I'd love to know if EC and DT rehearsed the duet, or if it's just pure jammin'. Either way, it is sublime! Love how EC echoes the slide by bending notes--what a master!!
Sounds like we have two gods on this tune! We can share. And I love the way Eric moves over behind Derek. Class all the way. Damn I love real music played by real musicians.
This VID gets me every time, at 4:33 at the latest my eyes starts to water up. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful interplays recorded in recent years!
is it just me or does it seem like clapton is playing his 1st solo a bit sloppy? Not saying he's a bud guitarists or anything just sounds more sloppy than Ive heard him before
no he's a very good guitarist but sometime's he sounds more sloppy than others i think its just about how hard he is trying at that particular moment in time.
i agree that eric isnt at his best in the first solo but in the second break when derek & eric are playing off eachother, it is stunning. anyone know if is this on dvd?
What a great performance. There's no doubt Derek is bringing something special to the Eric show: just like Duane all those years ago made the album one of the greatest ever, with this song such a highlight.
I love the way Trucks and Doyle play this solo in their completely diffrent styles, both versions are great :D
Watch the "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad - Gdynia 2008, and you'll hear how Doyles aproach are more hardrocked than Trucks more smooth playing :D All in all a fantastic song :D
Just followed your link to the Doyle solo. I'm afraid Doyle is a total lightweight by comparison and Eric's playing suffers because he's just not being pushed. Derek is the only man for the job! (filling Duane's shoes)
It's supposed to be a custom made replica of an old 58 Fender Twin that EC owns and considers to be his holy grail amp.
The wood for the cab was taken by Fender from an old chuch's floor (or may be it was the roof).
He gave one of these replicas to BB King as a gift.
But as long as I remenber the original schematics (excuse my English) wasn't really changed.Well,I can´t exaclty remember as I read this from a Fender Custom Shop guy a fair time ago.
This is beautiful! Eric and Derek's guitar lines blend to form beautiful, intertwining melodies. It's kind of funny that Derek Trucks is playing on this song, considering it was originally done by Derek and the Dominoes.
Yeah, I saw the video. I just found it a little random that this guy probably said it just because he heard it, in that video. Doesn't seem too bright.
i've seen clapton 17 times and what amazes me how he is so unselfish about letting the other bandmates perform their talents.he never tries to upstage anyone.a true gifted and humble musician.e.c you're the best!
Eric & Derek sound like they are back at Criteria Studios in Miami with Tom Dowd in the control room banging out the "Layla" album all over again! Sends shivers down my spine, too bad they didn't jam for a few more minutes. Derek needs a larger amp(Soldano, maybe?)for big shows, his sound gets lost with his Fender Super Reverb. I think the two of them should do an album with just them(band) playing on it. Some nice Duane Allman style country blues dobro would add to their album. What say, Eric??
if derek is getting lost in the mix, then thats a problem for the sound engineer rather than a need to change amps. besides, we don't want any chance of changing that tone! peace
I've seen Derek with his band and The Allman Bros. at least a dozen times live and when there are other guitarists playing with him, he does indeed seem to be "lost in the mix" as you put it. It's usually because the other players do have Marshalls or Soldano amps, etc. His old Fender just doesn't have the "balls" for a large venue that's all.(sounds kind of "thin") His tone would not change except for being more pronounced in the mix, which most folks would really dig! Cheers...
Eric uses a Fender Tweed amp, and he's certainly not unheard. In Dereks case, It's very unusual to mix a Gibson Guitar with a Fender amp. His sound is quite thin for an SG though.
No Eric doesn't. >_> Eric's amplifier is custom made for him. It just LOOKS like a Fender Tweed amp, but trust me, it isn't. No Fender amp ever made has rectifier tubes in it and Eric's does.
"no Fender amp ever made has rectifier tubes in it"
sorry man....you're completely wrong. trust me.
most fender amps have rectifier tubes in them..including the ones derek is using here(5ar4/gz34). anybody that knows anything about fender amps will tell you that. i have a 65 deluxe, 66 super reverb and 67 super reverb....all with rectifiers. even my '49 gretsch electromatic has a 5y3gt rectifier in it.
probably a combination of things. i think the reason most people sound thin and weak on a strat iss beause they dont know how to set their EQ well enough and dont work with tone settings and so on. plus hes got a active mid boost in the guitar. i think he also rolls the tone knob on the guitar down to get close to the "woman tone" which can be thick sounding. the right overdrive can thicken up your tone too.
I absolutely love the way EC starts his solo with incredible bent note followed by his patented propulsive 16th note runs. Also did the way he precedes his phrases with a left hand brush with the open string. Just wish his solo went on longer.
yeah, that left hand brush creates a nice sorta hum thats creates some lovely tension before he goes into the 16th note riffs. Great shit, an i aint heard anyone else who can do it.
On the extra disc that came from Best Buy, the mix for both Got To Get Better In A Little While, and Why Does Love Have To Be So Sad,is greatly improved over the original broadcast, - except for one unforgivable flaw. Near the end of the second tune, when Eric joins in with Trucks, Eric's leads are virtually lost in the mix !!!!
Why oh why do people always have to look to put Clapton down. He is far and away the best white blues guitar player and has made a fantastic contribution to blues and rock music. Just enjoy this for what it is, two fantastic guitar players having a ball. Look at Dereks face at the end, that says it all. Duane Allman brought the best out of EC and Derek gets very close. The version of this song on Layla is without doubt one of the top ten guitar solos ever recorded IMHO. Enjoy!
I'm sick of this "best white blues player" bullshit. Howabout the BEST blues guitarist EVER. Why the fuck to people have to qualify it. Just because one is black does not mean one automatically has the upper edge on blues. I got news for you all, almost all of the so-called "real" blues guitarist who picked cotton and lived in the Delta are dead.
Derek idolizes Duane, so what I hear when I close my eyes and listen to this is the same magic that came out of the Criteria Studion recordings of the original Layla albumn with Clapton playing his part and Derek masterfully tackling the Allman licks. BTW - Derek Trucks is capable of taking Duane Allman's slide guitar style into the stratosphere and beyond.
the first thing hendrix asked on his visit to britain was if he could be introduced to clapton, i see y... i saw these 2 live earlier this year, fucking amazing
I have to disagree. If you listen to the original version on the Layla album and the live version on the Fillmore East album, Clapton plays in that style and well before Derek was born. It could have been the influence of Duane Allman on him.
Derek is sure already great, but clap plays why does love with the same kind of licks he did when played it first with Duane. I think derek knows the soul in that song and has learned the song. He his the best yet to have played it so beautifully. Best to you.
Clapton's greatest weakness is that he gets lazy if there isn't someone really good to push him. So with Derek Trucks in the band to help push him, we get Eric in top form,.

i think he gave derek the solo because he doesnt play with him on a regular basis. doyle is in erics band and he does take solos. but actually, i would have liked to see doyle solo in there too. that might have been cool to have the three soloists.
This was a great performance but can somebody tell me why it is that every time I see a clip of great solos from this last tour, Doyle Bramhall is relegated to just playin rythm? He's a great solo player too!!!
Doyle Bramhall plays rythm for eric`s band. Andy Fairwetherlow played rythm guitar before. It`s Clapton`s band, Bramhall has his other band where each play lead guitar. And people go see clapton solo and not another guitarist.
you actually got through to watch this live Im assuming? the webcast just threw the same advert/comming soon link at me for hours. Was repeatedly trying but never got it to work. A few songs are avaliable to watch on replay at least, aswell as this. Thanks for posting.

Doyle Bramhall plays rythm for eric`s band. Andy Fairwetherlow played rythm guitar before. It`s Clapton`s band, Bramhall has his other band where each play lead guitar. And people go see clapton solo and not another guitarist.

sometimes he solos. but like amorimfelipe said, people come to see clapton play so hes going to do the most soloing.
