  • Bus driver...."we believe in doing good deeds for good people, especially Americans..." Yup, got that right...God Bless Newfoundland, God Bless Canada and God Bless the USA. It's sad our long undefended border now has to have such more stricter border rules due to the fact we have allowed the wrong people to live amongst us and that certain religion that spawns not only terror groups but other groups who preach an ideology of a "cultural jihad" on the west.

  • I lived through such a similar experience on 9:11 but in Stephenville, Newfoundland. This video depicts so accurately what we went through

  • Wow. Its so nice to be reassured that there are genuinely good people in this world. It's so easy to forget sometimes. Truly an amazing story.

  • Thank you Canada. I don't want to forget you and your good people for your warmth, love and hospitality.

  • Born and raised in Gander myself. I'll never forget that day. I got sent home from middle school, my dad was one of the senior Air Traffic Controllers at Nav Canada. I didn't see him for three days he was that busy working. Our population tripled in a little over a day. It's something that will stick with me for the rest of my life.

  • What an amazing story.

  • I watched this story several yrs ago. Very moving.

  • I'm from Gander and even though I was only six years old at the time, I'm so proud of what we did but still wish I could have done something more. Being 16 now I can't believe how long it's been. We took in 38 planes that day in out small town of 10,000 people which then became 17,000. W're have a ceremony tomorrow. R.I.P to those who lost their lives.

  • I love hot a lot of people said " Newfindland " instead of "Newfoundland" (: Its adorable. I'm glad people we're pleased of out kindness. We'd do it all over again.

  • @SVRSugar without the terrorism of course ;P

  • thank you Canada from a grateful American! :)

  • @ScoobieD0

    You're welcome my friend.

As a Canadian living in a suburb of Montreal, I remember seeing on the news what this little town was able to accomplish and I remember that deverted planes bound for the USA landed all accross Canada is the biggest cities such as Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Calgary and I think that a total of 250 airliners totalling 50,000 people where greeted from across Canada

  • I found this when I was trying to find some Alberta Rides For America coverage. Newfie hospitality is AWESOME!

  • Liz's cabin > palace of versailles

  • anyone else notice how the map shown in the broadcast made the US look twice as big as Canada?

  • In light of the tragedy in Arizona yesteday, I've just sent this video to ALL I know. For all to see that there are good people, still. Those folks in Gander/and surrounding areas deserve praises for years to come! What a wonderful lesson to reflect on.

PASS THIS ON TO ALL YOU KNOW. THEY'LL LOVE IT. THANK YOU.

  • Newfoundland is like the Ireland of Northamerica.

  • newfoundlanders....the best people on the planet!

i am a very proud one.

  • Thanks for making Canada look good Gander

  • i am very proud to to live in gander........sniff sniff.....have lived here two years xo

  • Anyone ever talks shit about Canada from the US, I just play one of these videos from Gander on 9/11.

  • God Diane Sawyer is unbearable, but mad kudos to the people of Gander.

  • dude, I laughed my ass off when she pronounced "New-found-land" Hahaha, you can tell she's yank!

  • I live in Alberta and we've seen a huge influx of people from Nlfd here and the one thing I can tell you about them is the fact that they brighten the hearts of everyone around them and I'm proud they are a part of our lives here where I live and proud they show the true heart of our country.

  • I had to laugh though, as I wondered what those foreigners must have thought of the "ugly stick" :)

  • Newfoundland you make Canada very very proud! Thank you for your compassion and humanity.

  • I live in Gander :D yay gander :D I remember all those people stayed in our schools

  • lol well Newfoundland aint the poorest province in Canada anymore... one of the the richest actually...

  • LOL, you are right. It is. Just not in terms of money. :)

  • keep it classy Canada!

  • Funny pronounciation New Found Land - it's one word, Diane.

  • Oh, bless you Kevin for Paying It Forward. I'm a Portlander, and we're glad to welcome you to the City of Roses. As for Gander, and all the other Canadian cities that took care of Americans during this crisis, we thank you. We are blessed to have Canada as a neighbor.

  • Is the poorest province? HAHAHHA.

Newfoundland is defently not, the poorest.

  • Yes, actually Newfoundland is the poorest province. Even the new province, Nunuvut, has more money.

Newfoundland statistics are widely available. However, the Island is rich in character and oil. Watch as the government steals the oil, the same way they let other countries take all the fish.

  • nfld has second highest GDP in Canada, check wikipedia.... idk where u get your information from.

  • Well, one site that retells the story of poverty in Newfoundland is Statistics Canada.

Newfoundland has historically been in the bottom three of poorest provinces and if lately it's been bumped out of the last slot, I stand corrected.

  • in teh past not the last few years. You can even check stats Can

  • Nunavut is a territory.

  • i landed in gander on air transat a330

  • I just watched this video and i am posting it to my facebook account! I'm a proud Newfoundlander :)

  • Friends. I landed in Gander that day and it blows my mind how people were there for myself and the other stranded. It turns out you can fall in love with a country and its people pretty quick. So from an American...I love Canada. You are the best people in the world and I hope that we can learn kindness from you guys. May God bless the maple leaf and espesially Newfoundland. Also, screech is like drinking liquid fire.

  • Newfoundland is the best .

  • @Dexflorida

Hah! I have yet to be screeched in. :D

  • @Dexflorida Yep, Newfies are known for that. :p Screech is terrible eh? Haha...

  • @Dexflorida Oh, I meant to say since the last time I replied to you, four months ago, I have been screeched in. Heh...

  • @Dexflorida I'm not from Newfoundland, but I am Canadian, and they made us so proud!! My city landed a few planes that day, but we didn't have the large runway to land big planes. Just a few hundred landed here.

  • This is sooo sweet!

  • 95 percent of Newfoundland believes in God and are Christian.

  • being form Newfoundland i can say dear sir that number is not correct.

  • according to collected church records and based on population of the province of Newfoundland 95 percent of this province believes in the existence of God and claim to be Christian.

  • and dear sir I am in this province.

  • Yes, Newfoundland has the biggest heart in Canada. I heard a speach by the PM of Canada about 10 yrs ago. He said that NFLD had the lowest per capita income (no longer the case now I think since offshore oil), and yet, despite that fact, NFLD gave the most in charity per capita. That is real courage! That is what the people are made of!

  • Even though I know very little about Gander, I think I now know why it's my "home" airport for jumbos in Flight Simulator :-)

On a more serious note, as someone trained in emergency radio communications, it does me proud to hear about communities like this that reach out to others in times of emergency.

    Paul In KCRP

  • Just wonderful!

  • Thank you.

  • I don't know if i've ever been prouder to be Canadian than I was on that day. There's a great book called "the day the world came to town" about Gander on 9/11/

  • This story is so uplifting and heartwarming. I could see this over and over. I can only imagine how grateful the passengers must have been once they experienced such love from the wonderful people in Newfoundland. Bless you all. Bianca

  • My mother was from the Pound Cove area in Newfoundland. She married my father, an American GI she met while in St. John's in the early 40's. She had lived in the US for the remainder of her life. She and my father traveled back only 3 times in their 36 year marriage. After my mother passed away. my four sisters and I planned a trip to Newfoundland to meet our relatives we'd never set eyes on. It was the trip of a lifetime. I am proud to have Newfie blood and yes, we were all screeched!

  • It was the whole Island that pitched in...you see the pepsi crates...well where do ya think all that pepsi came from if not St.John's!

  • i am thankful to be from nfld. it helps to know that when you go somewhere you can be taken in and giving food, and shelter. where else do you know in the world where everyone can be taken in like that? i have yet to know a place. nfld people are the nicest people ever and everyone thinks we are dumb. yet we are people who care for everyone and the world.

  • "where else do you know in the world where everyone can be taken in like that? i have yet to know a place." - 666nathan999

I don't know where either but I wouldn't rule that out.

"nfld people are the nicest people ever and everyone thinks we are dumb." - 666nathan999

Everyone? I doubt it. Last I checked, Margaret Wente's editorial got plenty of rebutalls.

And to talk about "nfld people" is a bit simplistic; I'm a Newfie and all I did was brought a couple snacks to one of the schools.

  • It seems as if you're trying to down him on what he said. He too stated he was a Newfoundlander, so why get on his case? I'm also from Newfoundland, live there etc, and saying "Nfld" people is no big deal.

  • "He too stated he was a Newfoundlander, so why get on his case?" - KRkitsune

Because my point was more so about questioning positive stereotypes; even if those are positive stereotypes of us.

  • Well still. I usually comment on negative comments. Not the good ones.

  • I visited Nova Scotia a couple years ago and wanted so badly to take the ferry from Sydney over to Newfoundland and experience it for myself. Now I know I need to do that. Thank you Gander, to all of Newfoundland and all Canadiens for your hospitality on such a dark day in our history.

  • Awesome place, awesome people.

  • I've been living in the U.S. for 40+ years but was born in St. Johns and will always be a Newfoundlander. It's 6 years later and I still get choked up about what my fellow homelanders did.

If you want to read more about what Gander did as well as some of the other towns on that fateful day, read "The Day The World Came To Town" by Jim Defede.

Rob M. (and proud to be a Newfie)

  • Excellent! I'd also like to comment that while Gander did a great job, there were more towns and cities in Newfoundland that helped as well.

  • Make me even more proud to be a Newfie. I am with you elmntl1 .... if the war was left up to Newfies, it would only be a party.

As for being the poorest province... just goes to show people, you don't need to be rich to be kind . You just have to be caring.

Proud to be a Newfie... Gail Gallant.

  • This is why I am proud to say I have Newfie friends. Although they aren't from Gander, they are from St. Johns, Mt. Pearl, CBS & other SE NFLD towns, they are no less compassionate than the Gander folks. If only the love and openness the Newfies have could infect the world there would be no more war just a huge shed party!

  • they had to mention that newfoundland was the poorest province in canada didnt they...

  • Well we are the poorest in terms of money. But we are the richest in terms of what matters! I am from outside Gander and we collected food; I was proud of my neighbors and I am proud of this thank you from the Americans.

  • @hbtharle

.......and well you should be proud. This story always lifts me up when I'm not in the best frame of mind, as today.

Thank you to all who made this possible. You're an amazing group of people.

  • @hbtharle Well, from what I've heard, it wasn't just Gander, but the surrounding communities. Of course no names were mentioned. We landed planes here, too, in Northern Ontario. Our city landed at least 3 planes. But we don't have the BIG runway, like Gander!

  • NFLD no longer poor with offshore oil. NL now a "have province". ha ha ha ha. Shows you what difference a few years can make.

  • lol yup!:D i put that comment there a year ago, and since then everything has swopped around, ive always been proud to live here but thats just the icing on the cake now. funny because were better off than ontario in many ways now, never thought that would happen:O

  • Yeah . Times like these I'm proud to be a Newfoundlander! :) It amazes me at how surprised they were that people took them in though. I guess its so normal here I'm used to it. It was good for the world to see how nice it is here though! :)

  • These are the things that make you proud to be a Newfoundlander. It's a part of the history of this province to lend a helping hand to your neighbors and in this case it was our neighbors to the south - the Americans. I'm glad the world got to see an example of that kind of Newfoundland spirit.

  • Gander did great, but there were other towns involved that did not get mentioned.Lewisporte was very helpful as were towns as far away as Botwood & Grand Falls-Windsor, and Gander Bay. We took ourselves and anything we could it in our vehicles and rolled up our sleeves & were happy to do it.Anything fr washing pots N Pans to cooking the food and opening our homes. We would do it again for anyone.

  • I'm from Gander!! I made sandwiches for ppl starnded there!!! ahha woo!

gotta say though ("in a far away place...they couldn't even find it on a map"?)...man,....we're right above the states....jeez. Glad everyone enjoyed their time in Newfoundland.

    did anyone get screeeched in?

  • I'm moving to NL in a few months time, and it makes one proud to be associated with NL

  • i wish the american government would learn a lesson from the gander residents....i guess thats asking for to much

  • I was a resident of Gander during 9/11, but ironically, I was on vacation in Florida when all of this happened (Actually, about 45 miles from Fort Myers where Pres. Bush was when the planes struck the towers), so I never got to experience it first hand.

  • I was in FL a couple of months ago and spoke to a woman working in Magic Kingdom in Orlando. She casually asked where I was from and when I told her I was from NL, her eyes lit up. She was touched to simply meet me, b/c of all she had heard about what we had done during the tragedy of 9/11. She hugged me and thanked me. She certainly touched me that day and reminded me that people do care and good deeds can touch the hearts of many, even those who are not directly affected by them.

  • This is why Newfoundland is the greatest province in Canada.

  • I'm a resident of Gander. I'm glad you think so. :)

  • I was there. The people were amazing!!!
