To have a proper LOTR vs Star Wars face off I think you would really need to consider the books as well. There are definitely some aspects of Star Wars that kick ass, but LOTR is better as a whole on just about every level. There's really no point arguing about whether LOTR is better or whether Star Wars is. Generally both are considered great, with many of the people who believe so loving both. Rating two great things against each other is almost impossible. It would be different if the question was "Harry Potter vs Star Wars", Harry Potter is good, but many would agree that it isn't on the same level as Star Wars, therefore it would be easier to generate an argument that suggests Star Wars > Harry Potter.

I love what Jackson has done with the films but the Oscars don't really matter in this comparison. 20 years ago it was heresy to even consider a fantasy or scifi film for an Oscar. I don't really think that Lord of the Rings is hella awesome, but Star Wars is on the same boat. They're both pretty good, but there's better Fantasy and Sci-Fi stories out there. Even J.R.R. Tolkien didn't like the Lord of the Rings. He admits that the writing didn't turn out very well.

The Hobbit, while a smaller tale and not as epic, was truthfully much better written than LotR.
