John Brown, to me, is a hero. His raid on Harpers Ferry was more noble and heroic than the Alamo. Granted, the raid was suicidal and insane, but he had a truly good cause worth fighting for.

But I think we are better off as compared to being beaten and starved on a daily basis, and torn away from family with no recourse. His sacrifice then, is vital to what little gain we can claim now. John Brown was simply a deranged failure in life who decided to "conquer" the South with his "army" of 18 men. After capturing the arsenal at Harpers Ferry,

he called upon blacks to leave their masters and join him. None did. The slaves apparently realized what many boneheaded white New Englanders did not - John Brown was nuts, with a capital "N". Because Brown helped

ignite the Civil War, which killed a million and left blacks no better off than before, Brown will surely rot in hell.

This is a great documentary. However, at the beginning where it depicts him making a speech on the gallows is inaccurate. He said nothing there. Those words were actually in a written note that he handed to his guard before he went to be hanged.

nice biography... I thought the point of NHD was to have a coherent thesis and to take a stand. It is ironic how you did a project on John Brown, one of the most principled men in history and how he passionately fought for what was right, while you stradled the fence.
