That's actually pretty. Although I dont think it was a tornado.It looks more like a dirt devil. Dirt devils normally happen during a dry non-rainy day with no storms like the day in this video. For the most part, from my experience, they are normally harmless. I see them a lot especially in corn fields for some reason.

According to theory, this meteorological event should have been rotating anti clockwise, being in the northern hemisphere. I can no longer trust that theory and assume that dust devils down under will be clockwise which means flying my hang glider into a dusty the wrong way could be bad. tks for the excellent vi.

About the Coriolis effect, the truth is in between. I've flown hang gliders and paragliders in thousands of thermals, over thousands of the dust (and wheat, leaf, newspaper, etc.) devils that they cause. Sometimes during one flight I keep track of the rotations, and in the 45-50 degree north lattitude range, 75-80% of them rotate counterclockwise. So there is an effect at this scale, but not a strong one. The one in the video is a not-so-rare exception. Nice video!

I easily imagined this as a playful sprite. One which approached the admiring human, gave him a small, regal "caress", and then moved away, lost once more in a self-absorbed, rapturous dance... :-)
