SteVeYG215 your comment and your grammar sucks. My point rules and you know it. That's why you had to post. Good for you that you are not a faggot hipster. I really needed to know that.

  • @bayislove never ever. It's too addictive. :) When will the combustion engine fad die. Please. It's horrible.

  • I have been riding bikes since I was a kid, commuting etc. I still cannot wrap my head around the idea of riding fast in the traffic without brakes. I mean every time I fail to stop on time because my breaks malfunction I get all scared, I cannot imagine not having breaks at all. remember some people in Cuba did it because they could not afford replacements for brakes... but because it is fashionable? Subcultures are interesting phenomena.

  • @monopita but there is a brake. It's the drivetrain and the rider combined. Maybe you don't understand how a fixie works. An experienced fixie rider will probably stop faster than you and your malfunctioning brakes. It's just a technique.

  • @nilo2209 you are right, It didn't occur to me that you could also pedal backwards, sort of. Still, it will never be as reliable as breaks.

  • @monopita I agree, which is why my fixies have front brakes. I also think riding brakeless is stupid but mostly because of all the negative attention fixies get because of this. People think fixie = brakeless = no stopping = dangerous which is annoying for those of us who like to keep it safe. Also you can indeed go backwards if you practise. It's great fun.

  • @nilo2209 I recently bought a bike with a flip flop hub, currently on single speed config, but I will definitely try the fixed gear at some point. Trying to go backwards sounds difficult though.

  • @monopita you start by learning the different trackstand variations. When practising you may notice a backwards circle is the natural progression. You swing back and forth in a 1/4 circle, then half a circle, 1 circle, 2 circles etc. Then you can start trying to go backwards in a straight line. This is harder than the circles but eventually you will get the hang of it. Have fun. :)

  • @monopita - someone who knows what they are doing can stop just as fast on a fixed gear. Also, fixed gear bicycling has been around for awhile. Check out Sheldon Brown's take on it. Many racing enthusiasts off train with fixies to improve their cadence. I have a fixed gear conversion, a regular geared road bike, and a mountain bike. I love my fixie, I ride it every day, and I am far from a hipster.

  • @anarchopinko I quite like fixies, but your statement is an outright lie.

Slowing using the drivetrain will only utilise grip on the back wheel, not the front. Since the majority of the weight shifts onto the front wheel when slowing down, and thus the balance of the normal forces will be skewed to the front.

There is a reason why the front brake is by far the most effective brake. Under perfect braking, the rear wheel contributes nothing to the slowing of the bike. With a fixie, it's the same

  • @amara01addis - lie? You might think I am wrong but calling me a liar for being wrong is disingenuous. I admit I overstepped a bit here because I do use a front brake on my fixie so when I hear "without brakes" I wrongly assume "without rear brakes". My rear brake is my leg. My apologies.

  • 5:33 guy says fuck this im taking a short cut

  • man the roads out there look lovely.

  • who sings this song??

  • @rdub68 theres no lyrics its a instrumentle

  • @boomkingg why even? don't respond if you don't know the artist.

  • doing some bike customization in Indonesia with affordable cost yo, w w w. tawakalrider .c o m

  • @karlstade a true fixie doesnt have gears there single speed

  • What does it feel like when you have a rear disc does it play with wind too much?

  • looked like fun, but kinda shocked that this redbull sponsored race looked liked a free for all with cyclists blowing through redlights, competing with cars, etc. I wonder what the consequences would have been if a cyclist was run over?

  • 12 people ride bikes with gears and brakes... poor them

  • People should stop complaining about fixed gear bikes being a fad, so what if they are? Last time I checked its still a bicycle and most cyclists would love to see more people riding which is exactly what fixed gears have done.

  • Who is the artist of the first song played?

    DOPE.

    Lovin' my fixie.

  • @sr20d2fourt bad word...that song is Epic

  • @kissmarton

been a while since I've logged into this acct. Song name by chance? Thank you Kissmarton!

  • that was fast

for there not being sheep at the finish line

  • Comment removed

  • @sh4ne I too enjoy embracing idiotic fads!

  • @karlstade and no need to make a sweeping genaralazation of fixie riders.

  • @karlstade just cause you cant ride fixie worth a fuck dose'nt mean everyone else blows like you,or has no clue like you.

  • 4:24 that guy must do that everyday.

  • how many miles was this round trip?

  • @treefilly Roughly 10km The centre of Auckland is tiny.

  • Awesome... Have a cheap racer and been debating over a fixie... This may have made my mind up... Looking to get a Trek District 2010. Carbon Chain plus fixed gears will be an amazing experience..

  • awesome vid, awesome bikes, I want more!.

  • Normal people riding brakeless is pretty stupid; but the guy who won this is the nuts, he's probably more controlled brakeless than most fixie riders would be with brakes.

Pulling off fixie skids at that speed takes alot of skill...Ya see him doing it before changing course; just an awesome rider, wouldn't surprise me if he was a pro track rider or something!!

  • Red Bull Eye in Sky coming to Los Angeles this looks fun

  • look carefully he skid

  • song name!?!?!?!

  • at 5:49 he's freewheeling. wtf?

  • @SkullAndDragon it was a skid. he slowed down before he crossed the crossroad. you can see the spokes stop moving. :|:|

  • @SkullAndDragon no, he skid.

  • @SkullAndDragon he locked up the backwheel, you can see the spokes stop moving

  • @stcywll that is why they call it a fixed gear

  • @SkullAndDragon he skid look carefully

  • @SkullAndDragon His skidding -0- !

  • @SkullAndDragon nahhh, hes just skidding to slow down a little

  • @SkullAndDragon He isn't freewheeling, he is locking up his back wheel and skidding.

  • I like how they cut through the grass.

  • @Deadngone51o haaha yeah i thought that was funny

  • nice beat! who is it?

  • that looks so fun... damn...

  • How did Redbull get away with this? It looks like a half sanctioned race / half alleycat. Cool aerial views. I wish we could get a heli to film Chicago races!

  • that looks crazy dangerous. Open traffic and going that fast? damn. I'm pretty sure some of them may have broken a law or two, but it's still cool nevertheless.

  • GIVE HIM A MAN HUG!

  • What idiot would spend the money to put hed wheels on a fixed gear.

  • 0:22 >.<

  • vvvv its funny how youtubers actualy waste their time arguing. how abut you guys meet up and kill each other

  • does anyone know the name to the song that's playing??

  • I see a lot of expensive, high-end store-bought fixies in this video. Whatever happened to finding an old ten-speed or mountain bike and converting them?

  • @420witchdoctor Problem is that in NZ decent old frames are rare as hens teeth. So it is easier to buy a new track frame and build that up. Plus that way you get a manufacturers warranty, which is handy as even hand made frames assembled by pros can fail.

  • @BigTwitchy Yeah man, and straight frames are hard to find up here in Oregon, too. It rains ALL THE TIME up here.

  • i wonder what's the gear ration of the winner

    \

  • @ionfreak93 49/17 I was on 48/17 and found it hard to stop, That extra tooth would have made it that much harder, He was a nice guy but I wasnt willing to follow him through one of the intersections. Plowing straight through reds is'nt my cup of tea, slow down acess the situation and merge or weave not distrupting the traffic. Only the sith deal in absolutes.

  • Rainier Schaefer is a beast!!!

  • Hi, I need some help deciding which bike to buy...

There is this bike called "Balance", it's normal and all, it has many speeds (not fixed gear) and it's nearly 200$.

And a fixed gear bike, very normal, 300$.. I don't know which to choose from.. I guess the fixed wheel might be lighter?

  • @mustang19ms get a fixed gear

    theyre so fun to ride

  • @mustang19ms Yes, fixed gears are ALOT lighter than multiple-geared bicycles.

  • it's like "Global Gutz"

  • so.. red bull organized a race in open traffic - how? seems weird

  • wicked race! anyone know the name of the song?

  • all time fixed

  • they should of gave him a whole set up to go with it..

  • Soundtrack rocks, what is it!???

  • mi viene il mal di mare...ma non riescono a sctre fermi con ste videocamere

  • I wonder if any of them were using Single Speeds

  • @Derekedgerofl all of them were single speed fixed gears?

  • Even though i hate fixies, this was quite awesome

  • @DoingItForTheLawlz Y would u hate fixies had a bad experience champ?? =P

  • @blacksweater334 They just seem to stupid, one speed? Im more into marathon bikes, than 1 speed bikes

  • @DoingItForTheLawlz thats ok to each his own =D... just cuz its one speed doesnt mean u only go one speed... imo riding fixie represents the rider more than the bike

  • @blacksweater334 Its whatevs man

  • @DoingItForTheLawlz I can ride my fixed gear from Portland, OR to Tillamook, OR at the beach in less than 10 hours. You'd do about the same on a marathon bike. Face it, fixed gear riders generally have stronger legs and more stamina, especially those who ride 24/7, like me.

  • @420witchdoctor look i dont fucken care where you can ride your gay ass one speed to a place or to another place. Actually we the road bike, and mountain bike people have better legs than you gay ass fixed gear riders for the fact that we can go up hills and mountains better and more faster. Unlike you who you have a 1 speed 88 bianchi, you sir are going to be a bit tiresome. so STFU.

  • @DoingItForTheLawlz Haha, you're clueless. Think a little better than that, and domestic: 1984 chromoly butted all aluminum (yeah ALUMINUM) Trek 660. And it's funny that you think everything's about speed. It's not. I'll bet I could make it through downtown ANYWHERE alot faster than you. And enough of that "we the people" bullshit. You ain't no Robert King, so enough of the stupid shit. And do you think I don't ride geared bikes? Tell that to my Orange downhill time trial mountain bike.

  • @420witchdoctor your the clueless one. why are you ranting on everybody's comments in this video? Stick your opinions to yourself you fucken shun-in. Im not talking about speed you dumbass, im talking about performance. And why are you telling me all of a sudden that you can go to one place faster than me? You don't even know me so SHUT THE FUCK UP! that easy kid, so move aside troll

  • @DoingItForTheLawlz Don't know you? YOU DON'T KNOW ME, BITCH! Meet up with me in Portland, buddy, see who's talking shit then. I'll hit you in the mouth with my belt buckle, buddy. I wear clothes that fit me correctly, not butt-huggers, I listen to melodic and black metal, and I'm no fucking hipster. You think I'm all about scene because I ride a track bike. Fuck you, fuck your life, and fuck your family, you stupid little poser ass biker bitch boy faggot motherfucker. End rant. I win.

  • @420witchdoctor you make me laugh troll. Why are you giving me this info about yourself, im not of the gay persuasion giving info about myself. I live in California, not in gay ass Seattle. Go ahead hate all you want, your just another person i dont even know, that tries to hate on me and supposedly on my family. SO SHUT THE FUCK UP, IT WILL MAKE ALL OF US SEEING THIS VIDEO MORE PLEASURABLE YOU FUCKEN FAGGOT ASS MUTHER FUCKER THAT RANTS ON EVERYBODYS FUCKEN COMMENTS, GO FUCK YOURSELF YOU FAGGOT.

  • @DoingItForTheLawlz Seattle? You're fucking hilarious. I live on Mount Hood with all the big mountain drinking people, not in gay ass California. You're calling where I live gay, and yhou live in fucking CALIFORNIA?!! Learn a little something about San Fran and Hollywood, buddy. I can see I've struck a chord in you, because now instead of using factual knowledge, you're calling me gay (HAHA!) and degrading to name-calling. My work here is done, you need not respond. Bye bye, have a good life.

  • @DoingItForTheLawlz @420witchdoctor INTRNTS SRS BIDNIZ. really guys. get a fucking life.

also, fuck cali 206 4 life motherfucker!

  • @DoingItForTheLawlz do you realize that some of the best cyclists TRAIN on fixed gear bicycles. riding a fixed bicycle is the best way to train yourself to spin better, faster, and more agile that you ever have. dont knock what you dont know.

  • i give them props attacking a incline on a fix gear.

  • who is this on the track(song

  • the same could be said bout skatin but thats still pretty popular...just sayin...

  • I am not saying it's not cool. It kinda is, and I like fixies, but it ain't good PR racing like this in a traffic

  • i didnt say you were sayin its not cool :D i was just tryin to make a point thats all...flowing with traffic like that its just the thrill of it in a way...

  • @janvarhol But having a properly organised and perhaps legal race would take away the culture of what fixie riding is. It's an underground and very street based thing, this is just keeping it that way, and doing it pretty well.

  • @joehassmallarms Really, I mean if they started properly organizing the scene pretty soon some old French guys would be making up all sorts of rules and shit, probably making everyone ride around on little closed courses without traffic and shit.

Don't let them ruin TRACK BIKE racing!

  • What makes you think this is a race for popularity? A race is a race.

  • would anyone happen to know what rainers gear ratio was?

  • I would guess around the high 80's but i doubt anyone would venture into the 90's or 100.

70 and 80 would of been the average maybe even 60.

  • 6:58 THE CUNT on the scooter, get on the right side of the road !

  • the streets were kinda empty, not as hardcore as other vids on youtube

  • a girl on a fixie!?!?!? hawt

  • what kind of helmets are rainier and the rest of these guys wearing?

  • MASH SF Riders ftw!

  • 0:12 HAHA i got the same shoes! :D

  • RES pect.

    That would be tough.

  • aukland seems cool. i dunno if i just wasnt paying attention, but i didnt hear one car honk.

  • i only heard one car honk, and im pretty sure it was honking at the moped for driving in the wrong lane.

  • Rainier Shaefer gives it 100% on every video i've seen him in, he just rides fast, plain and simple!!!!!

  • i give these guys props love fixies fixed for life

  • that bike at 21 seconds is nice!!!i love fixies!!!

  • i love the way the guy in first does the skid sitting down.... just nice..

  • wow

  • j dilla on the beatsss!

  • ouu come on a fixed gear race that is payed by red bull....fail
