I really like that you put ToA as your top. That was definitely nice to see. You really need to give Dragon Quest VIII a try though. It's , imo, the very best in the series. I actually put off a vacation when that game came out because I couldn't bear to stop half way through.
Shadow Hearts Covenant is the most amazing RPG. . . . . . . that nobody played. Its such a shame. it was one of (my) top video game experiences of my life. Its up there with Metal Gear Solid 1, Chrono Trigger, and Vagrant Story. I loved everything in that Game. The Story was crazy and awesome, yet it didn't take itself too seriously, the characters are all great, the battle system was addictive, and the Music was top notch. If you like rpgs, GO FIND THIS GAME. Alpha for the win!
Okay I have a question for anyone who can answer... out of Tales of Legendia, Dragon Quest 8, Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Dark Cloud...which RPG is the best???
@GalsiaDonovan Out of that list, I would actually have to go with Kingdom Hearts #1. While I loved Dark Cloud and Tales of Legendia, Kingdom Hearts was the biggest surprise I've ever had with a game. I thought that it was going to be really lame when I first got it, and it turned out to be one of my favorites.
As for KH 2, I think I ruined that one for myself by building it up too much over the 5 years I had to wait for it, and I have not gotten a chance to play Dragon Quest 8.
FF12 was the best rpg on ps2 in my opinion. How awesome would it be if they made a FF10 and FF12 HD collection. like the did with ico and the god of war collection and metal gear. The ps2 FF's would look great in HD

@badams2190 ya but why just 10? most of the hd remakes come in collections. i played every final fantasy and 12 was my favorite. i had over 200 hours played and still didn't beat the game, i didn't even get the ultimate weapons yet. game is massive. and the graphics are some of the best on ps2.
@guerillap1mp eh if you buy them from the marketplace they are sold seperate. I understand you loved it, but a ton of us didn't. The game was not nearly as well received. Also, imho even though FFX-2 was pretty bad it would make way more sense for them to bundle that with X over XII. In the long run though I grew up on nes and sega genesis n64 ect. If I have to deal with replaying them on the ps2 I will. Like you said some of the best looking ps2 games out there.
@badams2190 they already ripped me off once for ffx2, i wouldn't let that happen again. that games trash. man, heres a tip if you like the old school genisis and snes and nes games. then you can get them all free. they're freeware and so is the emulators. i remember the website to get all the free snes games was guerillagames com and there is links for the nes and genesis games there. and you can get a free drivers for a ps3 or xbox controller to play them with.

@xSkyHunterr its gigantly meh, the majority of the characters can be blended into eachother from the start of the game due to the unusual leveling up grid thing, some of the fundamental features of the game failed quite badly e.g. you have the ability to run around in combat... but if you move away from the enemy after they start doing a melee attack (as to dodge it) you still get hit anyways.
things like that, a massive disappointment when compared to its former (non-online) games and that list
@xSkyHunterr A lot of people do not like XII because of the radical changes it made from other entries in the series. It took out the traditional summons for more zodiac oriented ones that did not give nearly as much a benefit to acquire. The limit system was more generic, and the entire battle system was changed to match a MMO. In addition, Ashe and Vaan look like rehashes of Yuna and Tidus which bugged a number of people. In all, while it was a fun game, I wouldn't say the best.

Okay, what? As much as I like the Star Ocean games, Star Ocean: TTEOT was not a top 5 RPG. It was not a top 10 RPG and I wouldn't even say its a top 15 RPG. Shadow Hearts (the first one) was rated WAY too low. I can't really argue with Persona 3 and SH: Covenant because those two are two of the best PS2 RPGs I've ever played. Never played Tales of the Abyss so I won't comment on it. Again, much like your PS video, thought you had the right games in the wrong order.

Maybe not all but here are the one that I've played: Star Ocean 3: TEoT, Rogue Galaxy, Dawn of Mana, Dark Cloud 2; Final Fantasy XII have ATB system but without random encounters, enemies are visible in world, those are for PS2. On PSone Legend of Mana is pretty cool (also have coop mode).
Oh, and Prefering "normal" Fantasy RPG's, like you seein all the time... (but which are round based). And not such as like in "Tales of" where an extra battle screen pops up...

Glad to see Shadow Hearts 2 so high on the list. And I see Persona 3, but what about Persona 4? Granted, P3 is very good, I thought that P4 improved on P3 in almost every way.
@animekidbleachnaruto Persona 4 is more accessible. Persona 3 only allowed control over the main character, raising the difficulty & frustration a bit. Both are excellent games though.

I'm surprised someone put Shadow of Destiny in their top games. It was a very interesting game that I don't regret playing. I wouldn't consider it an RPG since its more like an interactive story if anything, but the story was good.
LOL. That's the worst Final Fantasy in the series for me since the main character in there is not you can call a main character it's like he is just a shadow in that game and the story SUCKS BIG TIME!!! FFXIII they said it suck also but I haven't played that since I don't have PS3. And FF series for me ended when the father of it left square.

Maybe not all but here are the one that I've played: Star Ocean 3: TEoT, Rogue Galaxy, Dawn of Mana, Dark Cloud 2; Final Fantasy XII have ATB system but without random encounters, enemies are visible in world, those are for PS2. On PSone Legend of Mana is pretty cool (also have coop mode).

Oh, and Prefering "normal" Fantasy RPG's, like you seein all the time... (but which are round based). And not such as like in "Tales of" where an extra battle screen pops up...

@9snaker Dude I like the "Tales of" franchise just like the other guy. I'm just saying that Grandia 3 is an mediocre game if you compare it to the first two installment.

And on a sidenote: Grandia 2 here is not even worth mentioning, it's not even amongst the best (PS2) jRPGs at least to anyone that played the perfect/decent DC version.

@Johnnykey Grandia III had its moments, but it never turned into something really good... I was hoping it would, but there came a point when I realized that wasn't going to happen. There's a lot of excellent RPGs out there, but this most definitely was not one of them.

Glad to see Shadow Hearts 2 so high on the list. And I see Persona 3, but what about Persona 4? Granted, P3 is very good, I thought that P4 improved on P3 in almost every way.

@animekidbleachnaruto Persona 4 is more accessible. Persona 3 only allowed control over the main character, raising the difficulty & frustration a bit. Both are excellent games though.

Nice list, I've been trying to find some ps2 rpgs to play while i'm at college so this will definetely help me. Ever play Dark Cloud 2? I think that counts as an rpg, its one of my all time favorites

I'm surprised someone put Shadow of Destiny in their top games. It was a very interesting game that I don't regret playing. I wouldn't consider it an RPG since its more like an interactive story if anything, but the story was good.

LOL. That's the worst Final Fantasy in the series for me since the main character in there is not you can call a main character it's like he is just a shadow in that game and the story SUCKS BIG TIME!!! FFXIII they said it suck also but I haven't played that since I don't have PS3. And FF series for me ended when the father of it left square.
