for that spaceman game at 1:00, i have a question. I am currently making a game very similar to that, and i can't get my character to turn from left ot right or shoot in that direction. i realize it is simple, but i am a total n00b to netbeans.

it is not hard, you just need two boolean to the movements, if left key or '2' pressed "left" will be true, if '6' or right right will be true, as you did the movement to a direction you only nead to do almost the same way to the other directoin just now you subtracts the speed from it. For the character paint you will nead to use a third boolean which if true the charecter looking left, if false looking right, if you press key left, it will be true, if right it will be false.
