holy shit its Dave Canterbury the bad ass who sliced himself open and poured black powder in his wound and lit it on fire.. just to see what would happen.
Not to pick nits but I believe that is Duluth's "Wanderer" pack. The "Rambler" is slightly larger and features a zippered front pocket instead of the straps.
Thanks for all the great vids, information, and inspiration!
Adirondacks are still the same way, plenty of water, streams and lakes, i live right in the foothills of the dacks and have spent every summer since i can remember there, i will have to look into this book, one thing i can say about the Adirondacks, it is very scerene and beautiful, but its very unforgiving and you need to know what your doing, or else is very VERY easy to get lost
@1gamoguy if there anything like the southern appalachian mountian's,they're treacherous!!!!...........i live in the foothill's of the blueridge myself
@smartacus88 lol never been to the appalachians, but they are dense thick, swamps in some parts, mostly just thick moss cover that cant hold anymore water from natural springs, but still stink, timber rattlers, though their venom is not as toxic as other rattlers, bobcats, mountain lions, black bears, moose, and deer... pretty much everything someone could want that wants to live in gods country away from the suburbia more and more of the countryside is turning into
I always wind up making thin strips. that fold really easy, then ill pack it in my cheek and chew kinda like how you thought chewing tobacco was as a kid.
Really enjoy your videos Dave, thanks. Suggestion on smoking jerky or hides is to make a tripod out of green willow or dogwood or cedar....nothing poison. Then tie sticks to each tripod and you can move it to the smoke, spread legs more or less for heat and have slender sharpend longer sticks to go across the tripod and shove them through the meat and let it hang down. Move the sticks full of hanging meat...up or down as needed. It works well because it is all adjustable and portable.
Dave, You need to tool up on your wind direction before you build a fire. So it is not blowing where you sit or at your camera. Smoke is unburned fuel filled with carcinogens. (Cancer Causing Poison) Use Plastic Zip locks and shake and bake your seasoning in.

Isn't that too much of a seasoning? Wouldn't it be too salty/spicy which then will lead to great amont of water usage, cause You'll feel thirst? Other than that, it's awesome video, makes me hungry every time I watch it :)
I have only just discovered your videos and I think they are great. On the subject of Nessmuk you should read " Canoeing the Adirondacks with Nessmuk " this is a modern book that features Nessmuks articles for Field and Stream I think or possibly Forest and Stream. They give a far more rounded picture of Nessmuks activities in the wilderness where he was quite a hunter and pioneer of lightweight canoes.
i have a question for dave or anyone who can answer it for me what kind of branches should be used when laying meat on them as a rack over the fire it looks like you are useing plum branches.......? thanks Tanner
if you want a double bladed camp axe hunt around for a smaller double bit head and put a shorter shaft on it. thanks for mentioning that to because there is an old double bit head in my grand mothers shed that hasn't been used in forever and heeds a new shaft
he did it like a tube so he could use it as a backpack as well since you stuff it and just tie the 2 ends closed thats what my greatgrandfather did in the bush
I have 20 acres of land in the adirondecks, with a 12' wide creek running though it and a few smaller ones. I've stuck my face in that creek many many times and drank, and never got sick or even felt the littlest bit funny afterwards.
Another great vid Dave, thanks.I have just read Nessmuk's book and a good read it is.You are right in saying that it slightly different to emulate his style of bushcraft particularly with water treatment.Another man whose bush skill i admire is Colonel Townsend Whelen.Similar minamilist approach to his kit.Keep up the good work!
If u google (The $10 Jerky Maker) theres good plans for doing it at home with a bulb and a box.Means u can go out and carry on with ure day.Worth doing as all commercial Jerky is actual cooked b4 drying.Which takes away from its nutritional value.Plus they add fake smoke taste.Which is nasty.
American Tomahawk makes a Nessmuk tac axe that looks sweet. one edge for chopping the other for light work. It weighs in at 18 oz out of sheath, although not traditional materials it looks like it could take a beating and its US made, which I like.
i do believe that Nessmuk mentioned that he used a butchers knife for his own knife. the only tools i take out with me with the addition of the bacho saw
I have a two headed axe. I'd tell you who makes it if I can ever find it in my shop. When I was a kid I used to see them throw them on tv. Its old and is a realy good choping axe.
If you got the money, for a good double bladed hunting knife, I would go for a Case Folding Hunter. They are little more expensive, but have a lifetime warranty, and in my opinion, you just can't beat a Case.
Dave you should check out mlknives, Mike makes a pretty good repro of Nessmuk's knife outta 1095 carbon at a dang good price. Thanks for the jerky info, I've never tried to make it outdoors before.
This is the reason, I keep a fillet knife in the kit. Never know when you need thin slices of anything from wood to meat, where a thicker bladed knife will hamper your progress by comparison.
double bit axes are very useful as they are better balanced than single bit axes and you can keep different edges on either bit for different tasks e.g one thicker for splitting and one thinner for limbing. Having said that they definately require more practice to use due to the inherent danger of having a blade facing you while working. Dave great job as usual - you are such an inspiration and a truly unique character. Many thanks from the UK.
lol, I was looking for part 2, I'm assuming its not uploaded yet. I really enjoy your videos alot, keep em' coming, I love this survivalist stuff. You're very well knowledged & well spoken

pine needles might give it a weird taste. Remember that the smoke goes into and permeates the meat. Thus youll taste the smoke and whatever is in it.

When smoking meat will it keep for a long time that way?
Dose the salt added to it work as a cure to cure the meat?
Should a person that is planing to keep the meat for a good lenth of time add cure to the rub as an added precotion?
clackclack2 2 years ago
cut it super thin and smoke it for a long time salt does help dry it out but basicly its just get it rock hard and it last almost for ever

Regarding the Double Headed Ax mentioned at 10:10.
Lee Valley Tools of Canada sells Iltis Oxhead Axes (and one that is Double-Bit).
On the Lee Valley Tools Website - Under Woodworking ---> Log Building - you should be able to access information regarding Iltis Oxhead Axes

For your double bit hand axe
research either double bit cedar axe or double bit tomahawk
both should give you what you are looking for. for best quality look for an old cedar axe on ebay. they used to be common until 1970's. head is 2 lbs
