These mummies are from Guanajuato, Mexico where there is a mummy museum. People are naturally mummified in the adjacent cemetery and when graves are not maintained, they are exhumed. Most are from the above-ground vaults. The museum exhibits over 100 of the over 1000 mummies. This is not filmed in the museum itself. Just FYI you can buy 'mummy candy' as you exit the museum.
This is completely eerie and hypnotic--suitable for the feel of a vampire. I remember how creepy (yet beautiful) I found this when I first saw it--and nothing's changed. Love this opening.
Great intro!!! I am proud of this because this mummies are in my country Guanajuato in Mexico. The mummy at 0.50 is the corpse of a woman buried alive!!! this is true, very scary. at 0.10 is the smallest mummy in the world, a baby child newborn.
There's something about those mummies, and the music, and the heartbeat, the slow-motion flying bat, and the beautiful Isabelle Adjani's final scream that freezes me blood and sends chills crawling up me spine...
A memorable yet underestimated intro of a unique homage of an immortal masterpiece.
OK, the intro is actually a load of mummies that go up in age order; Herzog saw them in a museum and wanted to put them into the intro to give a creepy atmosphere to the film from the start. I don't know if they are meant to be the previous people that Nosferatu fed on.
The best intro for a vampire film ever. It is indelible. I will always remember this film because it was one of the first film to come on to the then new channel 4.
I was seven then, so I bloody well never would forget it. Popol Vuh produces the best soundtrack to a vampire film, since Krystof Komeda's Fearless Vampire Killers.
Esta película es genial. La vi por vez primera cuando era un niño y me fascino su extraña atmósfera y lenguaje tan introspectivo. Guarda un lugar privilegiado en mi videoteca.
The greatest horror story opening in film... The music (chillingly) initiates a sense of evil, uncanny and unutterably old. A feeling of the long-dead exudes from the mummies...and, at the same time, the chanting underscores a dread, a strange sense of 'alive and not alive'...feelings Klaus Kinski conveys in the movie as much as its startling art direction and director Werner Herzog's visionary force as a director. Great and too often underrated...
@NihilisticSliceshow To answer your question, I'd say both are worth watching. This remake is one of the best there is of any film, in my opinion; it's about 95-98% as good as the original.
great example of vampire movie....please take a look to Murnau's original too,the masterpiece of all this type of cinema. This is fantastic, for me is relaxing too, especially during Harker's trip to Dracula's castle
Here's the music: Richard Wagner, the Reingold Prelude. It's from the opera Der Ring des Nibelungen from Wagner, 1851. This opera last for about 15 hours and has 4 parts: Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung. The story is based on Noorwegian myths and the German Nibelungen. Wilhelm Richard Wagner (born in Leipzig, 22 mei 1813 – Venetië, 13 februari 1883) was a German composer.

One of the best productions ever made. Got the German version. Kinski was exhausted afterwards. Decades later you see Bruno Ganz as the Führer in Der Untergang............" Ich liebe die Schatten und die Dunkelheit, dort wo Ich mit meine Gedanken allein sein kann ".
You are so right! This film is masterpiece. I have seen many, many vampire films and read many of the books. This is the best vampire film of all time. This is of course only my opinion..
The music and the images are phenomenal, but the acting...well... But strangely enough, it somehow works. It makes the film weirder and indeed scarier.
Great movie with the best intro ever made. Bruno Ganz is starring Johnatan Harker. Almost 25 years later he played Hitler in Der Untergang. Kinski was completly empty after playing his part in this masterpiece. Isabelle Adjani later soulmated Jean Michelle Jarre. Part of the movie was shot in Leiden (Holland) Officials over there had lots of difficulties keeping the rats, used in the last part, together. Movie is hard to find. I got the German and Englisch version. Lucky me
I saw this movie when I was about nine, shortly after it came out. After those opening credits and Kinski's performance, how the hell could I be expected to take "Twilight" seriously?
Of course, Twilight its a commercial crap. Movies like Nosferatu or Dracula from Bram Stokers are the real vampire movies, when the greatest makeup work cause magic and no stupid cool boys.
Amen, amen. Stephen King, Anne Rice and Herzog should have an intervention to tell her what a real vampire story is. This is my favorite vampire movie bar none!
Stephen King created one of the most chilling vampire stories ever, Anne Rice revolutionized their suave yet scary style... but Nosferatu (at least the 1922 version) showed us pure evil incarnate. Truly horrifying vision of a vampire...
this is one of the creepiest openings to a horror movie I've ever seen. i saw this movie when i was like 12 and i don't remember seeing the whole thing, but this part always stuck in my mind. its just so eerie.
Oh my god, that was really creepy and sad. Does anyone know how those mummies got to be mummies? I mean, they have high heels and stuff... But they all look so scared and sad, like they knew what was happening...
The mummies are real, Im supossed have filmed this scene in one of hundred catacumbs in Europe, maybe Italy, France or a rare case, in Germany. The process of mommyfication respond of a medieval usual manage of Plome(sorry my english sucks) this toxic metal repel the descomposition of body and preserv many parts of the flesh.
Yes, is in Guanajuato. and have one movie of my country named "Blue Demon and Mil Mascaras versus mmumies of Guanajuato, filmed in these catacombs precisely.
@YellowTurtle13...Yes, when I first saw this movie, the mummies reminded me of Holocaust victims. I later found out they're the mummies of the citizens of Guanajuato, Mexico, who died during a cholera outbreak in 1833.
I loved this movie even as it proceeded to scare the pants off me. But there is one thing that his driven me batty (pun intended): Where exactly did they find all those dessicated corpses/mummies?
They had no need to find anything: Klaus Kinski does not act, he is! He does not play his roles he lives his roles and so he actually was the Nosferatu during the prelude and making of this movie and me still be it; anyway: This corpses can be found in the Kinski Lair in Germany, where I saw them myself. So may the Black Death and the army of the rats be with you!
@zedizdeadbaby yes its melody sounds very simple...but the texture is very complex. it sounds like something hat someone had been making for a long time..
Thank you for that share on the music score, fabulous composing, it gave it a macabre feature, and the superb chioce of European locations. A film to inspire many ideas.
