  • this song has it everything...

  • is there an extended version of this?

  • 80's one of best music era!

  • 80's one of best music era!

  • This song is so good. I imagine it only with electric guitars , more heavy. UUUhh would be cool too.

  • Saw him in concert recently - fantastic, he sings better than ever these days.

  • John Howard hit #30 in Billboard, 8-26-89. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great weekend!

  • Annoted with, "Another great video by Howard Jones" - I would argue, another expensive video that does not flatter either his pinched looks or wonky conceptual ideas (have you seen Things Can Only Get Better?!) but I must reluctantly admit, the songs are incredibly strong, both highly muso and bursting with pop hooks. What a conundrum our Hojo is.

  • Thx ;)

  • Howard Jones has so many great songs! I don't know if this is my favorite, but it is definitely "One of" my favorites! And what a gorgeous woman! Absolutely beautiful! She looks mildly familiar??? I seem to remember her in an 80's movie as a teen star??? Anyone know who she is? Would love to see what else she has done. =)

  • I LOVE HJ!

  • The Big 80's !!

  • @mocus1 Yes, one of the best songs from Howard Jones.

  • Vocoders are not, and never have been used to control pitch and Autotune and melodyne are not related to anything that a vocoder is capable of. people that use pitch correction do so to correct mistakes 99% of the time. Howard Jones does not use pitch correction software...you can hear the artefacts left from pitch correction, this is just a slight flange and delay on his voice.

  • howard is the best.

  • @sparkina she wants to possess him

  • For those finding this video and plentiful comments about "Autotune" that I'm seeing everywhere. Yes, they were able to "manually" tune vocals in the studio with state of the art equipment. They couldn't pull it off live yet. Sections of tape were painstakingly sped up or slowed to reduce pitch drift in areas and looped back in. The process was so expensive that it made sense to sing it in tune the first time.

  • she is a very pretty stalker:)

  • @derail33 I don't think this lady's supposed to be a stalker -- just a woman in love. She wears a bridal veil in later scenes. She's dreaming of marrying Howard

  • @Sparkina Who wouldn't? ;)

  • @derail33 I know I tyed the remark about the stalker but now seeing this vid again, I kind of rethought it

  • Why UK has so many talented artists ?

  • @danhhdang I'm actually constantly asking the same question and have no idea. my top 20 artists (maybe except one) come all from UK. how come that all of them come from such a small part of the world?

  • 20 years and this song still sounds super fresh

  • @clarkbell

that proves the brilliancy of it

  • Great tune and great vid. In the video, it seems that the LADY is the stalker rather than Howard. It seems the lady is stalking Howard, even fantasizing marriage to him (that WAS a BRIDE'S VEIL she was sporting), and opening her mouth wide like she wants to consume his soul.

  • @Sparkina maybe not so much a stalker, now that I rethink

  • the '89 Howard Jones is more sophisticated looking, sounding, and acting than the mid '80s Howard. He's lost the nutty hairdo, has a more sophisticated sound than in 84 and 85, and he seems to have gotten rid of his dancer

  • Here is something weird I realized.

Howard's song and video is about a stalking photographer and the superstition that photographs steal a part of the soul....

Barbra Streisand had a minor hit in the 70s called "Prisoner". It came from the movie "Eyes of Laura Mars". A suspense thriller about a photographer!!!

    Coincidence??

  • Hit #30 in the US. How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • seriously a great video....real imaginative

  • The woman in the video is Alison Steadman. She was in the miniseries

    "The Singing Detective".

  • Howard Jones kicks ass.

  • yeahhh so fantastic --

    <3 it forevever!!!

  • Wow...Reminds me of staying home from school with mono(GRIN), and doing nothing but watch Mtv. This was in rotation three times a day when i was sick. Music doesnt speak anymore, its to Politicized or Talentless. You would never see Van Halen attempting to say anything Profound Love the Video!!!!

  • been looking for this for ages. Thank god all the music vids are back on youtube. thanks for the upload.

  • Incorporating the best special effects of 1987! Actually, this is a good vid.

  • Still stands up today - 20odd years on! - and I still love the brilliant juxtaposition of keyboards / electric guitar on this track.

In fact I just love the whole album-Cross that line- was lucky enough to get howard to sign my copy. Highly recommended album!

  • hit only #30 in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • Memories of Newark!

  • One of the best videos almost no one has ever seen.

  • This is a KICKASS song.. brings back my past (when music was really good!!

Please take note everybody-> No AutoTune on Howards voice (cause this guy can really sing)

  • @MrWizzardozz I agree it's a kickass song, but let's not declare that all singing back then was nothing but natural voices. You can hear Howard using voice effects during the chorus, so why would you assume his singing here is completely natural?

The point is that vocoders have been used since the 70's to correct singer's pitches. Autotune just happens to be a type of vocoder with a distinctive sound; other vocoders are less intrusive. There's a reason why T-Pain uses Autotune so much.

  • @MrWizzardozz Sorry to burst your bubble but, while there's no AutoTune, per se (Antares and that exact technology didn't exist at that time) but this song most certainly did get mixed through 'tuning' and lots and LOTS of other effects, such as the Eventide Harmonizer. The settings used did in fact 'tune' the voice and were simply "keyed" in through MIDI automation rather than automatically tuning to the nearest chromatic as AutoTune does.

  • I really do like and love this song is one of the best songs that Howard Jones had ever recorded through his solo career.

  • Agreed :)

  • Not everyone could see you right away unless they have gifts of dicernment, and love, but without the dicipline which kindness brings along Mercy would not have any place to stand. To stand to look, to see possibilities, and enter that passage where you could be a Witness first hand you may never know.

Not all have the keys to enter, and if you are not trustworthy how could one Ever have the patience to take a sight into deeper things if they run away at the little things?

    Bird looking in

  • Is this the same woman in Brian Ferry's "Kiss and Tell" video ? She's a beautiful woman either way ! Great song too !

  • That was Jerry Hall (ex Mrs. Jagger) in Kiss and Tell. Good video too!

  • her name was Jerry?

  • @clarkbell lol sorry...it was Jerri!

  • this is a brilliant video. it took so much more work to produce something like this 20 years ago than it does now, so why does no one do it? anyway, great video and great song.

  • This is great. Remember it well. Funny though, must have been hard to edit in '89, even in a studio. Now we can do it on the PC. Great to see this, I had found the 20 year old tape, listening to it in the truck - still works! Look it up on Youtube and there it is. Brings back memories.

  • Remember, they had ADAT and digital recording utilities and they *did* have PC's then, Windows and Macs, and they were used in recording music. They were just much less sophisticated than they are today. :)

  • I remember reading that this video took something like 500 hours to edit!! Great video today, even by today's standards....the continuous stream effect of the gril flashing her camera is beautiful!

  • I thought this was the BEST ever Howard Jones video back in 89 when it first came out. Hard to believe it is now 20 years on!?!? It was a different world back then. I kinda wish I could go back.....

  • @BrownDavidson The 80's was the last decade I really enjoyed.

  • I remember having this tape, when it came out, and always thinking the cello intro was reallly cool sounding. :)

  • I love this songg:D

  • now this real pop and alternative music all in one , what we got today in supposed pop is nothing but faking of voices through using many studio equipments and mega phones at times not to mention the awfulll cheeseball and corny factors , i don`t know how people of today got so so damn stupid to believe that what britny christina and all the others do is any ligitimate music at all .

  • @chessgames

    very true

  • If you love this, you will fall over yourselves after hearing The Portmeirion Mix of this single, which featured on the CD maxi at the time. As opposed to a "mix/remix" approach, it appears the song was originally a 6m59s take they cut down for the album and single. It's a must-listen if you can find it (which was really difficult even back then).

  • OMG ! far ahead of its time!!!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG>>>>>>

  • I don not know why but I can say that I listen the Trevor Rabin's lead guitar style on this song as "Rhythm of Love" of Yes.

  • Does anybody know who is the lead guitar player on this song?

  • Howard use to have excellent videos, and this is a great example. Check the rest!!

  • Howard Jones did some great work...this is horrific, though.

  • This is my favorite Howard Jones song, but to each his own!

  • I agree, this is, imho, is one of his better, more sophisticated songs.

  • A good song form him and one of the best 80's videos.

  • Awesomee!!! What reminds of my childhood... 5*!!!!

  • this is the most creative video of all time

  • I've seen many from the 1980's that I feel are the most creative but this definitely rates up among all the rest of them for me as well!

  • my fav video of all time....very creative

  • one of the best songs from howard even though i love all of his songs!!!!H

  • this is from 1989 or 88 i think this was his last known song

  • He had a top 20 hit in 1992...Lift Me Up. He still records to this day...he's never stopped, they just don't play his stuff on the radio. Shame.

  • That was a great CD!

  • Can anyone uploade "Out Of Thin Air" from that CD?A very good piano pice from Howard.

  • this is a great video no matter who the artist

  • One of the best songs from Jones

  • I LOVE Howard Jones. I have fallen in love with this song after getting his "Greatest Hits" CD. I listen to it constantly! He makes the coolest videos!

  • Great Great Greaaat!

  • just saw this saint 4 days ago on july 3rd @ a small venue in jupiter fl.howard and robert played for all 170 of us, this theater was @ full capacity and it was a life changing event, seen tons of concerts over the years and have never been more moved by a show,he's still got it,i"m quite sure he"s never been better.if anyone gets a chance to see him in your area, seize the moment as the small crowd we were with had tears of joy!

  • Wow!!!!!!!!!!! You're soooo lucky to have seen Howard LIVE!!! I have been a huge fan since "Human's Lib" :) I would LOVE to see him live...

  • Thanks for posting this. I just LOVE that song and its video !!

  • Hi

I grew up in the 80's. Mankind was at his greatness then. Since then man has de evolved into well, look and listen around people, and it gets worse.

Music today is CRAP, absent from real talent. This song and artis is a genious. Like many in the 80's they could do it all and many are still doing it. Steve aka TIMELORD

  • I absolutely adore this song... great to see what a great video to compliment this great song.

  • 1 of the most creative videos ever!!!!

  • That's a cool one, I'd never heard/seen it before.

  • Musica de los 80.Lo mejor.Año 89 o 90 creo

recuerdo la secundaria y lo bueno que fue.

  • great song!

  • Great to hear this song again. It's been a long time!

  • The last time I saw this video was in 1989, I was amazed by the electric sound of the song, and the moving photographs effects on the video. The girl looks like Laura Branigan.

  • I can see where one would think that. To me she reminds me of Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles (another 80's group!) LOL

  • Howard jones songs are so great.. I love him and each song has a meaning to it..

  • EXCELLENT!

  • And the sad thing is, this gets less play than "What is Love" and "Things Can Only Get Better."

  • That cellist at the start is fantastic!

  • It sounds cool because of the effects it was ran through. Anyone with a cello could practice it and play it just the same :)

  • I love this song!

    Great video

    Excellent musician and song writer

    I just love him

  • classic-LOVE him!

  • Excellent muscian.

  • yeh he was, he seems underestimated... He's good live too + very capable of solo performance with just him and a piano.

  • great video......one of the best ever

  • great video

  • sounds like eddie van halen on the guitar. excellent song on a good system.

  • Actually there is no guitar on the track. Howard sent a processed synth guitar sound through old Marshall amps!

    Great Video, nice sfx!

  • My fave HoJo song ! He did, and still does, do some great stuff but this is my fave.

  • masterpiece of Howards music. I like this cause its progressive style. Sounds good from good equipment ;-)

  • This is my favorite Howard Jones song, and this video is impossible to find. Thanks so much for posting!

  • Interesting story - when I was DJ'ing back in the early-'90's, we were forbidden to play this song. 'Course, being the ever-dutiful employee, I played it! Never had any repercussions and never found out why we were forbidden. Strange.

  • If the song is so awful, why are you listening to it? Why?

  • not listening to it checking out the songs that are good of Howard Jones. He has 5 good songs. This not being one of them. I wanted to listen to these with open ears trying to find more ear gold but all I found was coal.

  • MUST BE A HOLE FAN.

  • Let's hope not! Brilliant!

  • Definitely his last great song.

  • Is it me or does Howard look like the alarms Mike Peters here.Great song.

  • Funny you should say that - I saw Howard Jones at the Bloomsbury Theatre in the late 90s ... and the support act was Mike Peters! Both were excellent. The Prisoner is definitely my fave HJ song!

  • The woman in this video is beautiful....Who is she?

  • i love this song brill.went to see him last year live and met him even better live xx

    karin

  • when u saw him did he sing this song???
