  • Wen it says DM8 USB kit, does that mean you have to hook it up to a computer in order to play it?

  • is that all of the sounds the DM8 USB has? anda can you make user kits?

  • The only question i have is if i can:

    1) play along to music plugged in from an AUX cable

    2) plug in some headphones to the module

  • how much is it?

  • una pregunta que diferencia hay entre la alesis usb kit dm8 y la alesis dm8 pro kit que quiero dtener unos de estos kit pero que diferencia hay ?

  • if you get the dm8 usb kit. can you replace the rubber drum pads with the mesh pads later? will they work with the usb dm8???

  • regarding what happened with the bell 2:20 i see alot of people complain about this problem .. did u come up with a solution for this? does it happen often?

  • @hobazzz Interesting to hear. I was wondering if other people had the same problem. I didn't find a solution to the problem. The DM8 was sent to me only to write the review. I returned it to Alesis after that. It seems that the only solution is to get a replacement unit.:/

  • Can you exlpain how you recorded your drum set to you computer as far as how when making this video what did you do to have the drum sounds record to you computer. I am drawing to do some drum cover but I have no idea how to link to my computer

  • @devinisabeastsmith There are two ways of doing it. Through MIDI (USB) or through the main out. I did the later. I simply used two 1/4" cables, one for each main out (left and right), and connected the module to my interface, resulting in a two-track stereo recording of the kit. Then I just synched the audio with the video that I took with my iPhone.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV Ok so with the 1/4 in cables how did you but such large cables into you computer did you have some sort of adapter to connect the 1/4 cables to a 1/8 port in the computer

  • @devinisabeastsmith You are going to need an audio interface such as a mbox. As I mentioned, you can also use your computer's USB port and record via MIDI. Make sure you google "audio interface" and "MIDI" in case you are not sure what they are.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV You thanks to all your help I have finally got it down and I actually recorded three videos. It would be an honor if you check them out and left a comment and maybe even subscribe if you want. You have really been a great help to me and I thank you again very much!

  • Hey man nice video! I have been looking for a practice kit and wanted to know if this kit has any problems with ghost notes or softer hits. I have tested other cheaper kits at the guitar center and it seems that some of them don't pick up softer hits on the snare and double kicks on the bass drum. Unfortunately, the guitar center by my house didn't have this one :/ I would appreciate the insight -- This kit comes at a good price! Thanks!

  • @JMLudwig Thanks! I think the DM8's pads have a very good sensitivity for ghost notes, specially for its price. You can also further customize this setting in the module, so you can best optimize the kit to your playing. Still it won't be as good as a Roland V-drum for example, since, at least to me, the mesh heads provide a much better definition regarding sensitivity. I also like the Alesis' ReahHead pads (they come with the DM8 pro) better than the rubber ones that come with the DM8 USB.

  • I just realised that the bell is going apeshit at 2:20 :D

  • @Triforce12345678 Ha, good way to describe it. Thanks for watching

  • Hello! I can't decide between this and the pro dm8! What's the difference between the two? Thanks!

  • @JuvelRubin The difference is only the pads. The DM8 USB comes with rubber pads. The Pro DM8 comes with Alesis RealHeads (these pads feature real drumheads). The module and rack are exactly the same in both models.

  • Hey nice vid man! :D does this kit come with the bass pedal or do you have to get the pedal separately?

  • @nEroAmee686 Thanks man. This kit does not come with a kick pedal. BTW, I think most of the e-kits out there do not come with kick pedal. Thanks for watching!

  • hey im thinking about getting this kit and i was just wondering is the snare pad more loud than the other drum pads?

  • @drummerroderick Well, yes, but only because of how the preset kits were design. Volume is an attribute that you can easily edit and customize in the module to all the pads.

  • What lead do I need to connect the module to my laptop's USB port?

  • @MarkIthica The module takes a USB Standard B connector. The USB cable comes with the kit.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV hey, aparently my alesis dm8 usb kit did not come with the usb cable so could u suggest some sites so i can order it online. thank you

  • @OGiBeAzT Try B&H, you can find pretty much everything there at good prices.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV ok thanks! great vid by the way :D

  • Despite me problem from earlier would you still recommend because of warranty? This module is out of the playing area unlike my other one and the rack seems more stable which would cause the the wires not move around in the female connector and wear them down? Thanks again

  • @AJxScooter Yeah, the rack is definitely more stable than any of other models alesis ever put out. I think if you had problems with alesis kits before and you are not completely in love with their kits, maybe you should look for other options, although they are probably going to cost more. Yamaha came out with some very interesting e-kits last years that are definitely worth checking. NAMM is also happening next week, you should also keep your eyes open for new e-kit releases.

  • Hey, great video by the way, keep it up :) By the way, I loves drums! I'm not hugely great at it though, but I play a lot of rock band, which has given me some experience if that's possible :/ visit my channel to check me out. I played this drumkit today at a store and wondered if it's a reliable piece of kit, and i'm thinking of buying. I also played the TD-20KX as well just for the hell of it aha, I loved it, sadley, I won't be able to afford it though!! haha, you're a great drummer dude!

  • @alloimlindseyloham Thanks for the kind words. You got some nice chops man. You definitely should move on from rock band to a real kit. I'm sure you will love drums even more! Yeah, the V-drums are certainly the way to go if you can afford them. I think the more reliable Alesis kits are the ones that come with RealHeads (the dm8 pro kit for example), but again, they are not Roland you know. I think that it is all about style and feel. If you are not a hard hitter, the DM8 USB can be reliable.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV Thanks man, just the truth :) Yeah, I've been going to a shop quite a lot recently looking and testing different kits, and the one that got my attention was this one. I've been wanting it for a long time to get a drum kit and decided I want one now. The only thing is my dad probably won't let me get one because he's a complete douchebag. Thanks for the info, it's given me a lot of guidance :)

  • can you add your own sample to the brain and what is best the usb kit or the pro thanks in advance

  • @CAVERN1234 No, you can't import samples to the module. You can use the module to control samples on your computer though. I believe the pro kit is better because of the type of pads it comes with (Realhead pads). But again, it's all about taste, if you rather play with rubber pads, go with the USB kit. Both kits come with the exact same drum module. The only main difference between them is the pads

  • What size head phone jack does the module use? Are you able to use standard headphones?

  • @ForiegnDrummer 1/4 inch TRS. Yeah, it is the standard headphones connector.

  • Hey, How do the triggers plug into module? I had a kit before where all pads met to one input and plugged in to one input.(posed problems when that input slot went bad.) Is this kit similar to that? Thanks very much

  • @AJxScooter Yes, it is similar. The pads are connected individually by TS and TRS cables to one main LFH connector (I believe is a LFH, not 100% sure) which it is connected to the module. But yeah, if that input slot goes bad, it seem you would need to have the module fixed or replaced.

  • Thanks for producing good quality video and audio of this kit. I purchased a DM8 USB because of what I saw here.

  • @rennieallen You are welcome. I'm glad I was able to help :)

  • Good stuff man if you need some sample kits hit up my vids

  • @ltbproductionz Nice. Thanks for the tip.

  • Do you need an external speaker or can you just "plug and play" so to speak. (im totally new to electronic drums.

  • @GIANT2503 You will need at least headphones. There are outputs in the back of the module that you can use to hook it up to an amp as well. The module is set up to just turn on, plug and play. You can then customize the sounds and other stuff later.

  • mine didnt come with a drum kick beater. it came with the pedal and stand for it..but no beater...

  • @PineGroveBird The kit does not come with a kick pedal. The pedal that you got it's the hit hat pedal, that's why it doesn't have a beater. :)

  • @MusicGearReviewTV how do i connect this pedal to my HH then??

  • @PineGroveBird One of the cables that you connect to the pads is called HH controller, or foot controller (can't remember now). Just plug that in the pedal. Remember to calibrate it so it can function properly. You will find the calibration procedure in the operator's manual.

  • please make more videossssssssssssss with the DM8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I love this one!!

  • @badasschick4 Thanks for the love badasschick4! Unfortunately the DM8 is no longer with me. Alesis only sent it to me for the review. I'm glad you enjoyed. I will try to make more videos of Alesis' kits in the future.

  • When I press my REC button, nothing happens. I followed the instructions on the manual and still nothing happens when I press REC, what am I doing wrong? How do I record a sequence?

  • @sammyboi1453 I bet your module is defective then. Maybe you need a software update... Recording is a quite simple task in the DM8. Call customer service right the way and try to get a replacement unit.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV thanks man ill give them a ring soon :D

  • @MusicGearReviewTV aww and i struggled to find how to do the update, I couldn't find the DM8 update app D: any ideas about that?

  • @sammyboi1453 hmmm, it is true. It seems there is no software update for the DM8 yet. Yeah, I strongly suggest you to call Alesis customer service ASAP and find out how they can help you out with this issue.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV They're sending me a replacement module tomorrow, thanks :) (you are always welcome to check out my one drum cover I did with it mwaha ;) )

  • @sammyboi1453 Cool stuff man!

  • does it have a good 808 (sub drop) already built in? or will i need to use my computer? i wanna add some of the pads into my regular kit for sampled sounds.

  • @carpenterbee10 From what I remember I think it does. The DM8 is no longer with me. Alesis only sent it me for the review. You can find out all the kits available in the module by going to the Alesis site and downloading the DM8 Operation manual. Thanks for watching!

  • 2:23 WTF the ride???

  • @evercusion1 Yes, the ride pad was defective. It was triggering automatically. It was one of the down sides of this kit (check the link above for my full review). I hope that this is not very a common issue with the DM8s.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV Man, I have the same problem with my rides bell, I have now just had to turn the trigger off completely. Also have you found a soloution to this problem? Because I bought my kit in the states (I live in England) so now I can't return it and also one of my tom pads came off, has this ever happened to you? Thanks, appreciate it :)

  • @Hanbangjang Sorry to hear that, dude. It really sucks. I couldn't find a solution to the problem either. I think it is something only Alesis can fix. I would suggest you to call customer service if you haven't yet. Alesis must be able to to compensate you somehow. Thanks for sharing your experience with the kit here. That's the goal of this video and review, to inform others about what they are getting when buying the DM8.

  • Can you set this up left handed?

  • @anthony0803 Yep.

  • does anyone know roughly how much floor space this kit takes up? i need to judge if it would actually fit in my room! thanks

  • @kosha11 About 5 x 5ft.

  • Is It the Video Lagging? or The Drum kit Lagging?

  • @JhomamaC A bit of both. It was a pain to edit and synchronize the audio on iMovie :/, but the kit itself is lagging a bit too. In some instances you can see that I'm playing a lot more notes than what's coming out. This problem can be somewhat corrected by tuning the kit's sensitivity with your playing style.

  • hey.. i'm just putting together a small "studio" in my home just so i can record some random songs that i write and whatever else i feel like.. i'm not a drummer, i'm a singer and guitarist.. but i can play drums good enough for what i'll be doing, is this kit good for a beginner/someone just getting the kit for small recordings that most likely won't be released or going anywhere?

is it easy to play/use if you're not a drummer? thanks!

  • @countingcrows123 I think the DM8 is a very good option for you. I think you will find it easy to play and useful. Besides all the sound available in the DM8, this kit comes with Toontrack's EZdrummer, which I can see being very useful for you songwriting. If you are somewhat familiar with MIDI programming, you can create very solid and realistic drum tracks using both the DM8 and EZdrummer. Make sure you read my full review on the DM8 on the link above.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV Great thanks! Is it possible to import the EZDrummer drum tracks into another software? Thanks!

  • @countingcrows123 Yeah, you can easily import them into any DAW.

  • Is there enough room to put two toms on the rack to the far right?

  • @Hocks86 Yes there is. The pads are 8" in diameter each. They fit well in the far right if you want to use them as two floor toms.

  • Is the bass drum pad compatible with a double kick pedal?

  • @SilentDestruction900 Yes. The bass drum pad is large enough to accommodate a double kick pedal. Thanks for watching.

  • Which mode do you use while playing?

  • @Bonelesher In the video above I'm playing the default Rock kit with the first accompaniment. The DM8 has a nice variety of kits for all tastes and styles. Not sure If I'm answering you question. Hit me back if I'm not.

  • 2:22 why did that happen? i mean the ride got stuck or something, is it normal to happen in this kit?

  • @cacaJols Yes, the ride pad was defective. It was triggering automatically. It was one of the down sides of this kit (check the link above for my full review). I hope that is not very a common issue. If you are thinking to buy this kit make sure you test the ride well when you get it. Send it back if it is defective and buy a different model instead. I own the DM10. It comes with Surge Cymbals. They are a bit less sensitive but more durable and reliable.

  • can u choke the ride and play crash in the ride ?

  • @616Afonso yes you can, i went to a music store yesterday. really considering buying it :)

  • @616Afonso You can't choke the ride, but you can easily assign a crash sound for it.

  • can you do a cross stick rimshot?

  • @zygote09 You can. You will just might have to lower the pad's sensitivity so you won't be triggering it when you do the cross stick rimshot.

  • 02:30 - what preset setting is that? will there be one like that on the Yamaha DTE xpress 3????? cheers lovey

  • @lcplhart Or the Pro version of this kit?

  • @lcplhart The preset is the Latin kit. The Alesis DM8 Pro also has that exactly preset because it comes with the same drum module (the DM8). I bet the Yamaha's e-kits come with some sort of latin kit as well. I would be surprise if it wouldn't. You should try to check out first and see if you like it, since it will probably sound a bit different than the Alesis' one. Thanks for watching!

  • Are these the sounds that came programmed in the module or did you hook it up to a progam like EZ drummer? I have the dm6 now but I'm tired of the lack of variety and kits. What's your overall opinion of the kit?

  • @Shaylashay All the sounds in this video are from the DM8 module. The DM8 has a nice variety (100 kits) comparing to the DM6 (10 kits). You can also customize each individual sound with the module's built-in effects. You can read my article/review linked above (under the video description) for my opinion on the DM8. You will be able to find reviews on the DM10 kits as well. Thanks for watching and let me know if you have more questions.

  • Would I be able to play with double basspedals on this set? :)

  • @Triforce12345678 Yes. The kick pad is larger enough to accommodate a double bass pedal. Visit the link above for more specifications. Thanks for watching.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV

    Thanks for the quick respond!

Would you reccomend this set as a first elecronic drumset? I play acoustic drums, but had this in mind for a practise set.

  • @Triforce12345678 I would recommend it if you are conformable on playing with practice pads (like the Vater Chop Builder etc). If not, I would recommend the DM8 PRo Kit, it's a bit more expensive but it comes with RealHead pads, which are pads that use real drumheads. It feels more natural to play with them if you only play with an acoustic set. I would also recommend for you to go to the nearest Guitar Center/Local Drum store and try out a few different brands and models.

  • If I wanted to buy two more cymbal pads, would I be able to set up another crash and a china to a user made kit?

  • @yoimer06 Yes, you can do that.

  • More of a demo than a review but ok

  • @TobyNorman777 - Yes, you are right. This is a video demo of Alesis DM8 kits. For the review please visit the link above. Thanks for watching!

  • Thank you for making a review of this kit and very nice drumming I am still watching it at this moment but when its done I will check out the review.

  • @devinisabeastsmith - Thanks! Make sure to subscribe our channel.

  • @MusicGearReviewTV THe review was really good. But not happy to hear that it starting to break on you. Also could you make more videos or reviews of the play alongs it would really be nice really want to get this set

  • @MusicGearReviewTV THe review was really good. But not happy to hear that it starting to break on you. Also could you make more videos or reviews of the play alongs it would really be nice. Really want to get this set and glad to hear pros and cons

  • @devinisabeastsmith Glad you liked the review. Unfortunately this unit is not with me anymore, I had to send it back to Alesis, so I won't be able to create a video demo of the other play along tracks at the moment. There are 75 different accompaniment tracks in total on the DM8 module, and you can also hook your music player to it. If you can, you should also try to take a look on the DM8 Pro kit, which comes with RealHead pads. You might find it more enjoyable to play.
