hey Keith, nice setup dude, surround gaming eh :) Hey, I just got said cooler and i have a question and was wondering if you could help me out (thanks in advance) I will be installing the cooler on my AMD for the first time and was wondering if i need to use thermal paste or does it already have a thermal pad and therefore there is no need to use paste? thx
@baldmanwithBIGlegs Thanks! Well the cooler, like most HSF's, will have the standard greyish paste panel at the end of the cooler, so you can use that if you want to. It is up to you whether you use the stock paste or get your own. Since i planned on doing extensive gaming I bought some Tuniq TX-2 thermal grease, but the stock will work ok. I would recommend that after a year or so you replace it with thermal grease or paste, since it dries out over time and transfers less heat.
@entrailsgalore Tsup dude, isn't the new Rev.2 pre-applied thermal paste MX-2? Thats what i've heard but I just got a rev.2 it said it was an updated version as of November 2010. MX-2 paste is pretty decent, I like it anyway and atm using MX-3. Cool vid anyway
@TIZ012 That I am not sure, but it sure is decent paste compared to other coolers I have seen, so you are probably right. It has been working well so far, I haven't had the need to replace it with anything else yet. Thanks for the comment!
thats for the vid, i have decided to get this heat sink from this vid, im getting around 56 c when i brouse the internet lets hope it goes down with this im using stock fan atm
@myPETsnailFRED It should go down at least 5 degrees if not more. Just make sure the thermal paste has good contact on the CPU and heatsink. I bought the Tuniq greese in case the stock thermal paste on the heatsink didn't work well enough. So far it seems to work fine.
@entrailsgalore ill let you in on a little secret, i dont have any thermal paste atm, im planning on gettin this cooler, another fan that goes on the back to creat a airflow from the side fan to the back, and cable manage so theres alot of room for air flow and see how much the temp drops
@meccmax125 It is probably a little hotter than it should be but the machine sits under a desk and doesn't have a lot of room to throw hot air out. My temps with the stock heatsink were around 58c on idle and got up to like 65c on load. With the new heatsink the temp is around 42c on idle and around 45c on load, so the cooler seems to be working. I used the stock thermal paste that came with the cooler though, I didn't apply the Tuniq paste so that may also be why it is so hot.
When you install this (on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 AM2 on MSI K9VGM-V) would the air flow from 'bottom to top' or 'right to left'?

Does this cooler support 4 core processors? Such as the AMD Phenom2 X4 955?
Ranc00r 1 year ago
@Ranc00r It supports socket AM2+ and AM3 so i do believe it supports the phenom II"s

@myPETsnailFRED You should be fine with the stock thermal paste that it comes with.

Looks like a nice heatsink, I have 5 of those Apevia Green led 120mm, they work well :)
Are those temps normal for AMD? my intel never goes above 38c max load...?

@meccmax125 That is also when my room is hot. I think when it is cold the temp drops down to under 40c, I haven't tested it thoroughly though.
