Kasparov's smug face is kind of hot. He is arrogant, but that Cohen person is condescending. Why is arrogance so ugly on Americans but so hot on Russians? lol
Mr. Cohen is world renowned scholar in russian studies with American interest at heart.
Mr. Kasparov is a great chess player, but he is no scholar and he has Israeli interest at heart - Why should Russia care about Hamas or hizbullah?!!. Don't they have independent national interest?! And imagine if VP Cheney takes Mr. Kasparov suggestion and goes to Moscow to insult the Russian people on their land ??!!
The only path to prosperity for the Russian people is Socialism!
Capitalism has devasted Russia, and every other former-Soviet republic. 25 million excess deaths(Population decline) occurred in the former Soviet Union from 1990-2008. That amounts to the total deaths of the USSR in WWII happening during peace time!
The capitalist oligarchs plundered 60 years of the labor of the Soviet worker, and now capitalism has brought the immense reduction of standards of living, poverty, and misery.
Kasparov's Subtitle, "Former Grandmaster", is incorrect. Once a Grandmaster in chess, always a Grandmaster. It does not get taken away when one retires.
This is my final advice to you, Mr.Kasparov: if you want to become a more sucessfull politician, then you should listen to more smart people like Dr.Cohen, and stop interrapting him! Or, go out of politics, don't fool the people, let a new generation of a young and better educated Russian politicians to come to the venue of the Russian politics instead! For the sake of Democracy in Russia, for the sake of the future of the Russian people!
More respect and reverence when you "advise" a genius. Chances are, Kasparov is far and beyond anything that your brain can ever come up with. This by itself doesn't make you a moron, but if you do not understand your intellectual inferiority compared to one of the brightest minds of the 20th century, then your intelligence must be MUCH below average.
Well, my dear Skakunchik, I am sorry if my criticism of Kasparov's political abilities offended you. I bet he is a sacral person, if not an idol, for you.
Just to remind you, I was NOT talking about his chess ingenuity and achievements, my dear. I was talking about POLITICS, and his incapacity to discuss the political issues, very much like you. No wonder that he has such follower like, who are intolerant to any opposition. Lastly, if you missed it, recently Kasparov himself admitted his political ineptitude saying that he was a bad politician (I will find the prooflink and post it).

I just don't see how he can win over the Putinouds and Kremlins, with his lack of political skills and incapacity to tolerate the differencies. Look at his face in the video - can you imagine Obama or Ted Kennedy, or any mainstream US politician behaving like him?
Can you see them living the life of a revolutionary, risking their personal safety on a daily basis to defend the future of their country? Be realistic, buddy! Don't be fool and fooled, buddy! Good night and good luck!
Sorry to say, but this is a typical comment of the uninvolved american, with the stubbornly dull, "I-know-it-all" attitude, so irritating to the rest of the world. Leaders with the dry, materialistic approach to things, even with a good stage presence, never made it anywhere in Russia. Russians turn away from pragmatist leaders and gravitate toward those capable of brave, insane deeds. That's why the western model of democracy and equal right will never work in Russia (unlike Kasparov's belief)
By the way, I said "that by itself does not make you a moron", so I didn't call you names. But I do have to say that you are flattering yourself with your nickname; a better one for you would be "CAPragmatic". :)
To conclude, you and you freinds in the current Russian opposition following exactly their way, the way of the doomed Russian opposition of the 19century! Remember what Dr.Cohen told you: the future of Russia is with the strong trade-union movements! Remember how the striking Soviet coal mining workers shakened the Soviet Union in the late 1980s-early 1990s? Remember how they made possible Eltsin's arrival to the power?
As a politician, Mr.Kasparov should listen to the advices of Dr.Cohen, a renowned scholar and expert of the Russian politics. For example, about a deep abysmal existing between the current Russian opoosition and the Russian ordinary PEOPLE, what Dr.Cohen claaed "kvartirnaia politika". Mr.Kasparov, remember what we used to say about the Russian opposition of the 19th century? "Strashno daleki oni byli ot naroda"!
As a person and discussant, Mr.Kasaprov should learn some good manners of civility and respecting his opponent. He behaves like a typical Russia-Soviet macho man, constantly interapting his oponnent, unnecessarily and excessively gesturing, grimacing to show his disagreement, and debating for the sake of showing his own "rightfulness" and his oponnents' "incompetence" rather than finding a solution.
Kasparov is right bring back democracy and give Russian people the right to vote let the people decide who leads their country. Putin's regime is scandalous against it's own people. I have Russian friends and they all say the same thing.
Actually, the biggest rollback of democracy (aside from the unconstitutional banning of the Communist Party in 1991) was the shelling of the Supreme Soviet in 1993. The sham election of 1996, where Zyuganov was (fortunately but disreputably) spent out of power by the oligrachs was perhaps the apex and sadly kleptocracy has largely plateaued with depressing strength since then.
This is the lamest interview format I've ever seen on Charlie Rose. Why does he keep talking to Cohen as if Kasparov is not even in the room? If he wants them to debate, why not ask the question and address Kasparov in the question. The question, do you think Garry is nieve? was insulting. Nonetheless, good post, I enjoyed watching.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
kasparov is not a patriot. he is jewish and he wasn't even born in what is now russia. and just cuz he's a chess champions doesnt meant that he's a good politician. was einstein a good politician?
Kasparov is indeed a heroic figure, since he is risking his life in opposing Putin (remember Politovskaya and Litvinenko?), when he could be living out a comfortable retirement in New York or London. Dislike of Kasparov is often inspired by nothing more than anti-semitism (exemplified in the comment below). But I think Cohen is right, unfortunately, when he says Kasparov's association with westerners hurts his cause in Russia.
I've watched Stephen Cohen before. His views are absolutely bizarre and reprehensible. I doubt you could really take any of his sophist views "to the bank".
I like Kasparov but I would think he would be more competent in his current role if he had spent his career composing "help-mates".
Perhaps it would aid him if Kasparov noted that a small, tight, highly focussed coalition (bolsheviks) beat out the broad coalition (mensheviks).
You think Stephen Cohen's views on Russia are Bizarre? Why? I happen to think if USA foreign policy towards Russia would take on tenets of Dr. Cohen , then the 2 countries would not be on the course they are presently on , which could be so much better. He understands Russia thoroughly, and their historic mindset as it pertains to the last 100 years, He has a great understanding of what can be done to foster a better view of the west from Russia point of view. We need that now!
Capitalism and Democracy does not evolve from chaos. Yeltsin period proves that. Capitalism and Democracy can only evolve from stability which is exactly what Putin has developed.
This so-called "stability" can also lead to the revival of the authoritarian regime, which is now chosen by Putin. You can't build a democracy using evil methods, because both people and the elite will get used to it, and there will be now democracy at all.
A few authoritarian changes like raising the threshold to get into parliament and getting rid of a law which allowed you to vote against all candidates. However a centralized regional system is compatible b/c India uses a similar system and it is good to b/c it keeps places like Chechnya under control. Also on media laws there are two major ones close to Putin but many private ones which allow dissent and there is no internet censorship.
But before that he would get rid of the military altogether and sell his political opponents to some kind of tribunal, "ICTR" if you will. That's what most Westerners do not understand about the new "democracies" in eastern Europe thanks to the "free" corporate media of the West. And that thing in common between ALL of these regimes is that they are less democratic than their predecessors. Shevarnadze, Kuchma, and Milosevic never even dreamed about acting in a way
There are few democracies without a history of repression. The US central authorities waged a civil war against states that sought independance. Putin has kept Russia away from civil war, despite all the odds.
If you lived in Russia you would know that Putin's high popularity ratings are not related to controlled media. Russians first of all get most of their news from friends and relatives, it's a much closer culture. Next the high popularity is due to a significant change in the standard of living. Russians today can find decent jobs, don't wait for hours for food, and they are safer
You can't say for sure, whether people really like Putin or not, because they can't hear the truth. And Russian people are also politically uncontious and very well controlled. The Government fires them with a fierce nationalism and anti-democracism, and they choose antidemocratic parliament. The origin of it all is a lie
In other words, Russians need you and your kind to tell them what to do. If any nation doesn't do as they are told, it is because they are being somehow deceived.
To think that the average Russian puts any stock in TV news is the height of ignorance. As the old joke goes- "What's better: a newspaper or a TV? Answer: a newspaper. You can't wrap a fish in a TV."
Kasparov is a brilliant chess player but he is no leader or politician. he is completely idealistic and probably in bed with the oligarchs trying to overturn the government again.
Another thing that was never discussed, Kasparov is a brilliant chess player, probably the all-time best, who had a lot of influence in the chess world and who was active in the chess politics throught 80s and 90s. The results were catastrophic for chess.
Because of his attempt to break from FIDE? It was a failed business venture. Ask Korchnoi about the stability and fair play of the professional system before Kasparov.
Cohen knows what he is talking about. Kasparov's actions though very idealistic are completely unrealistic. His tactic to create a united front with anybody who is against Putin including extremists on one hand and former prime-minister who is identified with Eltcin's corrupted times on the other can't win any support from russians.
Not to mention the fact that the key power group behind Kasparov are the oligarchs who were betrayed by Putin. They put Putin in power on the assumption he would be a loyal dog; turns out he wasn't afraid to use his teeth.
The Berezkhovskys of this world probably think Kasparov would be a loyal puppy. Though I'm not a big fan of his, I suspect they would be disappointed. The man DOES have principles.
Saw Kasparov on Real Time with Bill Maher and was very impressed by him as well as here. This guy is one heckuva man and wish we had somebody like that running in this country.
Kasparov's smug face is kind of hot. He is arrogant, but that Cohen person is condescending. Why is arrogance so ugly on Americans but so hot on Russians? lol

However a centralized regional system is compatible b/c India uses a similar system and it is good to b/c it keeps places like Chechnya under control. Also on media laws there are two major ones close to Putin but many private ones which allow dissent and there is no internet censorship.

in which Saakashvili, Yuschenko, and Tadic are doing now.

You are an unenlightened child. If this guy came to power it would be like Zoran Djijinic in Serbia. HE would shot at the first day.

Kasparov is a brilliant chess player but he is no leader or politician. he is completely idealistic and probably in bed with the oligarchs trying to overturn the government again.

my country is in danger : LOL ) this guy isn't even Russian

I think he was about to give Cohen a left hook.
