  • It's not a shame for it to be covered by other artists, though I can hardly imagine anybody doing it better than sylvian/sakomoto.

But it let it be covered by true artists who know how to break through to the essence of a song; instead of sexy, corporate, model singers!

  • She sounds like Kate Bush doing a David Sylvian doing a Brian Ferry......

  • take a masterpiece out of the hands of masterpiece-makers (Sakomoto/Sylvian)

hand it to a pop-chick-diva (fill in the blank with any female name) and you'll descend from grand artistry to shallow marketing machinery!

That's what chick singers these days are good for

  • @arfineevents sarah brightman is not just some pop singer. She is iconic in the world of broadway and she is a respected professional singer.

  • I love this! She is so different from any other singer... she is truly a pro vocalist. I swear there is nothing Sarah can't sing.

  • Profanity to the song. It seems she don't know the things she should never do.

  • good music! no' video!

  • usually i havent been interested in this world famous(and let's say) commercial singer, but I highly appreciate this track, being a fun of Sakamoto.I found it by chance now and it surprised me.I love the way of her quiet singing which doesnt go to dramatize the melody on cheap way. Even I would say I prefer this version to Sylvian's... but please understand me you Sylvian funs, the taste of music is individual and in freedom.

  • i dont think so.......

  • lay off the cymbals please drummer . Otherwise not bad , I think the meaning is changes somewhat but thats ok.

  • I love this song!!! Sarah Brightman is amazing! <3

  • As much as i love Sarah Brightman, you don't mess with a David Sylvian/ Japan track. I am in love with the original Sylvian/ Sakamoto track, this just seems amaturish.

  • i like the old version, but i love this version even more

  • Almost had a heart attack learning that she covered this...I think the song is fine either way. Its different from the original, but she does it justice.

  • Shot the Drummer !!!!!

  • i actually think this is a good take...

    different from the original..

but as us irish say 'how bad'...............

  • Dreadful!

  • Very beautiful song and video...Thank you, Zuzanna

  • A tam fajne....Piękne!

  • Nothing can beat the original - this should stay a David Sylvian song

  • terrible version of a brilliant song

  • yeah this sounds terrible

  • Does anyone know th Name of th artist of th Portrait with th crown of thorns and the baby?

  • this is proof that you can absolutely spoil/kill one of the best songs ever. the haunting voice of david sylvian and music of sakamoto will never be beaten!!!

  • There are just so many things in this version that go wrong... 1) The symbals. 2) Too much reverb on Brightman's voice, drums, and of course, the horrendous symbals. 3) The harp/hammered dulcimer-like sound starting at 0:56 just does not capture the emotion behind this song. 4) The balance among the different tracks in this mixing is aweful, e.g. the strings and the vocals miserably destroying the piano line starting around 3:42. As a result, the sensitivity of the original is all lost.

  • @AWfan52525 totaly agree

  • Much as I like Sarah Brightman, I think this is an extremely difficult song to cover well, it will always be compared to the haunting, iconic Sylvian/Sakamoto original, which is a very tough act to follow.

  • The imagery is just so off. However, I like the cover.

  • <3

live life fully with all colours...

    no colours forbidden...

    <3

SB... understands this more than most give her credit for...

and the song speaks to many... especially of 'varied colours'...

and yes, this includes the 'forbidden' ones of the LGBTIQ2...

  • God her voice is sooo sexy! LOVE this song!

  • It's nice to see so much recognition for this song from so many other artists, and their personal twists. With that said, I'd have to say that Ryuichi's live trio version is the best of all, with his original synthesizer version a very close 2nd.

  • I love the original versions (Soundtrack & Beehive), but this is pretty cheesy and hollow in comparison, especially in the instrumentation. Sure, Sarah Brightman can hit the notes and all, but tonally or delivery-wise there's no magic here for me. I bet Kate Bush could nail it, though!

  • I had no idea Brightman covered this song. I love her and I love this song, so of course I think it's amazing. Thanks for posting!

  • i agree that sylvians version is the best but this girl has done a good job on a great song. she is a brilliant singer. not as good as some but better than most.

  • I prefer Sakamoto, but this is great too.

  • Sorry but this is rape on a great song from sakamoto and sylvian.

  • terrible, kitschy version, to be expected from this musical singer

as for this song having nothing to do with christianity - here are some of the lyrics

"the wounds on your hands never seem to heal"

    "the blood of christ"

"millions are willing to give their lives for you"

  • to smooth -

  • wow her voice is so beautiful.

    love you sarah brightman

  • I prefer the Sakamoto Version.....

  • such an absolutely gorgeous voice!

  • I was expecting this to be terrible & embarrassing. It's actually OK.

  • Lagu yang sangat bagus!

  • Very Nice : it's like a...lounge version for me!

But i'm agree with nikimovies.. Jesus christ' pictures are strange...absolutely nothing to do with this song.. it's not the good atmosphere...

  • most songs are love songs in one way or another......sorry if this sounds so generic but i believe it to be true..a beautiful melody, coda, motif...etc ..this is the science behind making music and this tune, as they say in hollywood, had it all.

  • Crucifixtion?

  • I don't like it so much but I love the original version so I'm not so obiettive

  • The grating synth sound (which I guess is supposed to resemble bell-like harmonics above the piano) plays B natural instead of C at 0:07 - 0:09, brilliant reharmonisation. Can anyone tell me if there's a scorching blues guitar solo later on, I can't bring myself to listen further.

  • @ifihaf2

    No scorching blues git'tar.

    Just more megawankery

  • Sarah Brightman has a beautiful voice, still a bit too soft for this song. The arrangements here are awful compared to those in the original by Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Sylvian.

  • when i lonely...my medicine

  • this song is superb, I agree on the fact that it has nothing to do with Jesus Christ history...so this video surely does not give to the song its real atmosphere....anyway, this is only my personal view of that. If you want, try to give a look to my video..... ;-)

  • god this is awful! pity the phantom didnt top the daffy cow!

  • No no no - this is wrong on so many levels.

  • this song is very nice!!! and the image too, thanks for this!!!!!

  • I'm searching for the midifile or karaoke mp3 version of this song, EXACTLY of this song (so, only piano bass accompainment when singing, strings accompainment). Anyone knows where to find it?

  • I'm Italian and my english is not very god....

    Very beatiful song but

This video is not vey good for it... it's orrible!.. ah

  • Wonderful of the singing of David Sylvian was recognized again.

  • OMG this sucks, sorry.....

  • I've always wanted to watch the movie... Now I must.

  • qualcuno sa tradurla?

  • Comment removed

  • qualcuno sa tradurla in italiano???

  • and the title of the movie?

    can i know it?

  • Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence

  • i love sarah and her other pieces. she sang beautifully. but i would rather hear the original sylvian for this.

  • like it

  • Words cannot express the disgust I feel with Sarah Brightman for taking something divinely beautiful and heartwrenching, and making it -mediocre-. This cover is nothing but the contrived bastard offspring of true beauty.

  • Couldn't agree more with you!

I love you Sarah and I love this song!

  • Such a great song given such a bland easy listening set of clothes. Not good, not bad... but not good!

This song is so iconic for Sylvian/Sakamoto....seems a shame to have it covered by other artists. Hmm oh well.

I agree too that the imagery shown with this song does not capture the true meaning of the lyrics.......by a long shot!

  • @aramanth Can you not hear that she sings it much more clear and light?

  • *changes* i mean xP

  • i love this song but i dont think people should keep adding little changings cause its not working -_-...

  • dogs9220ita : you're so right!!!!!!

Even though i usually like what Sarah Brightman does, this is... Not my kind at all.

'Forbidden Colours' should stay a David Sylvian song, no matter what, forever! Duh

  • A travesty, taking a couple of biblical metaphors and making it into a christian video when it is actually about same sex love. OH the irony!

  • What a gross version of a wonderful and enigmatic track, sung by Sylvian-san! Sakamoto-san, you should ban this version!

  • Whoa! Brightman's mousy version aside... Since this was composed by Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto and the title "Forbidden Colors" seems borrowed from the homoerotic novel by Yukio Mishima, AND this song was part of the soundtrack for director Nagasa Oshima's "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" (a film also full of homoerotic tension between David Bowie and Sakamoto's characters), I think the Christ allusions are metaphoric at best.

  • So smart Thanks!

  • great voice, fucking christian video.

  • I guess Italians aren't Christian anymore...

  • So this song is about christ? does it gots anything to do with mary magdeline too?

    explainations anyone?

  • nah the christ part is just bull.. a travesty to the theme, this song is about a relation between a us man and a japan man while the 2 world war wich ends up pretty badly, recommend the original and the film

  • Your 'us' man was a 'nz' man in the original book. And Bowie certainly did not portray an American, either.

  • Bowie's character (Celliers) was a South African in the original novel. I suspect it may have been changed to a NZer in the film either for political reasons or because Bowie couldn't hack the accent.

The Lawrence of the title is a Brit in both the book and the film. No Americans in either.

  • If you read the book (or watch the film again) you'll see that it has nothing to do with anyone from the US and the Christ bit draws on a vision that the narrator has in the book.

  • I agree, it has nothing at all to do with the story of Jesus . . . kind of disturbs me that it was interepreted this way, I like the Sarah Brightman version, but not this video.

  • She enunciates extremely well. I love Sylvian but I could understand Sarah better.

  • How

  • I find this very beautiful and haunting..

  • why did she do this its wrong

  • because she did the same with dulce with hooverphonics with simon & garfunkel... and the list goes on

  • I remember watching the special features on Sarah's La Luna DVD and they play this song and I always wondered what it was but now I've found it!

  • The original song was composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto and sang by David Sylvian.

  • Sarah has a beautiful voice but it sounds like she is reading the words off a page - perfunctory/mechanical. When David sings it, you can tell he wrote those words.

  • Yeah, you are SOOO right. He wrote these words, and they sound personal. Sarah Brightman has never really done anything. I don't particularly have anything against her, her voice is serviceable, but yeah in singing this song, it's positively hollow.

For millions of David Sylvian fans, there's just no Sarah Brightman. Sorry.

  • I have sex with ponies? What!!??

  • great singing!Much better than the original version!

    :)

  • You`re completely right*.*!! <3 I just heard the original version and i have to say that Sarah`s Version is much better than the one from David Sylvian :D I just don!t like his voice o don`t say he`s bad, but for me Sarah`s Version is the Best!! <3

  • Sarah's got a beautiful voice, one of the greatest female voices in the world but once a song is sung by Sylvian... no one can compare to him

  • SOOO true!

  • doea anyone knows fushigi yuugi?

If I'm not mistaken this song was used in the OVA series of fushigi yuugi entitled moonless night Tsuki no nai Yoru by Satou Akemi...

the point is does anyone noticed its similarities when it comes to its tune and its arrangements...

  • Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I heard it almost immidiately after she sang her first verse.

  • sounds so beautiful!

  • no comparison with sylvian deep voice...

  • Yea, I'm sorry, but sylvian's voice is squeeky and almost deafening.. Sakamoto is one hell of a composer! And Brightman is simply incomparable!

  • If you wish not for your favourite musician to be insulted, do not insult others.

  • Get a life wanker

  • Get a brain, or alternatively, grow up.

  • Its such a shame that someone is allowed to use a computer when they are obviously so backward, Miss Brightman was a member of a dance troupe called Hot Gossip until she married Andrew Lloyd Webber who then gave her singing lessons and a decent break into her then chosen style of music. If you were intelligent you would see I wasnt insulting her I was stating things that actually happened.

  • "Burlesque", "sadly not that good".

Care to tell me if those are "things that actually happened" or negative opinions?

I'm not the one backward here. You obviously are unhappy that someone has differing opinions from you. However, do you think that you are actually fixing things by stating those things about Sarah, or making things worse? Have some time to think about it, "forward" person.

  • And besides, I'm not the one who started using silly words like "wanker" on the other, when my reply wasn't aimed at you only.

The other guy had a part to play in this whole silly argument.

  • Im sure you can if you have the time to, (which you seem to have) look up the timeline for yourself. Im finished with this particular argument. Which I didnt start, I expressed an opinion and YOU told me to get a brain. Whichever country you are from im sure that is classed as an insult and so in turn I insulted you. Now go away little person and learn more about music before you care to elighten the world with you failings

  • Correction; I replied to you in a very diplomatic way at first.

"If you don't wish for your favourite musician..."

which you replied to with your rather insulting "Get a life wanker"

Enlighten the world indeed, music-learned person.

  • I can see English is not your mother tongue so goodbye. And all the best in the future.

  • Why yes, actually. English is my first language, while Mandarin is my mother tongue.

I still fail to see the relevance though, but yes, if you wish to end this, excellent choice.

  • Its all clear now!!!!!!!!!!! Incidently I allways make excellent choices!!

  • After being cast in the original production of Cats, Sarah started to take classical voice lessons. She was subsequently cast in Charles Strauss' children's opera, Nightingale. After hearing the rave reviews she had gotten ALW (remembering her from Cats)attended. SBs Hot Gossip days were long before their relationship.

  • Why are you writing here if you don't like it? better listen to the ones you like and do not start insulting other artists and their work.

    Cheers

  • Who can you know you don't like something without listening to it first?

  • Make yourself understood..I don't understand what are u saying....I was saying if u don't like sth,...better listen to those u like, and not get into that extreme where to sound as an insult, that is about all.Cheers:)

  • That's a bit rich; you may not have understood me, but at least I used normal English. And why do you keep saying 'cheers' at the end of your comments, is it an attempt to sound clever?

  • Enfin. I used it in as a way for you to understand I am not fighting or something, now if you see something else in it...it is not my problem.

  • Make yourself understood...I didn't understand what you were saying. Sound familiar?

  • He/she was saying if you don't like a certain artist, it'll be more advisable to find for the artist you like on Youtube instead, instead of insulting the one you don't.

Additionally, he/she was adding "cheers" at the end not as a mark of trying to be clever, but an attempt to make you understand that he/she does not mean any harm or offense.

It really isn't that hard to understand.

  • If I want advice from you mate it will be about shops that sell cool maples lol

  • Why the agro? People are just trying to be friendly and you are picking fights all by yourself.

  • Do you not believe in holding your own argumentative stance?

  • Don't worry CoolMaple some people like to make things out to be more scandalous than they were. Posh Papers had a field day making it seem that way too.

  • Oh so you were there and are able to disregaurd the so called Posh papers of the time. Those of us who lived on their doorsteps knew all the rumours right or wrong. Its great to re open the debate as it was at the time

  • Are you for some reason angry with Ms. Brightman and her fans. You hold Hot Gossip against her? Something she did at 17. Yes it was silly, and they always love playing clips in her interviews. Not many who had carrers in the 70s and 80s can get away without something embarrassing coming up.

  • Not at all, however as I am sure you will no doubt agree, some songs become iconic and only sound right when they are performed by the original singer (Imagine , John Lennon, My way, Frank Sinatra) that was my original argument and thus this particular track only sounds right sung by David Sylvian. Thats my opinion I know and everyone is entitled to there own. Incidently I believe she was older than 17 when I saw her in Hot Gossip! if the content of the live show was to go by!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree with you on your first point some songs are untouchable. However in my opinion Sarah did a beautiful haunting cover of this song. I believe Sarah was 17 when she joined in 1977 and 18 the year Starship Trooper was recorded. She left a couple years later.

  • I saw Hot gossip when I was about 21 as I was with a particular girlfriend at the time who was v miffed at me for taking her to the show because of the content, it was at Blazers in Windsor, that was 1983. So I can honestly say I was and am a fan, I have also seen Mr sylvian in concert many times. Opinions are formed better and stronger if you can honestly say you have spent good money seeing these people in the flesh. I am a fan of both, but Sylvian remains my number 1

  • Great video, great song but...sakamoto and sylvian are best!

  • video stupendoooooooooooooooooooo bravissimi a montarlo

  • Comment removed

  • Sorry but this version is absolutely rightman but who ever recommended she sing this song need fired . totally wrong key , very tinny vocal , arrangement all wrong aswell .

Some songs should be left alone and preserved by the original artist , in this case David sylvian ? Sakamoto

  • Sarah, You have a beautiful voice. I totally understand why you chose to sing this song. I really love it too, but in my opinion you should have left it the way it was and is, sung by David Sylvian!

  • so beautiful,

    and something deep.

  • So touching...great...I have no idea to describe.

  • OMG~!

    Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence~!

  • Beautiful video too!

  • I have only ever heard sylvian sing this,i love this version, where can i get it from?

  • i love

  • My favourite female voice - Sarah Brightman.

My favourite male voice - David Sylvian.

(click on the side link to hear the original by David Sylvian and R. Sakamoto)

    rose0rose- thank you for adding.

    :)

  • This song was originally recorded for the CD "La Luna"

  • I love this Song, I love Sarah Brightman
