I actually liked this better than the Damon one, it was a tough choice, but i like this version because it has a darker and more sinister artistic vibe, both great though.
@tennisgurl206 It's his specialty. He and Christopher Walken are the Kings of that. Did you ever see him in Burn After Reading. It was a Dark Comedy by the same people who also did Fargo. I have read the books and after seeing The Ripley Movies and Strangers on a Train, you don't ever want to talk to anyone you don't know, and if you see someone and you don't remember them, stay away from them.!
@tennisgurl206 i asked myself the same thing the other day, and the only answer i could come up with was that maybe he is attracted by morally ambiguous and complicated characters...that makes it more interesting for him to play when the character has layers of substances and complexity...and hey, really not complaining about it here ;)
There's a scene in the beginning where Ripley beats up a guy for touching some rembrandts.. Right before he beats him up he says something which sounds like the norwegian "unna vekk" which means "get away".. Am I crazy or is this norwegian? Sounds unlikely, but the french "un avec" doesn't make much sense to me, so :P Suggestions?
How can the trailer indicate that he will take your family when he didn't? As far i can remember he didn't have any sexual relationship with jonathans wife! If i'm wrong please correct me.
I love Matt Damon, for showing Ripley's mimicking talent. But as far as the versions of Tom are concerned, I think this charming monster of Malkovich is closer to the Novels and the character.
I've wanted to see this film, but I want to read the book first...Highsmith was a brilliant writer, and Tom Ripley her most brilliant creation. An insane, intelligent murderer you can't help but root for, you feel so sorry for him (at least, you did in 'Talented', both the book and the film).
Plein Soleil and The American Friend are great Ripley adaptations...the latter being the original version of this film. The former being the original Talented...
Having seen it, I'd say it is better than the first film. It's well directed and the first movie is more stylistically flashy whereas the look of this movie is raw but that adds to its realism and the story is far better than "Talented Mr. Ripley". Also, John Malkovich is brilliant as Ripley. I think it might be his best performance. I wonder if there would have been Oscar buzz if the movie had been released...
Overall, the movie is a masterpiece, so overlooked. "Dexter" fans should love it.

If you've seen "Being John Malkovich"...you'll know that Ripley is probably controlled by someone.

Mr. Ripley is the devil incarnate. John was perfectly cast.

I actually enjoyed this movie. Malkovich did a good job portraying a killer with no conscious.

ripley in this is portrayed as more of a vigilante, he waas never evil, just misguided

He does very well, I admit, though I'm not really a fan of his. He's perfect in the role. I hate the ridicuous voiceover in this trailer.
