This guy is blabbing too much. Nadal played the night before for 4 hours with Djokovic. Also, too much playing by Nadal this clay court season wrecked his knees. What a difference a year makes. Nadal now the king of tennis.
@ThailandKyle It's because he's a Federer fanboy who only ever gives Nadal reluctant praise. Just like how Patrick McEnroe used to always talk about how Federer should beat Nadal with a change in tactics. Question is, how many slams does Nadal need to win before people realize that he's not simply a bad matchup for Federer (or simply a clay-court specialist), but an all time great in his own right?
Also, the elevation makes Madrid faster. Add that to a weakened Nadal and Fed pulled it off.
This is probably the match which screw Nadal up and lifted federer. Nadal got so many injuries after that, can't defend his roland garros title and let his rivalry federer to win it. Roger back on track!
Nadal simply matches up well with Federer. Federer is a better all-around player (better serve, more penetrating forehand, more success over more years on more surfaces) with more success year round (January through November) versus Nadal (who burns out by September).
Federer is a better player taking their total records versus all other opponents into account but Nadal does have his goat on clay (9-2 record). Wim 08 and Aus 09 could have gone either way meaning h2h is 11-9.
But because he switch to this style, he sacrifice the high topspin he has always used to win clay court matches. What I am saying is that Federer may be the goat but Nadal also has the potential. It is just really disappointing Nadal's footwork was so ingrain into clay court that it messed his knees on hard court. Otherwise Nadal is just as good as Federer. Who ever suggested training on clay court is better than on hard court? Idiot.
Very nice observation but you neglect one very important aspect of the game that is of Nadal's. What you say are true but Federer may have been using those strategy for the longest time. In other word, it is not Federer who out play Nadal but Nadal who down play Federer. Leave aside the fact Nadal maybe injure, consider the style Nadal has been playing with. He no longer use the looping full western forehand and switched to a semi western forehand. This is why he won australian and wimbledon.
dude nadal was fine in madrid. federer just outplayed him this time. just deal with it. nadal isn't perfect and neither is federer. nadal lost. no excuses.
i think he'll be out by 1st match vs Ferrer, or maybe he'll win the match vs david, but then Juan Martin waits for him in QF's and he will be eaten alive !~

@jeanmatossierra Yea even after winning the US Open, I doubt Nadal would be able to match Federer's record, even if Federer was to lose in every GS he plays till he retires, but that won't happen.
nice analysis buddy, ive watch your analysis also with the federer eastern grip, and its a good one, more power. just to add bout nadal, i think he cant surpass federer's 15., coz rafa's playing tactics depend only on his fast movement when getting to ball, meaning his knees will be worned out after every intensive game. Thats what happened to Lleyton Hewitt, we thought that he can have as many grandslams as he would like, but injury caught up with him. Federer's game has a low injury risk
Reply to juandi2570: Any player that makes it to a GS final is worthy enough to win it. It doesn't matter who it is. So, whether it was against Nadal or a blind guy, it makes no difference. I agree with halfsouthafrican, a win is a win. Twenty years from now, nobody is gonna care who Federer beat to win the 2009 French Open, do most people know who Rod Laver beat to win his majors? Some, but not many. Our grand children is gonna be told that Federer was the best player in our day. I do believe that Nadal, if healthy, will win more majors, but I dont see him winning more than 10.
Well said, I completely agree. I'm all for Federer putting that slice backhand away, which has been used to set up his great forehand, but I'd rather see him develop a more aggressive backhand.
yeah bro i think he is. I like both Roger and Rafa so that's why i want Rafa back at 100 percent so they can duel it out next year at peak conditions. I heard he has slight tendinitis in one knee and mild-severe tendinitis in his other. So he should really ease off because the only way to really get better is rest. Just think Kevin Garnett and the Celtics this year and what happened with him coming back too soon. We don't want to see Rafa trying to come back at US Open and getting badly injured.
Anyways Rafa should get him some rest and skip the US Open and not return until the Australian Open so he is absolutely 100% and not 80% because the way that Nadal plays he always has to be at least at 95% to win a Grandslam.
So in the end you were right but for all the wrong reasons. Fed beat Nadal because Nadal was already injured and just was ignoring what his body was telling him and paid for it in the FO and Wimbledon. He should have never played Madrid. He reagravated his injury against Novac in Madrid. In addition he had reagravated that injury before in another tournament, i think it was Rotterdam or Miami?
It's Nadal's fault that he needs to run like a rabbit instead of gaining points like federer with max 4 shots.Nadal needs 7-8 to make point, so it's no doubt Federer is better.nadal will retire around 29 years old, that to be optimistic
its just different style of playing. federer's game is definitely more clean, and less grinding than most of the guys on tour(except serve and volleyer.)
not true. that is why tennis is played on the day. because with your statement, melanie oudin is the best wta player alive. because of her us open performance.
I think another huge statistic for Federer was his break points saved and his break points converted stats. Those were HUGE in his history against Nadal. Usually you see Nadal convert a lot of those, especially on clay. Most games where Nadal pulls a break point on Federer, he will win the game. And a lot of the times, Federer can get 10 break points on Nadal IN ONE GAME and still not convert. This time, we have Federer pulling 2/2 and Nadal pulling 0/4. It ties in well with the service numbers.
you are right. In Melbourne it was just as you say. Fed could not convert his breakpoints. Why? Maybe because Nadal, as a lefty, can serve on breakpoint from his choclate side onto Fed´s backhand.
If roger wins he reclaims number one due to nadal loosing 2000 points for not defend his title putting him at 10637 something if roger wins he gets and extra 600 points on top of his defending runner up so there for goes to 11000 something poitns reclaiming it Funny how they may switch again in the same simliar time frame
I wanted a chance to thank you for running such a high quality tennis forum. I am a member of FYB and the great videos and demonstrations you guys provide to public really helps leads the growth of the sport. I think you would make a great coach, as good as they come.
federer will beat nadal in wimbledon.last year he was suffering from a virus thats why he didnt win it.this year he will surely beat rafeal nadal.its his one of the favourite tournament and favourite playing surface.
no but nadal has become a great all-round player, on grass over the years, he has beaten federer now in a grand slam in hard court, and pretty convincingly..and fed didn't look close to spectacular in the french open...in a grand slam, nadal always has the edge, fed is becoming too weak, nadal's hunger will let him lift the trophy once again.
who do you think will win wimbledon 2009? no analysis for that yet, also take into consider nadal's knees and fed's rising confidence...but i still think fed doesn't have it in the head to beat nadal in wimbledon...wat do u guys think?
Are you serious?! Fed doesn't have it in the head to beat Nadal at WIMBLEDON?! You're out of your mind. Wimbledon is the one that Federer THINKS he can beat Nadal more than any other surface. Grass is Federer's BEST surface. Nadal has beaten Federer multiple times on clay, and 2 (maybe 3. I'm not 100 sure on that.) on hardcourt. ONCE on grass. For me, I'd be pretty confident that I could beat him on the grass. I pick Federer to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
It´s really funny how fed fans get so carried away and lose any perspective.............Ok, Fed won two slams in a row and i have to give him credit but if we break those wins down, Nadal wasn´t around and fed didn´t beat any top four seeded to conquest those slams. Besides Fed didn´t play his best to beat the one dimensional roddick in wimbledon´s final. Now you fed fanatics think roger is gonna win 3 slams every year for the next five years hahaha, what about competition and age, Nadal?
Well Nadal's play with a lot of Power. that's why when he gets old he can't maintain the level of tennis he is playing right now. Unlike Federer which relies on technique not on power. thats why in later years Federer can still play High level tennis. look at Nadal now. He got injured because he hussles to much on every point.
excellent analysis. and very much correct. and its again nice that you predicted Federer's rising performance on clay this season and predicting his first french open. Cause many were of the opinion that he would loose to jokovich in semi final. But i persoanlly think that he would have beaten any one this time in the finals.
yeah I don't think Nadal is going to be playing tennis as long as Federer in the top 5, Federer's game is much more relaxed !! he said he would be playing at least until the olympics in England in 2012 !
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This is just dumb dude. I could analyze this much better than you. In fact, I'm gonna make a video just to prove how much better I can do this than you.
You should be Federers coach. But your right Federer needed to be more aggresive against nadal especially on second serve. I can see federer storming the game again for a couple of years. Nadals problem now is his knee, its a problem for a while and due to his incredible physical approach to the game. I hope he recovers so we can have more classic matches between them, they are both great embassaders.Well done Roger you have proved you are the greatest, a golden age for mens tennis!
I can't believe you were right about Fed winning the French open. You said it before it even started! I was pleasently surprised! Good pointers on your website keep it up...
I think the main reason Fed won was we didn't see much of Nadal's forehand grinding to Fed's backhand. Fed changed his game plan to prevent this well as its the only obstacle that prevent him beating Nadal.
If I had to pick right now I'd say yes. But we've got a month before the tournament starts -- I wanna see how he does in the upcoming tournaments before I make my "official" pick.
That's the most intelligent and insightful match analysis I've heard in a long, long time. Very impressive. You put the TV "expert" commentators to shame. Thanks for this.
What`s up budy!, me n`some friends in this commets room, we`re trying to predict in what round nadal will be out of roger`s masters. Can you tell us what you think plz?. For us is important because you predicted Rog winning the past two GS awsome!
I think the main reason why Federer won was becuase he just kept hitting it to Nadal's backhand. Nadal's backhand isn't particularly good tbh hence why Federer was winning most points.
As a tennis analyst and coach, 2001 I received an award as the best coach in our University, I have won a lot of championship. I do believe that RF will NOT win RG FRENCH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP IN HIS entire career. He is not deserve to have that title because he have a lot of sick when come to finaL specially French Open... How many time he had lost to RAFA... My comment for him. Better he retire as early as possible, to avoid embarrassment... CURRENTLY HE NEVER WIN ANY CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR..
I like nadal a lot, mainly his playstyle. But I keep hoping everytime to watch Federer top Nadal since it's become so one sided. No doubt Nadal has Fed's number but hopefully this changes things.
i'm roger no 1 fan and wish he can overcame his nemesis at roland garros this year. with big name like nadal, murry and davydenko exit, maybe it's bit easier for him this time, and one more thing, be careful with monfils, look what he done againts roddick.
nadal is really the number 1 for now no doubt about that and i am really sorry for him because i wanted him to go to the final against roger... i am a roger fan and even though he wins the french open it would have been great for them to have an other final... where federer wins its last grand slam he needs... any way today rogers match was really entertainment he came back 2 sets down I really want him to winthis one and get number 1 of ATP in wibledon... thanks Rafa and Federer for this tennis
I watched this match from scratch... and it was true that Roger very seldom executed his backhand slice, so Nadal just couldn't find an effective way to attack. Roger's finally found away to crush Nadal...
i seems as u dnt know how it has been for fed against nadal in clay court matches. as we all know nadal has only lost five matches on clay and one of them was aginst fed in hamburg 07 right before FO. And after his win ppl were like fed gonna win and all but what happend? nadal won. and the same will happen this year. And we got to think that fed will meet competiotion before the finals against nadal.
i play tennis since i'm 6 years now 29 and one shot that's really annoying and hard to return is when you're standing far behind the baseline and your opponent plays a short flat fore or backhand not a stop right in the middle of the court!
the thing is the ball doesn't really bounce,by the way your opponent swings you don't really see it coming and because of all that you have no time to adjust to the ball you can only more lift than hit it in front of your body!...
1)it's good for federers confidence to have won in madrid but at the same time they both knew of nadals handicap because of the djokovic match!madrid is higher and it's faster than paris,so these advantages federer won't have,on the other hand federer finally starts to try new things which makes it really exciting again!let's see if it works out but i doubt it especially after the acacuso match!
nadal's just to strong on clay in my opinion but i hope i'm wrong!..
i think federer needs to stop trying to beat nadal at his own game and mix it up, He did have a big advantage with Nadal being tired but, i think he has a better chance of wining this tournament than last year because Nadal will be weary of the competition and will not want to face, murray or djokovic who have given him tough matches, but i dont think he will fazed through the loss to federer.
I think you are right... I do agree to your comment about the reason why you think federer will win the french open this time... a) confidence from the recent win in madrid b.) PERFECT PICK - he did have a strategy against Nadal as we saw in Madrid.. it was not one of those matches where Nadal was too tired and Federer was in his peak.. Federer seemed more calculative and moved his steps measured...
I think you are right and brilliant observation on the 'faking volley'... i agree
one win against nadal and everybody thinks federer is gonna win...how stupid you have to be to think of that...yea i agree federer will be more confident this time around but I am sure nadal has notice Federer's change of strategies against him and he will do his best to change his strategy a bit too. Also I think djvok has a better chance of beating nadal than federer. GO RAFA.
you have a strong claime but weak evidence, its not as easy as just saying it to change your strategy, you are obviously a rafa supporter, and that would explain your arogance to realise that there is plain evidence that would show that federer has a very good chance.
this guy is just a biased nadal fan that cannot comprehend or realize that federer has finally found the way to beat nadal in this surface.. I mean, nadal plays very defensive and with the slow speed of this surface, he gets a lot of help from his high topspin; but now federer's new strategy will just completely suppress nadals game like he did in his very own home-country.
Objectively speaking, even though he is the 4th time defending champion at rolad garros and the supposedly king of clay, I seriously doubt he can prevail over federer now in this surface, plus the fact that federer now knows that he can beat nadal in his surface, clay, without a problem. The same goes for grass; I hope Wimbledons final is federer-nadal again, this time nadal wont have a chance. I doubt his over-the-head reverse fancy forehand will help him this time..
Man you rock!

I heard he has slight tendinitis in one knee and mild-severe tendinitis in his other. So he should really ease off because the only way to really get better is rest. Just think Kevin Garnett and the Celtics this year and what happened with him coming back too soon. We don't want to see Rafa trying to come back at US Open and getting badly injured.
amorat627 2 years ago
Anyways Rafa should get him some rest and skip the US Open and not return until the Australian Open so he is absolutely 100% and not 80% because the way that Nadal plays he always has to be at least at 95% to win a Grandslam.
amorat627 2 years ago
is he really that badly injured?
thetrickster123456 2 years ago
So in the end you were right but for all the wrong reasons. Fed beat Nadal because Nadal was already injured and just was ignoring what his body was telling him and paid for it in the FO and Wimbledon. He should have never played Madrid. He reagravated his injury against Novac in Madrid. In addition he had reagravated that injury before in another tournament, i think it was Rotterdam or Miami?
amorat627 2 years ago
It's Nadal's fault that he needs to run like a rabbit instead of gaining points like federer with max 4 shots.Nadal needs 7-8 to make point, so it's no doubt Federer is better.nadal will retire around 29 years old, that to be optimistic
SergheiRO 2 years ago
its just different style of playing. federer's game is definitely more clean, and less grinding than most of the guys on tour(except serve and volleyer.)

Then again, Nadal's beat him 13 out of 18 times they've played, so your point doesn't really make sense, get your head out of Federer's ass faggot.
sauceyboy 2 years ago
Federer has defeated Nadal 7 times, not 5 as you say, you moron...
mariomarcano 2 years ago 2
Let me use some simple math, so that you understand why Federer is over all better. (of course, that depends is you WANT to understand)
A beats B - C - D - E and F
G beats A
G is not better than A. A is still the best :)

rtezsudhnmbvdkmfjgnw 2 years ago 5
I think another huge statistic for Federer was his break points saved and his break points converted stats. Those were HUGE in his history against Nadal. Usually you see Nadal convert a lot of those, especially on clay. Most games where Nadal pulls a break point on Federer, he will win the game. And a lot of the times, Federer can get 10 break points on Nadal IN ONE GAME and still not convert. This time, we have Federer pulling 2/2 and Nadal pulling 0/4. It ties in well with the service numbers.
Oreoclan 2 years ago
you are right. In Melbourne it was just as you say. Fed could not convert his breakpoints. Why? Maybe because Nadal, as a lefty, can serve on breakpoint from his choclate side onto Fed´s backhand.
ulizinho 2 years ago
Roger wasnt returnign well enough on the ad court that day and couldnt back up his breaks cause of his serve

Nadals out of wimbledon! That means if fed wins (which he will, fingers crossed =D) he will be #1
thetrickster123456 2 years ago 2
Well, actually, I think that he needs to win winbledon, and he needs Nadal to lose in the quarterfinals of Rogers Cup.
Markiash 2 years ago
If roger wins he reclaims number one due to nadal loosing 2000 points for not defend his title putting him at 10637 something if roger wins he gets and extra 600 points on top of his defending runner up so there for goes to 11000 something poitns reclaiming it Funny how they may switch again in the same simliar time frame
alywen06 2 years ago
Oh indeed. I had forgotten that points a deducted for not defending a title.
Hope Federer can do it.

wow buddy, you predicted it correctly. amazing analysis. keep going.
814sasi 2 years ago
no but nadal has become a great all-round player, on grass over the years, he has beaten federer now in a grand slam in hard court, and pretty convincingly..and fed didn't look close to spectacular in the french open...in a grand slam, nadal always has the edge, fed is becoming too weak, nadal's hunger will let him lift the trophy once again.
arjunk89 2 years ago
who do you think will win wimbledon 2009? no analysis for that yet, also take into consider nadal's knees and fed's rising confidence...but i still think fed doesn't have it in the head to beat nadal in wimbledon...wat do u guys think?
arjunk89 2 years ago
federer almost beat nadal last year when he was suffered from mono virus. federer beat nadal 2 times in wimbledon. Federer will beat nadal again.
polychronio 2 years ago 2
he beat him two yaers in a row!!!!!
come on in those finals he beat nadal playing magnificent
pepe00iz 2 years ago
Are you serious?! Fed doesn't have it in the head to beat Nadal at WIMBLEDON?! You're out of your mind. Wimbledon is the one that Federer THINKS he can beat Nadal more than any other surface. Grass is Federer's BEST surface. Nadal has beaten Federer multiple times on clay, and 2 (maybe 3. I'm not 100 sure on that.) on hardcourt. ONCE on grass. For me, I'd be pretty confident that I could beat him on the grass. I pick Federer to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.
robert5191986 2 years ago
It´s really funny how fed fans get so carried away and lose any perspective.............Ok, Fed won two slams in a row and i have to give him credit but if we break those wins down, Nadal wasn´t around and fed didn´t beat any top four seeded to conquest those slams. Besides Fed didn´t play his best to beat the one dimensional roddick in wimbledon´s final. Now you fed fanatics think roger is gonna win 3 slams every year for the next five years hahaha, what about competition and age, Nadal?
juandi2570 2 years ago
Well Nadal's play with a lot of Power. that's why when he gets old he can't maintain the level of tennis he is playing right now. Unlike Federer which relies on technique not on power. thats why in later years Federer can still play High level tennis. look at Nadal now. He got injured because he hussles to much on every point.
groundzero1441 2 years ago 4
Im not doubting Fed can play at a high level but Fed will never be as dominant as he was in his prime years(04-07), not gonna happen...

excellent analysis. and very much correct. and its again nice that you predicted Federer's rising performance on clay this season and predicting his first french open. Cause many were of the opinion that he would loose to jokovich in semi final. But i persoanlly think that he would have beaten any one this time in the finals.

Dude,
I can't believe you were right about Fed winning the French open. You said it before it even started! I was pleasently surprised! Good pointers on your website keep it up...
umbirdo 2 years ago 3
I think the main reason Fed won was we didn't see much of Nadal's forehand grinding to Fed's backhand. Fed changed his game plan to prevent this well as its the only obstacle that prevent him beating Nadal.

No doubt Nadal has Fed's number but hopefully this changes things.
infamswun 2 years ago 3
i'm roger no 1 fan and wish he can overcame his nemesis at roland garros this year. with big name like nadal, murry and davydenko exit, maybe it's bit easier for him this time, and one more thing, be careful with monfils, look what he done againts roddick.
myrollandbuzz 2 years ago
nadal is really the number 1 for now no doubt about that and i am really sorry for him because i wanted him to go to the final against roger... i am a roger fan and even though he wins the french open it would have been great for them to have an other final... where federer wins its last grand slam he needs... any way today rogers match was really entertainment he came back 2 sets down I really want him to winthis one and get number 1 of ATP in wibledon... thanks Rafa and Federer for this tennis

i seems as u dnt know how it has been for fed against nadal in clay court matches. as we all know nadal has only lost five matches on clay and one of them was aginst fed in hamburg 07 right before FO. And after his win ppl were like fed gonna win and all but what happend? nadal won. and the same will happen this year. And we got to think that fed will meet competiotion before the finals against nadal.
863357 2 years ago
4)..another thing federer should try because nadal is always far behind the baseline,it's more annoying than a stop and doesn't give nadal rhythm!
cheers
thomas from austria
samoht500 2 years ago
3)last thoughts:
i play tennis since i'm 6 years now 29 and one shot that's really annoying and hard to return is when you're standing far behind the baseline and your opponent plays a short flat fore or backhand not a stop right in the middle of the court!
the thing is the ball doesn't really bounce,by the way your opponent swings you don't really see it coming and because of all that you have no time to adjust to the ball you can only more lift than hit it in front of your body!...
samoht500 2 years ago
2)first of all he has to reach the final though!
djokovic will be very,very tough!
samoht500 2 years ago
1)it's good for federers confidence to have won in madrid but at the same time they both knew of nadals handicap because of the djokovic match!madrid is higher and it's faster than paris,so these advantages federer won't have,on the other hand federer finally starts to try new things which makes it really exciting again!let's see if it works out but i doubt it especially after the acacuso match!
nadal's just to strong on clay in my opinion but i hope i'm wrong!..
samoht500 2 years ago
excellent analysis...throw in a couple of videos to illustrate your points and that will be like the cherry on top of the sundae
entermcbeth 2 years ago
i think federer needs to stop trying to beat nadal at his own game and mix it up, He did have a big advantage with Nadal being tired but, i think he has a better chance of wining this tournament than last year because Nadal will be weary of the competition and will not want to face, murray or djokovic who have given him tough matches, but i dont think he will fazed through the loss to federer.
Eddj878 2 years ago
I think you are right... I do agree to your comment about the reason why you think federer will win the french open this time... a) confidence from the recent win in madrid b.) PERFECT PICK - he did have a strategy against Nadal as we saw in Madrid.. it was not one of those matches where Nadal was too tired and Federer was in his peak.. Federer seemed more calculative and moved his steps measured...
I think you are right and brilliant observation on the 'faking volley'... i agree
kumarramachandran 2 years ago
one win against nadal and everybody thinks federer is gonna win...how stupid you have to be to think of that...yea i agree federer will be more confident this time around but I am sure nadal has notice Federer's change of strategies against him and he will do his best to change his strategy a bit too. Also I think djvok has a better chance of beating nadal than federer. GO RAFA.
karan631 2 years ago
you have a strong claime but weak evidence, its not as easy as just saying it to change your strategy, you are obviously a rafa supporter, and that would explain your arogance to realise that there is plain evidence that would show that federer has a very good chance.

haha you papo..!
this guy is just a biased nadal fan that cannot comprehend or realize that federer has finally found the way to beat nadal in this surface.. I mean, nadal plays very defensive and with the slow speed of this surface, he gets a lot of help from his high topspin; but now federer's new strategy will just completely suppress nadals game like he did in his very own home-country.
arreazaman 2 years ago
Objectively speaking, even though he is the 4th time defending champion at rolad garros and the supposedly king of clay, I seriously doubt he can prevail over federer now in this surface, plus the fact that federer now knows that he can beat nadal in his surface, clay, without a problem. The same goes for grass; I hope Wimbledons final is federer-nadal again, this time nadal wont have a chance. I doubt his over-the-head reverse fancy forehand will help him this time..

not to mention his awesome serve LOL
