Take into consideration that all of these books are of the Romance- Urban fantasy/ shitty vampire novels variety. You never see this cover on books by Simon R. Green, Jim Butcher, or Rob Thurman. In my expeiance, those covers often indicate a rather useless female protagonist and a cheap romance plot that gets in the way of the monsters and gun fights. With the notable exception of Libba Bray, in which case, the cover is directly linked to the plot (and is historical fantasy, not UF).
So you are against moons tattoos and looking over the left and right shoulder. What exactly do you WANT on the cover of a paranormal romance which usually depicts from old legends, the moons, the symbolisms, which in todays world are transferred into the form of tattoos and dark and skirts. They can only wear skirts of trousers they only got two shoulders to look over, or did we want to see the back of someones head. What do YOU want to see on the cover of a 'paranormal/urban/fantasy romance?
I've never edited video in my life, and I hate to say it, but I think I could do better than this. This should have been a layup! All the material is right there, the lousy book cover designers did the work for you. Tighten it way up and lose the crappy music, for a start.
I was agreeing with the message of this video for a while until it turned into 'Have you noticed how every Urban Fantasy book with a woman on the front shows her back or front or side and she always has a tattoo unless she does not and she always has a naked back except when she is wearing a corset or a dress or jeans or a shirt? That is spooky!" :-p
it's called the light beer phenomenon. No matter whether something seems like a good marketing campaign or not, every other company will start trying it, in case it takes off they won't be left behind. named for when Miller introduced Miller Light and Budweiser thought it was a dumb idea. over the next period of sales they paid for that bit of hubris. Eventually they caught on but that's a few million they'd never see. lol
I've always wondered how twilight managed to attract so many readers even though it wasn't the 1st urbanized vampire romance novel. Now I can see the covers of most V.R's have all that, bareback, tattoo, weapon, moon, mombo jumbo, But twilight's cover takes a simpler approach with an apple in hand. Say what you will but EVERYONE judges a book by its cover.
@L33TNINJ4Grrl Long story short, Twilight pulled off what it did by targeting the 'high school girl' market with a romance designed to appeal to them without being too spicy for their parents to throw a fit over. It aimed at a specific demographic not generally known for their appreciation for vampires, and publicity from that has handled the rest.
Or, as the guys formerly known as Mystery Science Theatre 3000 (currently of Rifftrax) put it, "coldly calculated to pander to your shrieking demographic."
This is hilarious! The really funny part is that they shelve Urban Fantasy in so many different sections--from mystery to science fiction to romance--that I find myself on the look out for the typical cover in order to find UF. So, this is true and well done and even fans of the genre(like me) have to laugh and nod!

All the P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast books about the House of Night need to leave this video. They are NOT urban fantasy. They're young adult. And lol. You put in A Great And Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray. That book falls under the category of where Harry Potter is.
I'd appreciate it if you'd read closely on the video. He's comparing Urban Fantasy covers. I was pointing out his mistake at telling him that a few certain novels up there are not urban fantasy or paranormal at all. They are books for children.
Did I trash his video? No I didn't. I actually enjoyed this video because I thought it was very true. A lot of urban fantasy covers are similar.
I have no time for immaturity from someone who doesn't even realize the point of this video.
"a few certain novels up there are not urban fantasy or paranormal at all." I think they are up there because their covers look similar to the covers of actual urban fantasy or paranormal novels.
lol I noticed that too..I would always think to myself " this book is nothing special" and move on...but I never consciously thought about it before. good vid
after the third I started to get irritated

OMG! So funny. The tattoo at 1:06 is just atrocious. I can't even think of marketing person thinking that was "deep, dark, and angsty".
Whats the name of the song?

bwahaha . . .
this video is the shit!
anyhow it's a great trivia about jackelyn Carey's Kushiel books being the one to start the whole naked back, tattoo pose :
I just want it to be clear that the Kushiel series and Anne Bishop' works are NOT Urban fantasy.
whitedow 2 years ago
Agreed. Carey and Bishop are straight-up fantasy, kids. Don't let their inclusion fool you.
But this is a hilarious vid!

A book can be both young adult and urban fantasy. House of Night may be written for teenagers, but it is still urban fantasy.
