the beautiful, ultra clean sound of electronic late fifties and early sixties was smooth ride out of your day to a far place of openness and clear sky!
I am sure that tis aint apache, now i do not remember which tune this was, but even this song is named incorrectly, this is also GREAT one from The Shadows.
If you can play a melody from start to finish without a mistake and with a better feel and tonal quality, song after song after song, live ...... then criticise .... else STFU and admire.... there is / was nobody like Hank Marvin..... kept it simple, sweet, straight and smooth. Now thats some awesome technique ppl should work on.
Imagine that they've played these songs like a million times but they're still enjoying the show. That's something remarkable as well as their 5-decades-spanned career alltogether, don't ya think?
Well said Thorgal20. The electric guitar has many voices and in the hands of a great artist, it sings. Hank is one of many great guitarists who do amazing things in their own separate ways. Jimmy, Eric, Mark, Pete, Eddie Slash Django etc etc. He was the first great English guitarist and his roots were Rock and Roll. I love all music from this to blues, hard rock, jazz and classical. It's all a joy when done well :)
When you see a band with almost all it's members growing white hair, and still managing to draw thousands of people to a concert, you know what music is.
When I was a kid I hated this band, coz my father was listening them almost every day :) And I was listening only heavy metal and hard rock, and I was pissing on other stuff. But after all these years I finally understood their music, and I found that their music is really interesting and cool. You got to feel this stuff, when you're young you're stupid. Now I'm listening from blues to black metal and there is a space for oldies like The Shadows!
@Thorgal20 You dont have to be stupid because you are young. Is just about the music education that you recieve.
Since I was young (and I think that I´m young now) I listen all kind of metal, from death, to the softest style, and jazz, and classic, and blues, pop, rock, instrumental... Any kind of music that make me feel something good and have feelings when sound.
@Agnostic72 Yeah but There Was a Time when I didn't like the Shadows, but it was very long time ago when I was a kid. Now I'm listening The Shadows too. Ignorance comes from stupidy- that's what Quorthon from Bathory said once.
Yep. Right there with you. Back in my Jr. High days I also dissed everything that wasn't Metal, or Hard Rock at the very least, and now as a grown man I realize that I missed a lot of good music. So, I know what you're talking about...

I was just 10 years old when this track hit the UK charts at number one. I wanted to pick up a guitar and play like Hank Marvin. Im 61 years old now and eventually at the age of 57 I went into a guitar shop and bought myself a Fender (never having played a guitar before) and bought all the books I could on Hanks style. Now I cant shake of the style and I don't want to either.Search YouTube for "Stand By Me by Edward Taber"

Just great.......I live in Perth Australia and Hank lives in the foothills a few Kilometres away, he is a Jehovah Witness so I wait patiently for him to knock on my door....Then I'll bring out the Strat sit down act like I'm and reading his pamphlets while he plays for me:-)
Lovely clean tone sound (as always) - think they are still touring despite the "Final Tour" label on DVD. I'm sure they played in Adelaide quite recently.
que grupazo los shadows!! y apache esta guapisima!! con este grupo empeze yo a tocar, y precisamente con apache... estoy pensando en comprarme una fender strato roja jeje!!
The first concert I ever went to was Cliff Richard and The Shadows at Croydon ABC in 1963. The Shadows blew me away. They were great then and they are great now.
Apache was the first ever vinyl 45rpm single I bought. The definitive sound of the sixties for non vocals. The Shadows - simply the best. Foot note:Cliff Richard fired Bruce Welsh after he relaunched Cliff's career - that's a really Christian thing to have done.
Sorry Guitarman1146 yes Nokie is a great player but not a patch on Hank! Of course it's my opinion and yours is yours....I'm sure Hank appreciates and rates Nokie and vice versa but The Shads were the masters and made the Strat the best guitar for instrumentals. Yes again just my opinion.....The Shads have a proper show and the dance steps are hard to do when you're trying to play like Hank! Both are great acts but The Shads takes the biscuit!! :-)
I saw the ungrateful comment - Let's not compare the sound and impact the Shadows have had on popular music. The Ventures are great.... Shadows superb... don't use ten notes when one is just right... and of course.. THAT sound!
IMHO, Hank is an amateur next to Nokie Edwards of the Ventures. So many little extra lines in between the main melody parts that really dress up the song(s) is what Nokie can do that Hank doesn't. Hank leaves holes all over the place that make everything he plays sound empty an dull. Their arrangements and boring performance leave a lot to be desired. Guitar Master is Nokie Edwards, not Hank.
The Shadows is and will be one of the best instrumental bands in the world, their classic sound is as distinctive as each of its members, this video is a magnificent example of musical expressiveness, and despite years remain with a solid base. Excellent video, and my greatest respect for his music. Formidable. Thanks eaglerocktv.

Great tone & arrangement ... you can do all the comparisons you want to the Ventures but the original artist who recorded this song; Jorgen Ingman still rules (RIP) many of the slides Ingman used were replaced by open notes here ... also missing were the faux arrow sounds
So nice!

Great tone & arrangement ... you can do all the comparisons you want to the Ventures but the original artist who recorded this song; Jorgen Ingman still rules (RIP) many of the slides Ingman used were replaced by open notes here ... also missing were the faux arrow sounds
