Ron was referencing Silent Comedy, specifically the adversaries of Chaplin, Keaton and Harold Lloyd, who often looked like this. Ron never spoke on stage. He never even opened his mouth. Like a silent film comedian he communicated with his expressions. Hitler was a frothing at the mouth, madly gesticulating loon.
And another thing: Sparks weren't GLAM. Russ didn't wear a speck of make up, and the songs are aggressively heterosexual:
Oh, how I LOVE SPARKS! This is one of their best performance-art pieces. They have always been so strong with their originality, and admirably fearless in pushing the artistic barrier, unlike others at that time who were afraid to go 'out of bounds.' (Not counting Bowie, of course.) They paid a price for not going mainstream, but are now finally recieving recognition and respect from new fans and new bands. This is such a cool song.

Its funny how when I saw this for the first time 35 years ago, it never occured to me how gay these brothers are. I was just 15 y/o, but more importantly, the world was different; people just didnt discuss things like that as much......
MrPentium, what the hell are you talking about? The Mael brothers are absolutely not gay. Their may be some stage campness in some of their acts, especially in the early years, but that does not equate to being gay. Not that there is anything wrong with being gay, but the Mael brothers certainly are not. I've been a fan for more than 30 years.
Sadly the Maels dumb the British backing trio of Diamon, Fisher and Hampton (bass) as soon as they got big. They were never as good or even close. DUMB move. Ian Hampton did all the muical arrangements. The last Adrian Fisher was an incredible guitarists.
Franzko787, you're talking a load of crap. Your comments are "dumb", The Mael brothers have always done all the musical arrangements: they are SPARKS.
LOL- Fretslayer, ever since i saw this in the 70's i knew Hitler was still alive but he looks good for his years. as for the sound, well listen to other stuff from the period and you will see where a lot of metal bands took their queues from :-)
I remember when Queen was still a 'new band' and were just breaking into the U.S music market - DJs thought they were black because of the amount of groove the had. Funny stuff.
Sparks and Queen played the Marquee end 1972 and saw each others acts. There was certainly an influence (there is a vid of Sparks on Youtube from this time). At the time, Ron Mael reckoned Queen were going nowhere and asked Brian May to join Sparks (how wrong he was...)
I have just found this after searching for " can't believe that you would fall for all the crap in this song" that they performed on Jonathan Ross. The singer seems to have aged well and was very good looking as he was here. I remember my dad used to play this and enjoyed it as a kid. But i do prefer the aforementioned song.
Time to educate someone on Ron Mael! Ron's mustache was inspired by Charlie Chaplin, and some of Ron's mannerisms onstage remind me of the silent film star. The "toothbrush mustache" had nothing to do with Hitler at all. Sadly, because too many people kept making the same association, Ron changed the style of his 'stache by the late 80s.
Oh my god, this has just brought back so many memories. My Dad sadly passed in 2005, but he had a tache' and slightly gaunt cheeks like Ron and we always used to say it was him haha. Used to drive him crazy. Oh god, getting a little bit emotional but enjoying this video a lot. And actually, it's a pretty good song...
that eye movement(apparently accidental)made this band so memorable for those of us of a certain age - ( the keyboard player who looks like hitler) fame
They're the business. I'm going to see them live (again!) on Saturday night. Yes, we Brits always appreciated them even if Ron and Russell's fellow Americans didn't (and still don't). There's simply no-one like them.
I first got introduce to these guys through an album of theirs tittled Angst in My Pants ( their most recent at the time ) and then I went back and heard their older stuff like this, or as much of it as I could anyway, alot of their earlier albums were out of print. So these guys were more popular in England though? Well they've always been a very well-kept secret over here, let me tell you.
Only understood the structure of the lyrics a couple of weeks ago.The song is about a guy who is shy of talking to girls. The first two lines of each verse are him telling himself to be calm. The 'heartbeat, increasing heartbeat' lines in the second part are him describing his nervous system going into spasms.Utter genius
Shoppingmall4life, I'm pretty old! god, I used to love Sparks and have got Kimono My House somewhere in my house. Haven't listened for years, plus of course, it's on vinyl and I don't have a record deck. One song I used to love on it was "Equator" which was mad, but brilliant.

They've recently released their 21st studio album, the brilliant "Exotic Creatures of the Deep" which they showcased last year by playing all 21 albums consequetively during a London residency. On March 23rd they release a new single, "Lighten up, Morrissey" / I Can't Believe That You Would Fall For all the Crap in This Song", which they will perform on Jonathan Ross. They will also be playing two gigs at London's Forum on 20th and 21st March . So not much really!!!
Thanks for passing that info along - a new single called Lighten Up Morrisey - just the title itself, and knowing it's Sparks, makes me laugh.
They were such a breath of fresh air in the seventies. My take on the period between, oh maybe 1973 to 1977, was that all the best bands were on the periphery - Sparks made it on the Don Kirshner show (that's how I heard em the first time), but very little airplay in west central ohio.
